Hey Tally and gang,

I was wondering if we should avoid 2 on 3 games by allowing the short team to use a bot? Probably wouldn't help all that much, but 2 on 3 is pretty absurd. What do you think?

Trading players? Hey, now it really IS a sport!

Heh, Tally made a post about a replacement player, but he quickly deleted it. Guess it's still under negotiations. ;)

Maybe we can talk YooDooRight to come out of retirement and join us? Monday is not looking good. Thursday may really be my last game, guys. Man, just when we were getting to my favorite world, too.

A lame Bot is better than a no-show.

Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at 4:44:40 PM

One wonders. I've had my own bots steal from me, and it takes them 3 tries to get into an empty goal. A stupid bot just infuriates me more.

OM

I have to agree with JB. A bot can sometimes be an asset, but many times it's infuriating as they will (of course) run headlong toward the goal and end up slamming into the nearest opposing team member to hand them the Scrum, or rush to get the Scrum on the edge of the map only to go flying off into the fog with it (stupid bots) And yeah, they will often miss the goal by several feet and circle around it 3 times before they ever score.

If there were some way to create an even better "Expert" bot than what the game allows, then I'd be for it.

Of course, you teams that are down a player or 2 can choose to do whatever you want. Personally, I wouldn't add a bot in on my team.

Just my 2˘

Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at 7:27:17 PM

Ri (Bot) Pog (Bot) and Mal (Bot) are the coolest bots. Hum (Bot) is notorious for circling the goal a few times. But then, he's sniffing around and making sure. I'd take one of the former over having noone to help. Ri can score 1-2-3 goals, mostly freebies, plus they SHOOT the enemy. Maybe for shooting I would use Greg (Bot). I shudder in fear at the thought.

Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at 1:23:00 AM

Eh, just use Predator (Bot). :P

Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at 2:44:15 PM

Seeing as Thursday will be my last game, I would like to sell my single MVP point. Slightly used, in good condition. As a bonus, it still has some Steel Corset blood on the edge. Make me an offer.

Heh, let's see if any bots get an MVP point or two!

OK, I'll admit I've also seen Ri score nicely in some games. Maybe a bot isn't the worst idea. But some of what I mentioned is true.

My fear is that in these league games, there always seems to be good D around the goal. If a bot gets the scrum they just head right toward the goal, rather than being patient and waiting for it to be cleared, because well THEY'RE BOTS! They don't know any better. Doing that is a nice way to give up a goal to the opposing team.

It would be cool if there were a way to program the bot to act as defense, i.e. Shoot up players on the other team, but stay away from trying to score. That could work nicely.

Anyway, I don't know why I care. I don't need extra players for my team, so I just should shut my trap!

@OM Your still bringing up a sore spot.

Here is how it goes with 3 on 2. On the 3 team, 2 players kill the other two. The third goes and gets the Scum ball and score. I think I've only seen one team do this and it was done to us. I will forfiet and not play another game of 3 on 2.

In games I've played (any team scum). Teams would only kill players with the ball, to be as sporting & fair as possible when a team is short. It is not a rule, but is good to follow, good sportsmanship. You are going to win, relax...

Thier is a difference between winning and rubbing a teams nose in it. Try not to cross the line.

@PREY-

Did you fully read my post, because I'm not sure what you're getting at?

I wasn't trying to say that I want teams to play our team shorthanded. Quite the contrary! I felt terrible about having to play Shell Shockers with them being shorthanded in a recent game. It is NOT my idea of a fun game. My comments were meant to point out to teams wanting to add a Bot that it could work AGAINST them in some cases. My point about the Bot just running blindly to the goal, and ending up handing the Scrum to the other team illustrated that (or so I thought)

Personally I'd like all games to be as even and as fair as possible, and to me that means having a full team of HUMAN players on each side. But, if a team wants to add a Bot in as a supplement, please, be my guest. I just have a different opinion about it is all.

It has nothing to do with "rubbing a teams nose in it"

@OM I get you. I will not play a 3 on 2 game either way. It will be forfiet if my team is 3. I'll take dual loss. I won't accept a bot. Let's get our reserves working!

Even if is a floating reserve. Let's push what the majority of Captains and Tally proposed. Make it work. There should be no more compaints about a reserve playing and 3 on 2 games happening.

Personally, I don't think much of the 4-on-4 game either. It is a completely different dynamic than 3-on-3. If the entire league were 4-on-4 I would have no problems with it, but we're 3-on-3 based. That's what I have practiced for. 4-on-4 seemed to often turn into the goal-based quagmire, where it's pretty much pure luck who gets the score. There were several times I wound up sandwiched into the middle of 4 tanks, unable to move or do anything but sit there and shoot at whoever was right in front of me.

But, then again, I'm in a bad mood today. XD

Master TMO- I agree with you actually. Back in the beginning of this, I was all for a 4 on 4 game if possible. However, after some recent 4 on 4's, I realized they are quite different than a 3 on 3. They can in fact turn into goal quagmires.

Going forward, I am leaning toward 3 on 3 matches with any teams we play. I just feel it makes for a more exciting game based on strategy and skill than on pure luck.

@ "goal quagmires"

I think this is more a function of one team over-emphasizing defensive play. When a team adopts a "protect the goal" strategy, it results in most of the battle action taking place at the goal. Not that this takes less skill - in fact it puts even more emphasis on good teamwork - but I agree it can be less fun than a wide open full-speed chase type of game (especially when you lose).

Overall 4 on 4 feels optimal to me more times than does 3 on 3. Of course -- Sheep love to be in herds!!!

"over-emphasizing defensive play"= one team needs to learn how to shoot :)

I generally agree with X, 4 on 4 is what does it for me, but the gap between 3s and 4s has totally (like, totally) narrowed for me through the season.

Thursday, March 25, 2004 at 2:23:43 AM

OK here it goes.... The shell shockers are DESPARATE for another dedicated player... Tomorrow is JB's last game (if he makes it) and then every game after that will be short-handed. I know nobody wants to win unfairly so please help me recruit if u want to.... I would rather have 1 dedicated player that will get the feel of our team and our strategies instead of having a different guy each time. I cant be choosy...if the hammer doesnt strike this down, im gonna start recruiting right b4 each game and get a player to play even if they are unexperienced....unless I get a dedicated player....the reserve pool looks pretty shallow...anybody interested in playing drop me an email ASAP killemall98@yahoo.com. The only requirements are that u are not on any other psychoscrum team and are not a demo. I dont care if u dont even know what scrum is...if u can shoot tally down that is good enough :) I will not accept a bot on my team...we will not forfeit any game... I will play all 3 myself if need be. Frantic is fun and damit I mean to play it :) see u out there

Thanks everyone

@ PREY

I haven't heard from Tank0r (et. Al:) for a bit. He want's to play and making him a "floater" is a good idea. He's relatively new to scrum but has a good shooting eye. I'd like to see him play.

I need him myself tonight and sent him an email. I'm going to consider him a permanent part of Psycho to keep him around and mix him into games.

Must be nice to be wanted.

Dang! Thought we had it there. We lost game 1 to the Clonus by 1 point. Tough game. Then we leaped out to a 5 point lead in game 2. But Clonus fought hard and stopped us dead to win by 2, giving them a 3pt victory over both games.

Good games guys.

3/25/04 Glamdring vs. Steel Corset

Final score: 18 - 12 Corset

Game 1: 10 - 7 Corset

Game 2: 8- 5 Corset

Both good, hard fought games on our first Frantic of the season.

As usual, TG and Sizicus are a lethal combination, and Sluggy added to the chaos with some great scoring in game 1. Capt. MP sat out for Corsets. Dar could not play for Glamdring because of computer issues.

In game 2, Glamdring managed to get some action going and made it a tie game at one point. But then, Corset began to score more efficiently to end up 3 points ahead.

Good games overall, but we just couldn't stay in one piece long enough to score more, what with Siz shooting us up so well. And TG used her usual slinky maneuvers to sneak the scrum into the goal.

Oh well, we are slooowly sinking back down in the rankings. Eh, not too much more to the season at least.

The Horde Vs Rubes Totals: 18 to 12 The Horde, 3 on 3 contest

Don't really have a game one or two memory to talk about. The Horde are a superior team on Frantic Maps...

We learned a lot from watching the Horde score and how they did it. We will apply the same techniques in our next game.

We had our full 4 show up. Nice to see. Think WeenTank volunteered too quickly to sit out. Would like to have you play next game Ween.

Let's try a 4 x 4 with the Sheep...

Good game Horde. If someone doesn't knock the Sheep down a peg. It could be baaaad for any other teams chances.

Friday, March 26, 2004 at 1:54:56 AM

Looks like we got zIMP. A rough note for my last tourney game, but they are the Black Sheep, and they played solid as they always do. Felt a need to lobotomize Hubobrain with his slick steals. A bit of confusion with the in-game player-swap (suddenly it was 4on3, then one player disappeared). It wouldn't have changed the outcome, but I suggest avoiding that in the future. Anyhow, I think I'm looking forward to just playing casual non-tourney games when I return. There isn't nearly enough humorous banter during the tourney games. ;) Good luck to ya, Shell Shockers! Thanks for letting me have a run at this. I'll see ya all next month.

About 4-3. It was a swift player switch. 12 seconds thing. I was late. I came in, said hello and sat still. Reagent X said 'I'm leaving' twice. Then he left. Then I started to play. Incidentally I spawn far away from the goal, so I was no threat. In our team rotation it was Reagent X's turn to sit. Thus when I arrived he had to leave. Simple and no big deal.

@ X awesome picture. %)

@ Bolo: no one likes to lose. Try humour. It works. Re. Tally's baseball post 03/22

Damit JB is greyed out....sniffle sniffle....

@ sheep....i was under the impression that we were standing around waiting for hugo. Didnt realize that there was gonna be a swap in game....when u said game on I assumed we were good to go...apparently JB thought the same thing....sorry but it rubbed me the wrong way at the time....no way it affected the outcome....in the future I think that when everyone says GAME ON that everybody plays what they got. Nothing wrong with a latecomer dropping in to rescue a short-handed team but a switch is confusing...also confusing for stats......reag got two goals that are not included in the total score....watched the same confusion during the hord vs sheep game....nobody likes it.....
