Slightly bending the concept of a 3-on-3 in order to match the bizarre scheduling of a US team (including members in Pacific, Mountain, and Eastern time zones) and a UK team 6-8 hours "ahead" of them the matches have been played:

1st game was a 1-on-1: dar vs. Kris.... Dar wins 18 to 6.....(LC50 sat out since we outnumbered them 2 to 1)

2nd game was a 2-on-2: dar & LC50 vs. Kris and Marrick... Team 11 wins again, 11 to 9....... (Deathron sat out since they outnumbered us 3 to 2)

Total score:

Team 11: 29

Team 14: 15

Good, hard-fought games both!

LC50 , Ben and Dar on to the Final Four....

HELLO!

First thing I have to do is give a big THANKS to team 10; MP, Zimp, and Daim are #1 in sportsmanship. They have agreed to a rematch with us this Saturday because of lag issues we had Tuesday night.

A good many of you know I have been particularly sniveling about lag the last month or so. I almost quit Psychoscum because of it but my team convinced me to do other wise.

Tally, Sluggy, and Tankgirl have recently felt the agony lag can cause. They, like the rest of us can live with getting our butts kicked as long as we feel we get an even shot. TG is right about setting another time if lag is affecting you.

Lag can be caused by a number of different things. Something may not be set correctly or be faulty on your PC. It may be in your lan or it may be your ISP.

There are several sites I have found to help test your network, and define and track-down problems. Much of it is geared more toward Windows machines but Mac users can glean info too.

I use a Mac and found decent information here, All Things Mac

I downloaded the RMAC utility from the link they give in the OS X

Section. Seems to help some.

Then try the test at the url below. It might give you some insights. (BTW, I tried the test before using the utility and it didn't work. Afterward it did. Don't know why.)

TEST

Try the following url that PREY sent to me to see what problems it reports about your isp. I found it quite interesting. If you encounter any problems send in the trouble report. (I usually don't send those automatically generated bug reports but did this time when I encountered a problem. The programer actually emailed me back saying the bug had crept in and thanked me!)

TEST

It generated an excellent report and I felt armed when I called my cable ISP. They agree that it is their network problem and gave me the song and dance about letting the engineer in my area know. I'll give them a little time and get right back to nagging them if it isn't resolved soon. They did sound sincere about wanting to get it cleared up.

How much lag is too much? For scrumming in TT I'd say your pushing the envelope if you are at 150 ms ping. I get killed easy in BM if I go much past 130 ms.

So hunt down your lag and kill it! Don't give up. There is a reason for it and it can be fixed. These broadband ISP tout their products as suitable for online gaming, let's hold them to it.

Don't expect to get good ping time from home servers though. The fault is most likely the server.

Instead of clogging the thread with picts I included the following links to screen captures of my ping today, Wed 1-21-04. I tried to make them small as possible byte wise but still readable.

I took them at 7AM, 12PM, 5:40 PM, and 7PM. 7 to 11PM is my worst time :-(

I have been told by opponents that my ping couldn't be as bad as theirs. To them I say; Bite me.

Must...kill...lag.

7:00 AM; things aren't too bad.

7AM

7AM 2

12PM; still quite playable.

12PM

12PM 2

540PM; Can still kick Tanky butt :-)

5:40PM

5:40PM 2

7PM; Oh, no. At Tanky mercy :-(

Ah well.. The tournament favourites are out after a 19-18 win for Baba, Cowboy and Reagent X.

Great games, and we almost had it (being several points up in the second game) but ACA got cut off for a couple of minutes towards the end, and the lead slipped away.

Great performance by the other team.. I seemed to be permanently shut down or blocked by Cowboy and Baba, as ReagentX slipped passed with the scrum. Good luck in the next round guys.

Game One : : Game Two

Yeah I saw that after posting... Shocking :(

There are a few times of day that are particularly laggy for me.. 7pm PDT is one of the worst times for me (particularly on west coast servers) Other bad times are around 1am PDT.

More ideas for next league:

Perhaps we need to plus up each team with an extra player?

For instance: 3on3 Scrum would have 4 players per team. They could alternate who sites out a game between the 2 games if they wish. It just seems really common to have at least one person not make it, and then the whole game is pretty much thrown. This way, it is much more likely that each team will have at least 3 players per game.

I doubt that this would be too popular of an idea, since it would mean joining a team that you might not get to play every game in. Perhaps this will spark an even better idea amongst people. I'm just suggesting this since it seems even round 2 games are being problematic!

Just thinking aloud, here.

@Flea... Maybe we should get a cardboard Cut out of Tanky and set him by the goal? That way the other team could shoot it to pieces. The cardboard Tanky would never smoke, just like the real one.... Camping at the goal. Thus, leaving the lagging Flea and team un-molested? ;)

Well, after tonight's battle, I see no reason for a 5 on 5 scrum league. This was by far the best TT gaming experience yet - a combination of skill and strategy with open space and less lag. Hat's off to Ge0rge, Sherm, and Sniper for opening all our eyes as to what competition can be like. If you ain't good, you can't hide. They definitely stepped up to the plate.

Thanks - yet again - to -Z- for hosting!

1 vs. 9

We could've sent the game into OT with a last second score, but it got taken away in the last second. Tough, hard games; the best I've been in. We came back from a 1-5 deficiet to lead in the 2nd game. Congrats go to Team 1, but a big hats off to my teamates Ge0rge and Sniper! Very proud to be on their team!
