Tally I think team 16 forfeits. We finally got three people but there is too short a notice to meet team 1. I apologize to team 1 for having to deal with this. They would have probably won anyway. Good luck going to the finals team 1!!! Thanks to -z- and tally ho for organizing this event. I would be very interested to compete in a future event when I get a team squared away!!! Professor im sorry it didnt work out. I would be interested in joining forces with you on another league. Filbert u too. Good luck to all..

See ya on the scrum field....

Deathron how about thursday 7:30gmt?

Monday, January 19, 2004 at 4:52:58 AM

Team 10 advances to the next rung after defeating a shorthanded team 7 today.

Final scores were:

Team 10: 34

Team 7: 16

Racer never showed, despite a few attempts to contact/locate him. Game started half an hour late & game 1 was a bit of a blowout. VashStampede & 44 kicked it up a notch in game 2 & even took the lead at one point. Gave us a good fight, but alas it was too much being a tank down & team 10 regained the lead to secure the first round win.

Thanks to Vash for hosting a near lagless game.

Would you please go ahead and delete my thread regarding team 2 vs 15. We have moved on.

Will the creator of a thread eventually be able to delete it? Will we be given a "search" function? Will you marry me?

Team 4 moves on the cheap (and less desirable ) way.

Team 5 lets talk times!

Monday, January 19, 2004 at 11:10:00 AM

Tally twould be cool to have DQ like you first did XD

This way we would see who's in who's not. B)

Methink our team is DQ because we could never set a rematch. :(

You gotta love this, you're DQ cause the enemy team had only one time in the universe to play, and rematch was impossible thereafter. So you're out, never to have played. 8(

Hmm seems like you offered the most options for the game, they only offered the one. Therefore in my book, that makes you the favourites surely...

Agreed

Monday, January 19, 2004 at 12:07:53 PM

Why would we DQ a 3 and 4 seed? Guess we should only allow teams with players we actually see playing. If you match a high seed with a team of seldom players. They are very likely to not play the match. Think we can only match up teams with players we play with often. If we don't see them much, means the timings are wrong to play. Or they don't.. Play.

I would like to compete against the 3's and 4's. We'll actually the 3 is in my bracket. If the seedings are correct. These seeds are suppose to give the 1's and 2 seeds the most trouble in respective halves.

If you knock these teams out, there isn't much competition in a bracket. Theoretically speaking.

Monday, January 19, 2004 at 2:03:32 PM

Is it me, or did team 14 check in on sunday morning, then try and schedule their match for sunday night?

Monday, January 19, 2004 at 2:05:10 PM

Well here is the deal: the foe (team 14) only could play at this one time, friday at 11:30 PDT (7:30GDT) cause they were out of school. They all showed up and my 2 teammates as well (we're team #3). I missed this game time, cause in my mind the game was at 12:30. I am the culprit. I got messed up in time zone, between GDT (England time, the 3 foes' place), and my team buddies CDT and MDT. I'm PDT. 4 time zones here =) (my head is spinning). 8o

My teammates were waiting for me and declined to play, hoping for a rematch. So like a dork I show up, all prime, at 12:30, one hour late. So no game, and much expletives. Then after that, it was apparently impossible for our foe to have another time before the deadline, because their moms wouldn't let them play on weekend or something. Like, weekend usually means more freedom. Or not for them. :[

Like you know, ween, supra and me play just about every day. P

A deadline extension would be nice. It would allow us to play the foe again. Maybe. I don't know their availability. Seems whoever will fight them will need a miracle.

So let the Hammer speak: an extension or DQ doom? %)

@ tally

Why dont u make the font smaller so we can read it??

Whats this coming back SH**?? Once ur DQ'd ur out right???

Monday, January 19, 2004 at 2:58:00 PM

It's a bit of a toss up. If they missed a mid-week time, there should be an effort on the part of the other team, in good faith, to get the game in. I didn't see it there, but there's no mandate or anything.

Thus, they get the benefit of my resistance to tainted subjectivity. In order to get past round 2, however, you should have to defeat somebody .

I do think that it is a reasonable compromise.

Suggestion for future tournaments: There should be some type of qualifying event(s) to separate flakes and non-talent from the pool.

Allowing practically anybody to sign-up sets the stage, IMHO, for what we've seen in the first round...lots of DQs, no-shows and 2 on 3 competitions.

Vashstampede and I were both looking forward to putting up a good fight and being a strong team in this tournament. We got no-showed by our "teammate" Racer445, subsequently beat by Team 7, and then...if you can believe this...received no apology from Racer and were told "Oh well, it's just a game."

What did Vash and I learn the hard way? Make sure you get yourself on a team full of responsible, serious players.

What did our first round competition, Team 7, learn? That they can beat a team of two players. Not fair to them -- they came in wanting real competition.

Again, if we want a serious competition...I recommend scheduling deadlines for the games (as you've done) and make people prove they are talented (by reputation or play-in games) and most of all, make people prove that they are responsible.

Agree? Suggestions for a responsibility test?

Some hard learned lessons going on.

We have to take responsibility when we choose teammates. You think PREY and MJ want to get stuck with me? They just know I show most of the time and am used to riding on backs of fur coats. I got the best teammates!

Don't choose the first shooter that comes along. It's OK to say no thanks to someone. Just be tactful.

Get your times ironed out. Where do you live and what time is it is not a dumb question to ask. You got five players show up, you got game.

Calls for exclusivity by unknown commodities can often result in unexpected consequences.

As it stands now,

KA,

Tomago,

RamRod,

Leopard,

Ishbuu,

Zach

Are all personas non grata for the next go-round, unless im mistaken and someone defends their participation.

Now I see Hugo's , Ween's and Supra's frustration Team 14 has an unreasonably small window of availablity and it is a window that is pretty hard to squeeze through.

Trans global scheduling is a *****.

Who's gonna get the hammer this time?

Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at 1:42:42 AM

Bolo I agree with you, technically we're DQ because my 2 compadres should have played 2 vs 3. That's the law, others did it and got beaten. However it is frustrating when your opponent has only ONE time in 7-8 days to fight you. In all due fun, the goal is not just to move ahead and to 'win', but to play the game fairly and to do your utmost to accomodate everyone. 3x3 scrum means 3x3, not 3x2 or 3x0.

4/9 teams got DQ for no-show. To quote someone famous: This is rigged.

Tally the 'DQ sorta' is cracking me up :P

Anyway, in the meantime I'm eating rubber chickens. 8(

PS: Yo Tally 'Hammer' Ho B) & co., in the future, provisions should be done for deadline extension. Deadlines are there for the tourney to move on, but when almost half the teams move forward without a good fight, it is dubious.

HB, we all agree that moving on by DQ sucks. Initially, the plan was 3 or 4 day rounds, but it was deemed too short, and people wanted weekends to get their rounds in.

They got their weekends. You situation is an anomoly, a word I can't spell, and I regret having to DQ you, which is why you're still sorta hanging in the shadows. I don't thin anybody wants this thing to go on forever.

This point has no post. I'm going for coffee :)

Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at 2:37:28 AM

To me the bottom line is, if we are going to have a real competition, lets do it for real. Lets draw some hard lines, lets standardize the field, and let the best team win with a clear conscience.

After reading this thread, the following thoughts come to mind:

These are not full recipes, just throwing together some ingredients to see what cooks.....

-----It seems to me that the global schedule is a deal breaker. If the vast majority of us are in the US, the games should be on a US schedule...maybe we should even specify "US 3 on 3". International schedules add a horrible amount of complexity.

----Conversationally, times should be CST. Each person is then responsible for interpolating their local times.

----Only players with broadband should be allowed to participate. We all know what it is like to play in the area of a tank that is driven by a dialup modem.

-----Everyone should be required to have an email account registered in PTT. These are free and easy through Yahoo. This way the individual team schedules can be worked out offline but with a greater degree of communication.

-----There should be a start time window that is rigidly adhered to. Once the start time is agreed upon, there are six people that have set their schedules to it. Last second changes should not be allowed and a team should not have to sit around waiting forever. Maybe there should be a 1/2 hour window at which time the teams play with whoever is available, or the offending team is DQ.

----There should not be an alternate time or a second chance schedule. If a team misses its agreed upon game time, game over. The reason being, what if they reschedule a game because team A missed the original, then team B misses the makeup game....then what? Is team B disqualified?

----Tourneys should be best 2 out of 3. This will somewhat nullify the effect of one player or one team having a lucky run and walking away with the game.

----There should be a warmup period in the server prior to the game. The server should be running properly during the warmup and the server owner should be present.

----If there are objectionable issues with the server such as lag, a protest needs to be voiced prior to the start of the actual game. If players are having serious problems with lag, the game should be cancelled or an alternate server setup. I have been on the downside of a lag problem and can say first hand that it is a horrible way to lose.

Ok, that's it for now. I was addressing some of the various complaints and questions that I saw in this thread. Obviously, any one of my points might have a critical flaw that I did not see.

@TG: I agree that all participants should "register" for a tournament by providing a public e-mail address.

In our case we were unable to contact anyone on Team 13.

TG makes good points which will be folded into the mix when we start up the third iteration of the tourny.

Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at 4:45:07 AM

I'll vouch for Ishbuu as a good player. He showed up solo to the first set time. On the 2nd attempt, he was too sick and sent his sister NESS in his place, who turned out to be a very strong player. He's a good guy.

As for the problem of teams moving forward by default. Here is one solution:

Nobody moves to stage 2 without a fight. The first stage needs to be 2 weeks. If 2 teams conduct a battle within the 1st week, the winning team advances to stage 2 and the losing team is out of the game. If a team fails to appear in force or make contact within the first week, that team is considered dissolved. The remaining team will then be assigned to fight one of the following for the 2nd week:

1. Any other team that got stood up during the 1st week

2. Any team created from the dissolved members. If they can find each other and make a team within the week (WITHOUT Tally's help), then they are probably motivated and a good bet. For example, baklava and NESS just needed 1 more reliable member to make it work.

By the end of the 2nd week, every team should have conducted a battle (since the 2nd week teams are only composed of those that make an effort to make contact). Only the teams that conducted a battle and won shall move forward. Anyone who could not get their act together enough to maintain their team and find a fight are out. Should be smooth sailing from there.

That way, Tally does not catch heat for bringing in the hammer.

If need be, I'll volunteer to help organize this the next time round. This is how we use to do our Halo Lan Parties.

Possible rule: no more than 33.3 percent of one team should be comprised of euros.

Rule amendum, if that's a word, and if it's used in proper context: I'm not sure how z feels about being part of the measurement. There's that whole island/continent thing.

Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at 10:47:10 AM
-z-

Heh I'm all with that.

I'm different from most of the brits in the way that I tend to live on PST as opposed to GMT.

As MOST of the players are PST/Central/EST I think that any euro players wishing to compete should bear that in mind when signing up. If school hours and PST availability is limited, then they have to be the ones to accommodate the majority. NOT the other way round.

I don't think the 33% bit makes much sense though.. That might mean a LOT of teams being down a player, as opposed to just a couple of DQs.

-Z-

I second MacRotor suggestion. The first round is where you weed out the no-showers.

Survivors to round 2 and after, usually move faster.

As a side note.. If Merrick, Kris and Deathtron cant find a suitable time to play LC50 Ben and Dar, then I think Hugo's team should play instead and Team 14 DQ'd.
