Forums Index >> General >> Censorship My Ass - Vote for an over 18's sec...

Page : 1 : <2>

I understand that there are people under 18 in this forums, but there are also people over 18 too. We always have to be politically correct, and careful as to what threads/responses are posted.

I think we should have an over 18's part of the forums, whereby entrants would have to would have to read a disclaimer, and accept its conditions prior to entry.

Useless spamming would not be tolerated, as well as senseless swearing eg someone just typing fu** fu** fu** etc. There would still be rules, however we would be able to talk about mature adult themes without offending a minor.

The world is becoming too politically correct.

GQ, I simply think you were reading too much into this. NO OFFENSE meant.

I'm the father of two children. I left my job and career so my wife could keep hers. I watch an 11 month old child five days a week and a 3 year old 2 days a week. I make dinner every night, she doesn't cook, and clean during the day. I then work most evenings as a Real Estate Broker and every weekend until around 10pm or so. I have to do this since our entire family lives two states away and I don't want to be overly indebted to daycare or force my kids to be away at any greath length.

Telling me to take a look at myself as a man, and others here too, was ludicrous. Sometimes a joke is just that, a simple joke.

I guarantee the folks that harass you are, and to no surprise, kids.

Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to be on my toes.

Invite a retard to a picnic and you'd better expect to get drool in the potato salad.

I agree Rogue, I am sorry and should not have said that. I just didn't think before I spoke and probably need to take a look in the mirror myself. I hope you can understand how sorry I am to saying that and will forgive me.

IS replacing "f******" with "freaking" really considered censorship? You still get the point. And as someone said earlier, resorting to profanity diminishes a person.

I'm just curious. What "adult" topics do we need to discuss?

That's a good idea, the 18 and up thing. I don't want my kids using sites where the language is to strong, but it don't like censorship either.

Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at 11:14:46 AM

I think Banshee summed it up best when he stated that perhaps "Adult" isn't the right word. No one is talking profanity or pornography here. I look at it as more as streamlining the site. In fact, I would even suggest a political or humour page as well.

Personally, I go through periods where I visit this site several times a day to not once in months. Sometimes I get inspired or laugh at a particular type of humour and want to chime in, but most of the time I find it dull and repetitive and I'm wadding through the same ol', same ol'.

Most of the kids here are taking this thread as a personal assault - like we're abandoning them and they're not worthy of our "crap". Well, I find most of the kiddie posts to be redundant and crap. Where are my rights as an adult TT player? If I want to post something that is "adult-themed" and I know will be enjoyed by the other adults, yet also know that it might come across or misconstrued as offensive, where do I post it without fear of it being edited or deleted. Remember that picture I took of myself in a bra with my cat on my lap? GQShooter found that offensive. My wife and I found it funny. That thread got locked. Different worlds, different humour.

I really don't see what the big deal is here. You can make PTT accessible and enjoyable to ALL or you can keep it up solely as one big, kid-infested site and watch the more liberal-minded adults continue to fade away. I've been here long enough and spoken to some who have stopped visiting this site to know the reasons they've lost interest.

I believe PTT is an integral part to any future success the ever elusive TT2 might have. It would be a shame if even more TTers stopped posting simply because the site didn't accommodate their specific needs. No site updates, no game updates, redundant posts....You tell me what that means?

GQ, you know most of us here that post that kind of skewed humor are typically in our 30 or 40's. Somtimes it's suggestive but it usually doesn't go beyond what kids will see in every day television.

I have seem some pretty interesting things on shows during the daytime. Has anyone heard of MTV? It's this new station that plays music on your TV. IT'S SO COOOOOL!

That Martha Quinn is so hot!

No, really. Didn't Madonna, Britney, and Christina all smootch on an award show?
Football and Janet Jackson's breast. I wasn't expecting that one.
Has anyone seen dateline lately? I have to freeze the TV when my kids are near. There's always someone being killed. If there has been nudity it has always been very very mild. AND intended to be humorous, not perverted.

As I have said in the past, this is where I come to play and joke around for the most part.

GQ, I look at it in pretty basic terms. People (and I'm referring to the immature kids) know your a woman and feel they can say whatever they want because you'll never see them in real life.

I still don't understand why people play in the shockwave servers, even more so if you're being harrassed.

Oh and bt the way,

I vote "No ". Why?

Here's the way I see it. If we make an adult section, what'll be likely discussed there? Probably vulgar issues or topics like sex/pornography, offensive jokes (sexist, racist, "extreme political", etc), and/or political topics which could very well escalate into large more serious and damaging flame wars than what might have been accomplished here in the General Section. How mature are we to be talking about sex all the time or cursing off people and claiming it was a joke? (like that example thread above, do the administrative team want to encourage sexism?)
If we made an adult section for 18+ members (btw, how exactly are we going to determine if people are 18 and not just 9 year olds who wanna see and talk about dirty things?) it would show this site as supporting topics that many new TT members' parents (cos face it, children *do* come to this site) may not support being vocalized publicly regardless of what safety features are used to weed out fake "adults". That will hurt site traffic and most assuredly will force (some) people to leave who otherwise would gladly have stayed.

If we look at the "need" for an adult section in a different way, there are some people who might want it just so they can use curses in posts of topics they would have liked to curse in but were stopped because the admins and mods don't (or didn't) support bad language. So they would go to this "new" 18+ section finally having the ability to curse on a public forum, but now be stuck having to reestablish a similar thread just so they post their views but with a couple added curses in them. Oh, believe me when I say I've seen that happen on another forums... It was pathetic, but people actually did that and continued doing it for some time...all the while, the original threads got the attention and continued on normally but the now uncensored copies of the threads were left to rot or turn into bitter threats being thrown back and forth between sides.

In short...(the moment you've all been waiting for) I don't think a computer game website meant for a crowd of all ages should have an Adult Section. It would indirectly show that the TT community supports as a whole (regardless of what individuals say or do) very touchy subjects (political topics), porn (meaning pornopgrahic content and/or perversion), and possibly vulgarities (sexism, racism, etc in regards of those "jokes" people feel they are so very much entitled too)... Which contradicts the "suitable for all ages" premise of ThinkTanks and what server hosts and admins/mods around here have been trying to dissuade for a very long time.
(I kinda figure I'll get someone saying "you're stupid, I don't agree with your opinion, so shut up" to my views any moment now...)

^^^Well , yeah.
(Smart kid, you are).

Touchy subject here. Earlier I said this isn't a bad idea, whether or not it is needed is a different matter altogether. My oldest used to visit this sight for a short time back in late '04, early '05 I've been popping in and out since the gg days and never really saw or read anything of concern, at least not that wasn't addressed quickly. I would have an issue with her posting pictures or sharing personal information. Walking into a room full of masked strangers and opening up to that point is asking for trouble. I don't know how much work would be involved or if there would be enough benefit to justify it, but the overall concept is not a bad one. I don't know if the game is on it's last leg or not, but I do wish I had been involved here more and not over-reacted to dumb stuff in the past just in case. I do agree that the 18+ section aint gonna happen anyway.

Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at 6:24:16 PM

Yes, I agree we should replace DEEJ and jamesbomb with new moderators. Nothing against them, I like them but if you guys dont want to keep having to come on and check vote for new ones.

This would be fine... Why not let adults have their fun?

But... Then why would this be including you Serial Killer?

Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at 8:41:57 PM

@ All,

I can't believe that after 80 + posts in this thread an adults section to this website hasn't been erected. For the non-believers, ask your children if they are seen or heard one of the following:-

The Simpsons
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
South Park
Eminem

I bet you $1,000,000 that you can stop your children from watching these. How old where you when you bought your first alcoholic drink? Statistics show that most people have bought alcohol before the legal age, or at the very least tasted it. When was the first time you saw pornography? I am 150% it was also at a young and tender age.

All of these things are available to children, where you accept it or not. An adults section to the this site would have disclaimers advising of the potential material that could be included herein. It does not mean that its going to be there.

I can't believe that some of you are happy to protest at something that makes so much sense.

Why can't we have a section of the forums we can let of sleeves hang a little lower? Just because it's there doesn't mean that you have to read it. When I don't want to listen to something on TV I change channels. Same principles apply here.

@ CannedSplam,

Believe it or not but I am over 18, in fact I am over 21, actually just thinking about it I have just realised that I am also over 30. :)

Because more and more ppl are being exposed to more and more vulgar words, acts, ppl, ect. I do not boast when I say most ppl at my old school new all the curse words, shows with swear words, sex cites, and every vulgar thing possible by 7th grade. I understand that u want less constriction but where do we draw the line if this section for adults continues and is actually made?

Thursday, March 30, 2006 at 1:21:34 AM

Ah the words o me own mudda
"There are more intelligent ways to express yourself."

In the words of I dunno some stupid commercial announcer
"Whether you like it or not people judge you by the words you use."

Thursday, March 30, 2006 at 3:11:23 AM

^^ I don't think the issue is about the

Swear words, sex cites, and every vulgar thing

Being proliferated on this site.

I think the problem is the overzealous moderating, meaning anything even slightly derogatory (or sarcastic) gets deleted forthwith and never graces this site again...

I find this happens more often in the political discussions and threads that would appeal more to adults. You can't wrap the kids on this site in cotton-wool... None of the adults among us are going to make a point of swearing openly and posting vulgar content, I just think the moderation needs to ease up a little.

-z-

This issue has been discussed before and rejected. This is a forum for ThinkTanks (and of course plenty of off topic discussions).

Creating an 'adult' only section solves no problems and really only adds problems. Would the under 18's really stay away? Is the 'censorship' and editting purely for their benefit? No to both. How does one verify that someone is >18 (apart from Credit card checks - but then again not every >18 has a credit card. I for instance don't) Creating an adult section also shifts the whole purpose of this being a game related forum/site to something entirely different. You would have totally innapropriate indexing on sites like google - given enough 'adult material' the whole site may even get flagged or blacklisted by sensitive ISPs or even countries (eg China who is very hot on sensoring adult content on the internet)

Swearing and profanity is unnecessary 99% of the time, and only really exists because the swearer is incapable or not intelligent enough to express him/herself any other way and overuse purely diminishes the impact of the word. There is no easy way to auto-replace swear words in the context they are written, and even when there are such filters, they too cause more problems than they are worth as the kids try to see which words they can and can't get away with - or how to be clever and use '1337-speak' or ascii characters to avoid the filters.

If you really want to discuss things so non-TT related and with an adult theme, there are millions of other places to do this.

A question I might pose to you though: Which is more correct? Censoring adult posts for content or censoring children from seeing them? Either way, someone is losing their rights.

And just what exactly would an 'adult' section imply? 'Oh I'm free to post porn and swear like a drunken redneck? I can't imagine that being any good for the community or the game.

-z- has spoken and there will be no "adult" section. Most of the other moderators and admins has expressed oposition as well.

There's really no point in discussing it further.
