LGM

I love TT. It's the most fun game I've played. I also love this community. You folks are the most varied group I belong to. We've got people from many walks of life, and many places. We share a fun pastime, and also kick around ideas on all kinds of subjects.

This community is something I don't want to see fade away. We have people who repeatedly contribute in many ways. I wish I knew how to do more modding/scripting things, but don't have time enough to learn. I'd love to offer some cool mods, but that's not in my power. However, I want to make an offer to the community of PTT.

Many of you know that I'm an educator by profession. In my practice, I use some tools that enable groups of people to get along with each other, so here's my offer.

I am wondering if this community would like to develop a code of conduct. This would be done with the input of everyone who takes the time to give input. It will take a little time, but here's my proposal.

• I collect input from people in PTT about what kind of behavior will be acceptable. This could range from how to play the gametypes, to how to act in the forums, and how to treat other people here. I'd hope some mention of how to handle disagreements would be in there, too.

• I tabulate the information, and post a thread with the results. Then, I figure out a way to have you use that list and set priorities. What does the community see as important? What are the expectations we set for each other here?

•Next, I take the prioritized list, and draft a code of conduct. This is posted here, and you give it a score. I will explain that process if we do it, but basically you decide how much you can support the code. If the community largely supports it, we can implement it. If there isn't enough support, then fine. We will continue without one.

NOTE- This is not intended to interfere or take away from the work of the moderators in any way.

I'm thinking of doing this by email or by putting up a thread for it. If you know good ways to get input from people more easily than e-mail, feel free to pitch in.

This is my offer to the community. If you want to do this, post here and say so. If you don't want to do this, say so. If the feedback I get in this thread is not in support of the idea, that's OK, but I'd like to know. If you prefer to give me your response by e-mail, go ahead. mailto:ttankslgm@gmail.com

If we decide to proceed, there will be a new thread for that. Please don't post your input here. Just let me know if you want to go ahead or not.

This is a great idea! Check out AO's thread for examples of unacceptable behavior.
And here are a few of my ideas about what is unacceptable:

1) Flaming, on PTT or in the game
2) Excessive swearing
3) All these threads that are just meant to bash another player.
4) Not being encouraging to a newer player (like flaming DEMOs just for being DEMOs)
5) Abusing admin powers
6) Excessive spamming
7) Letting vets get away with certain things, while banning new players for doing those same things

@ player : what ya mean whit -- 5) Abusing admin powers -- ? 8o

@LGM
Great idea! I've asked for such a code of conduct for the past two years on here and even had a post on the GG forums called TT Code of Conduct for all players .
It was mostly about conduct on the field and in chat during games, but we need it for this board too. Here is a link on PTT that I posted during my first month as a player called TRUE COLORS . Here is one on scrum tactics that are acceptable.

Here is an excellent code of conduct for a sports team message board. We should use this as a template for our new PTT Code of Conduct.

All the ideas are welcome, and thanks for the support.

My intention for this thread is just to find out if we think it's needed. I do (obviously).

So do PLAYER36 and paisano... Thanks for letting it be known.

While I appreciate the input, my plan is to get input after finding out if the community supports the idea. Steer folks here so they can say I like the idea or that's not something we need. Get the word out, and see if there is support. If so, all the input will get collected in the near future.

Please let me know if you want to develop a code or not, but save the input about specifics for later.

If we decide to proceed, there will be a new thread for that. Please don't post your input here. Just let me know if you want to go ahead or not.

I'm hoping to hear from a bunch of you on this, so tell us if you want a code or not.

Yes!

Pray to GOD for him to reveal himself to you.

LGM, great idea, I'm with you

LGM, I hope you read my disturbing but true events that do happen in our little TT community. It should give you a good idea of what truly goes on in this environment.

@ AO- I did read it, and I also have seen some events lately that are disturbing. You and I seem to be thinking in parallel directions here.

I want to go ahead with my idea as a way to prevent future problems. Are you with me?

LGM

Well, I can interpret the response in two ways. Four people have expressed support for my idea, so I know there are 5 of us interested. I did get one e-mail response that thought it was a good idea, too. That's 6 in favor, none opposed.

However, the lack of response may speak louder. I'm not willing to go ahead with so little feedback.

Here's what I'll do. I'll leave this up until March 15. If the responses continue to be this light, then forget it. If people post support, then I'll start up the process.

If you want this, speak up. Otherwise, it won't happen. (Hey moderators, what's your opinion?)

Thursday, March 09, 2006 at 11:59:26 AM

LGM, the lack of response is no reason to not go ahead, it's just that some people don't really care, I have a nine year old son who stays with me at the weekend (I'm divorced from my first wife), he loves TT when he comes over, I want to buy him TT for his birthday in a month, but if his mother saw some of the language on here she would flip, something needs to be done for the sake of TT and PTT

There is a child safety filter. But I don't think tat is enough

Thursday, March 09, 2006 at 2:41:33 PM

I think it's a good idea. Would be nice to have something to point to when the hammer comes down.

A lot of people wonder why their posts were edited/deleted and ask where does it say that? Lone made a thread, but you have to hunt it down or bump it.
http://supra.planetthinktanks2.com/archives/comm-thread.asp?thread=7367&forum=4

A page of it's own like About this Site would be nice.

And here's a sugestion thread with some ideas about a code of conduct.

I hope you become an admin, LGM.

It's time to find the right key to the lock.

A hint or two! Communicate prominently, keep it extremely simple and extremely short.

Why do ideas seem to recycle here every four to six months?

I think I'll just sing a song:

"To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven"

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate..."

@ KBC

Did you read my posts during the TG debacle? Apparently nyet.

I agree with a code of conduct but with that good idea a bad one forms like the people thats ging to have to enforce this dont get me wrong im pretty cool with every1 one tt and ptt but there is a lot of personal issues going on on tt and people would be able to take advantage of that if they had the power so tt I think is fine as it is :o

All we need is one rule "respect thy neighbour" this applies to everyone.

Well, today's the 15th, and there is some support. I've heard from a couple more via e-mail and the posts in here are mainly supportive. So far the only negative feedback has been from an imposter in a SW server, which makes me think I'll be asking for more input soon.

If you want to make any more comments, today's the day. I'm going to ask for a lock on this thread tomorrow.

@LGM,

I'll be honest w/ya, I think that, yes the game rules should be posted in a central area like on the PTT news page or something(good idea KBC), because I got tired of others screaming bloody murder about "bming" in Indie Scrum, or "camping", or whatever, and some vigilants like to hammer hard on those who don't know better. But as for the "conduct" part, like if you're talking about "behaviour", then I have to say nothing, except that it's simply a matter of common sense/coutesy. There are those who do and there will be those who don't regardless of any Code of Conduct, posted or otherwise. I've seen some respected folks differ on what is acceptable language. For example, I've seen one (respected)server host publically say that swearing was ok, if it wasn't "excessive". What's that?! Look people, kids play here remember? My first reaction to this post on this topic LGM, is that I didn't even want to comment, because as long as this game exists, PTT/TT will always have "issues" that will NOT be solved by even the most sincere of us. That's why I hosted my own server, so I could have "some" control, but soon realized that some how, the idiocy creeps in, or it's just too tiring to combat, because there are those who search out ways to break through the lines of defense. That's why I don't and won't host anymore. I visit servers normally when they're empty or have some respectable folks in there. But if it gets nasty, then I leave immediatey. I sometimes just hangout in my own server too. For the most part, I'm getting bored w/TT and all the controversy. It's only a matter of time before I'm out. "Online" is just not the best deal in town sometimes. I wanted to email you this, but I figured I might just as well share it publically. I expect some to "poo poo" my post, but I couldn't care less. If anyone does, then it just helps to confirm my point. I also know that there are "some" who will agree too. Thanks so much LGM for your interest and for your effort. I just feel you're wasting your time here.

Sincerly,

KC

Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at 1:48:02 PM

@KC I get your point, maybe in some servers late at night its ok to swear but there are kids playing all over the world so what is late at night, if you want that type of talk create your own server and lock it. I am in UK and my son plays at weekends, when I have him, and my daughter is getting interested too. As you said common sense is what is needed with all players.

Well, the 15th is over, so feel free to lock this thread...

Honestly, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I don't want to waste time on this issue if it isn't wanted, but there is a group of people who want it. Not a big group, but they are here... (wanders off mumbling about trolls and assorted punks and little TTers...)

Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 11:19:31 AM

@LGM
If it means anything, we should still proceed with composing a simple to the point Code of Conduct for TT and PTT. I am sure -z- will post it here somewhere. I will also post it on my TT City site.
We need to address in game and online conduct.

By the way, I know as a fact that there are dozens of players who want this. Many are even taking matters into their own hands like GQ.Shooter who hosts her own server because she had enough of the trolls.
She will not hesitate to kick someone out of the server if they start misbehaving. No way Jose!
She's fair too because she gives everyone a second chance before banning. I've seen other admins take more action lately too such as Sluggy who booted a veteran for using an alias and wouldn't reveal who he was. I laughed as I thought it ironic because I wasn't using an alias at the time. Phew!

Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 11:45:12 AM

I'm playing without my pants and there's nothing you can do about it.

Na na na na na na!

Where is GQ when I want to go dancing?

Say.... Are you that "DEMO(Nopants)" character? Is this a confession?

Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 12:12:24 PM

No I'm DEMO(Hadpants)

Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 12:20:15 PM

LOL... Proving the point why we need the Code of Conduct!!!
Hey, I've seen a player named Sweat Pants...but not Demo had pants.

@LGM,

Sorry for such a negative spout off, but I was venting some long time on the mind thoughts on things around here. I wasn't putting down your idea, only something that I think you can't control, and that's the results. I felt really bad for posting that and wished I had thought it through first. Par for the course for me. I know you're sincere and I don't want to squash your motivation. More power to ya! :) As for me, I'll just continue my own course.

Thanks again LGM,
KC

KC- I didn't take what you said as anything more than frustration with the way TT/PTT has been going recently. I've been getting frustrated with it too. That feeling was what caused me to put this idea out there. You're a real asset to this place, and I hope we don't lose you entirely.

@all- I'm still not sure which path this leads to, though. On an encouraging note, I've been enjoying the posts today a whole lot more than the last month or two. I hope we can get back to the fun and to thought provoking threads, and lay off the bickering. It wears thin after a while.

I'll give you my take on it, woo”oo.

The streaker pics aren't R rated. No genitalia are on display. I wouldn't have posted them, but I didn't find them offensive in any way. I could have lived my whole life without seeing that guy's butt crack, but not a big deal to me.

Please understand that this is only my opinion. I don't know how others would see it. Maybe Napalm's testing something, or maybe he's just being funny. It may illustrate why we could use clear guidlines about some things, though...

Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at 8:25:04 AM

No, he doesn't get a warning or ANYTHING (besides a bad cold)!

What a day!

Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at 9:32:00 AM

Napalm has bitched out napalm for said offensive photo.

Napalm has recieved 1st verbal warning in Silenced an banning thread.

Woo”oo~(”Ș), you should be thanking me. If I posted a pic of my own, you'd probably leave this community for good. ;)

I want his posts deleted at our Army forum.
