!!! THINKTANKS CONVENTION !!!

UPDATE: Registration page is complete! Click here!

Date: Sunday, June 5, 2005
Time: 10 am - 8 pm
City: Chicago, IL
Location: Holiday Inn 4th floor conference room.
Cost/person: $25 (includes cost of meeting room and lunch)
LAN capacity: 16
Maximum # of Attendees: 20
Registration Deadline: 4/30/05

Convention Pre-Party: Hosted by Norky!! More info here .

Yes you heard right! A ThinkTanks Convention will be held this summer in the Chicago area. Mark your calendars!

This is an opportunity to not only meet some fellow TTers, but an extremely rare opportunity to play ThinkTanks on a Local Area Network (translation: NO LAG) in the same room with some of the finest players in the world.

Can you imagine hearing your opponents tank exploding right next to you after you nail them with an area effect? Or better yet, can you imagine shouting "die you bastard!" directly to your opponent in person?

Our idea is this. We show up on Saturday evening or Sunday early morning. I have reserved a conference room with a central table and 17 chairs around it (boardroom style). The room has high-speed internet access. At 10 am on Sunday morning, we begin set-up. We will set up one or two LANs (depending on turnout), each with a dedicated computer to be used as a server. Ethernet hubs/routers will also be set up to accommodate 10 players per server.

Participants must bring their own laptop computer with a registered copy of TT. You will also need a 10' ethernet cable, and an external mouse (and keyboard probably too). You should also be sure to have the latest TT_Mod_Pack® installed and the MM_Observer script. Non-participants are welcome to come also.

Continental breakfast and a simple lunch buffet will be provided. I have also reserved a block of 10 rooms. For now they are King bed rooms for $89. To get this rate just tell them you are with the "ThinkTanks Convention" (yes - for real!). I will see if I can get a better rate on rooms with Queen beds.

Leopard and Chief have generously volunteered to provide servers and routers/hubs. Napalm will help coordinate software configurations. We will need a couple of more volunteers to coordinate some pleasing refreshments!

Wooooot! XD

EDIT: Hotel security is very tight and everyone who wants to just "show up" needs to actually register before the deadline (which will be around the end of April). The hotel contract is very specific and they take this very serioulsy. Registering adds your name to the attendee list which I need to submit well beforehand. Thx!

I'm probably the most secure person you will ever get to write a message to bozo

Good, I've needed to get a top secret message to bozo but have never had the means to do so... Thanks Hank.

Wish I were there. Maybe next year. Hey, what were the scores of the matches?

Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 3:24:03 PM

I doubt anybody remembers any scores. We never played any trourneys. We just played purely for fun, and boy was that a real nice change of pace from the extreme competitiveness that can be found online.

Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 4:37:33 PM

I did record some games. I'll see what I have and if there's anything interesting I'll post it. I also had the same vibe, I really wasn't all that competitive. Surprising considering many of us are so competitive in pick and especially in league games. It was oddly comfortable.

Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 4:46:27 PM

Sounds like you all had a blast. I really wanted to make it..... Hopefully I can meet you all the next time!!! :)

Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 4:57:13 PM

Good to see all your mugs!!!!!! XD
Glad to hear you all had fun.
If there is a convention on the westcoast next time, I'll be there.

Too bad you old folks can't handle my drugs! XD

P.S.> You guys never seem a picture of me......hmmmmmmmmm maybe I'll post one..... Maybe

Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 5:17:08 PM

I wouldn't be old enough to go to the convention I 11 lol...Don't make a big deal I like playing this game but just a few minor adjustments would be nice!

Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 5:20:37 PM

Yes I have to admit for the first time ever I never looked at the scores of the games ! It was very nice to just play for fun for once. I did enjoy the looks we gave to one another as we killed or scored though and the sound was way to funny on those Bounce Back power ups. It was like listening to a wave go around the room ! Lets not forget the Area Effects, sounded like a bomb going of in the room ! I can not wait for the next one ! B)

Tuesday, June 07, 2005 at 5:36:16 PM

Ditto for what mm said.....but I have to admit I did hunt down lep a few times....lol

Make the next convention at Seattle or Portland. I was too busy to come to Chicago - besides I did not want to say 'I flew all the way to Chicago to play a video game!' WOuld have been payign a buck for every bounceback shot! XD
Glad you all went and enjoyed. I bet the nametags were fun!

Nice video RX! Did you get any in-game video? I thought I saw you hooking up your camera to the powerbook. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure which camera it was (video or still).

Thursday, June 09, 2005 at 9:12:28 PM

Woot! Great video RX!
Love the photo near the end of everyone applauding RustBucket. He almost made it into the shot! :)

@JJ: Some of that stuff doesn't really make sense out of context, but I might just try that.

Friday, June 10, 2005 at 7:22:29 AM

Not quite sure if this is what I think it is, but it might help viewing RX's movie.
Quicktime 7 for Windows Preview.

Saturday, June 11, 2005 at 10:36:09 AM

Yeah Windows users need to download that preview version to view the movie. I couldn't get it to play in Qtime 6, but the preview version works.

Saturday, June 11, 2005 at 3:09:43 PM

Quicktime 7 don't work with windows mellenium.. Guess im out of luck on seeing that vidio,, can anyone convert it?

Sunday, June 12, 2005 at 3:57:17 PM

This expalins why we had some server difficulty with 2 servers on one switch. Wish I knew this then.

(56K)
When TT searches for games it does 2 searches. One from the master server that tells it where all the public games are. Then it does a second check on the LAN looking for local game. (This is why sometimes you see two entries for your own server in the games list.)

If a firewall is blocking port 28001 the server won't be seen on the mater server list.

The LAN game search only checks the local computers for games running on port 28000. So if there is a local server running on 28001, it won't see it on the LAN.
