The home of the 40+ Club is now Planetthinktanks.com

No, this is not specifically for those with gray/thinning hair...

To become a member, play Regular Battlemode and try to break a score of 40, then post your screengrab on this thread (go to www.uploadit.org for easy image-hosting).

The only rules are that you 1) don´t change the numbers in a graphics program and 2) use the TT default battle settings (no creating a game of your own with all bronze bots). You can play on or- off-line, but again, use the TT defaults and the original game settings. The rules rely heavily on your own honor, but most of us know who is worthy enough to end up on this thread anyway.

Good luck!

Sorry, Zoon, they all have to be gold. At least that's how I did it.

40+ Club welcomes CTF Legend MOE!

Zoon... Pretty obvious you're playing with Bronze bots there. Give it a try in the default mode (Quickplay, or one of the Shockwave BM servers) and I'm sure you'll make it. Good luck!

Hate to dig up such an old thread, but I asked about this and found it while looking for something else. Here's my submission though..

@LilalienD

Holy smokes. You did it in a light tank too? Which map? Damn.

I knew you were a good scrummer, but not that good a battlemoder. I will watch my arse from now on around ya!

Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 11:46:38 AM

Thank ya :) It was done on Medulla Mesa. My first attempt was on Hypothalamus Hills and ended with 38. I've only been tweeking my BM skills to help out my scrum game ;)

OM

Heh. Nice job LilAlienD. That beats my 46 in a light. And it wasn't easy getting that many kills either.

I have noticed that my BM game (when I play on the rare occasion these days) has improved since using that 2x radar that was recently passed around. It just makes targeting easier somehow. Wasn't that yours LilAlienD? Or was it Corey? Sorry, I get you two mixed up sometimes.

Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 3:46:21 PM

Just for kicks I thought I'd give it a shot and damn if I made it on my first try! It's been weeks since I've played the bots!

I've been playing battlemode with real players a lot, so it obviously paid off! I used the default quick play mode.

It was a lot of work and fun! I think 50 is possible! I goofed around too much and missed a lot of kills.

I hope I am now a member!!!

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 12:24:14 AM

OM,

Yeah it was mine. I gave it to Corey to help w/ the Scrum League and wouldn't ya know it.... It leaked to EVERYONE!!! :) Not complaining or anything, just found it funny that within' about a day it got posted in the forum somewhere. I don't know how I managed to win without it :) Although I will say I didn't use it to much in BM, just like normal radar use (Clump of red dots over there, I should go).

GJ Pasiano,

I think 50 is definitely possible as well. I'm thinking I might even try it at home over the weekend. The 48 was done at work :) where I can't concentrate a full 100% and have to pause every now and then everytime I hear someone getting close to my office :) (Lookin' over my shoulder the whole game kinda thing).

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 11:01:51 AM

@LilalienD

I am sure you will do it. You were so close! Good luck! I will try it as well.

By the way, have you ever tried a Heavy? I seem to do much better with a heavy than a light. What does everyone think?

Does using a Heavy guarantee a better score in battlemode? Just wondering...

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 11:37:28 AM

I think about it every now and then. "Well, Hum bot does extremely well in a heavy, and its a bot. If there was a skilled human player behind the wheel they should make a killing." Then I think about having to factor in all the time it drains making it across the board after killing several tanks in one area.

I'll try it out too :)

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 12:02:20 PM
OM

Of course it can be done in a heavy, but not everyone can play a Heavy tank well. It takes more specialized skills than other tanks. For one thing, you get a lot less rounds per clip than a Light, so you can't just spray bullets in the general vicinity of tanks and hope to hit. You have to make almost every round count, or you'll be waiting for your gun to reload more often than hitting targets. And yeah, the slowness of it's movement takes some patience. I personally suck in a Heavy, which is why I ended up getting my 46 points in a Light.

I was thinking about this 40+ challenge the other day since the thread was revived, and thought about a truly ultimate challenge. One that would be significantly tougher than just getting 40 kills.

Can anyone score 20+ kills AND shut out ALL of the bots while doing it? Meaning, no score for any bots when the timer counts down to 0 except yourself? I know for a fact this is VERY tough. The only 2 tanks in the standard bot config that give you a run for your money are Hum and Ri.

If I were attempting this, and in some ways I have in the past without really being conscious of it, is to actively go after Hum|Bot|. He generally makes the most kills of the bots, so he can keep the other bots down to 0, but you would HAVE to go after him to keep his score down as well. Not a pleasant proposition, especially in a Light tank. Maybe some expert Heavy player can do it though. Anyway, I think that would be a truly tough test of skill, since you'd be going head to head with an arguably very good heavy tank for most of the game, while still trying to score as much as possible.

Any takers? XD

OM

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 12:37:41 PM

The 20+ Shut Out club.... Hmm..... Looks like I have a new challenge on my hands.

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 1:26:05 PM

@OM

Great idea. I always try to shutout the bots whenever I play solo or team scrum against them. I can usually do it, but it's tough sometimes because of dumb luck and spawns. Sometimes I get spawns from hell and there's nothing you can do to stop the bots from scoring a goal.

Still, it's fun trying! Good for defensive skills.

I think the advantage Battlemode has over scrum when it comes to shutting out the bots is that you can actually take away points by killing whichever bot has a point (usually HUM!). Still, sounds like a herculean task!

I would like to see a veteran shutout a bunch of demo's and noobs! Now THAT would be fun to watch!

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 3:43:34 PM
OM

Hmm, well, I tried the shutout thing just now… no dice. Couldn't even come close, at least on my first attempt. I had trouble keeping Hum down below 3 or 4 kills throughout the game. Problem was, if I concentrated on him solely, other bots, like Gul and Ri would get kills, or worse, Hum would kill me! :S

Anyway, as I was playing along, I realized I was having a killer game, so I abandoned the whole shut-out idea and went for my best score.

Click on it for a full image at the 00 count.

And here's the final screen:

So that answers the question if 50 is possible. Perhaps we need to start a 55 and over club? :)

Awesome! Holy smokes, what's next? 60!!!!

Hey, maybe we need to make them all gold Heavies????

;)

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 10:27:39 PM

In LC50's shot of Rabban, what is the skin he's using?

It rocks!

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 10:47:49 PM

Ive's seen a regular player break 60 on a standard SW BM server I was in. It was all the standard bots, Demo (Bolo), him....i remember hearing later that it was hoosane...

It all depends on the map and the player and bot spawns

Yea! I did it XD No more honorable mention! List me as an official member baby! B)

Sunday, June 20, 2004 at 7:10:05 PM

I am surprised you guys use skins like that... They could easily be made into black maps except all tanks are highlighted pink or something. Unfair advantage IMO

And why are yours so blurry? Bah

Well, I am 17 so it is only proper for me to post this SS (btw, I was like the only tank on green team ;) )

Sunday, June 20, 2004 at 8:47:37 PM

@Filbert - That's the first heavy skin I made and it's on my website. Frankly, I think it's my worst heavy skin, but I'm glad you like it.

I'm intrigued by the 20+ shut out challege in a heavy. Give me a couple of months and I'll see how I do. ;)

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 12:32:16 PM

The ONLY game I managed to play this weekend was one QuickPlay, in an attempt to make the 20+ Shut out. That shit's hard. I ended up w/ 29, and shut out Ri |Bot| and Hum |Bot| but freakin' Tom |Bot| (off all people... Bots) ended with 3. He's was killin' em, I actually started playing more focused on him then Hum and Ri. Weird.

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 2:23:33 PM

Shutting out Hum and Ri is a major accomplishment in itself! PROPS LilAlienD! B)

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 3:15:36 PM

Well, I tried it and ended with 42 and Hum at 14 and some others. Gotta change the paradigm. Spawning makes a difference as well when driving the heavy.

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 4:01:33 PM

I haven't tried to join the club lately. Will have to do that. The only significant accomplishment lately was playing solo Team Scrum against 6 Expert Bots in Light Tanks (custom game, obviously) in The Spooky Bowl of Death. Just me against 6 gold brains. Final score was 12-12. I was hoping to do better than that, but it's hard when you're on the opposite side of the map from the flag with 5 enemy tanks bearing down on you. After a while they tend to all move together in a swarm. It'd be quite interesting to watch if they weren't so all firing nonstop at you. :P

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 4:21:07 PM

Master TMO,

That sounds like a fun challenge..... Yet another game I have to try :)

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 4:39:02 PM

I have gotten quite good at dodging incoming fire as a result. It's proven to be quite frustrating to the other players in normal Scrum games. There have been a couple times people have been shouting "Just SHOOT him!" XD

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 5:54:20 PM

I've noticed that as well. I've been making longer and longer successful runs lately. I've been telling myself to start playing BattleModes for a few weeks now, but got the PS league to practice.

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 6:15:59 PM

Welp, for my first try at 40+, I failed. Only got 31. :[ Better luck next time.

(update: 34 this morning. Climbing...)

Since you mentioned that I had to try out : )

You don't have to let go of one rope before grabbing the other. But you'll have to let go of one if you want to swing forward.

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 4:29:59 PM

I smell something rotten here. (Sniff sniff)...

Is there a way to custimize your mod in such a way to cheat?

I'm not acusing you of that, Triv, but you are very well known as a good modder. (some call you a modder f@@#r).

Would putting more powerups help?

Again, there needs to be an official battlemoding testing server.

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 5:55:26 PM

Where's the brain in the tank on the right? ;) Are you SURE this is unmodified TT play?? (j/k) It's a lot easier to win if you de-brain them all before the game starts. XD

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 5:56:18 PM

Yeah its very hilarious screenshot! I think its my best and same time luckiest screenshot while I was playing or have you seen many screenshots of non brained bot whose driving? :P

It's a lot easier to win if you de-brain them all before the game starts.

LOL! Mayby I should try that one out ;)

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 8:33:48 PM

@Spartanleader, you got a PC or MAC?

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 8:38:15 PM

I got a pc

Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 9:09:37 PM

2 ways... The easiest would be to push the "printscreen" botton on your keypad. Then going to "Paint" (usually located in your start menue or accessories), click on edit, go to paist, then save.

The best way to do it is press ctrl P while playing. This'll take a screenshot. You can hold 6 screeny's at a time. You then go to your TT folder and you'll be able to open up your screeny's and save them.

From there you got to webhost it. You can go to www.uploadit.org and set up an account. I do believe they offer a free service... I personally use the upgraded service. It's only $8 a year and you can do a lot more with it. Once it's webhosted, you can copy and paist the link and use the image brackest to post the pic.

Hope that helps :)

*gnnrrgg* I seem to have hit a ceiling: 34, 32, 27, 34. This last game I started out spawning between Hum and Gum constantly. Got depressing for a bit - 1 kill, 1 death. Hum keeps stealing my kills, too - the bastard. :P

Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 10:26:16 AM
OM

Hum keeps stealing my kills, too - the bastard.

Hehe. Yeah, that's why I shadow Hum in games like that. You need to beat him at his own game. Let him soften up tanks around you, while you stay out of his view behind him, then take the kill when you can. Usually he ends up "spotting" you and turns to take you on, but it's often best to run the other way and chase some other smoking tank. Just keep at it. You'll get there. Keep in mind that playing bots requires a different strategy than playing humans.

Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 11:03:46 AM

Keep at it TMO... In the great words of Rob Schneider, "YOU CAN DO IT". As OM said, there's a different strategy to playing against the bots. They have a few weakness' that you can always use to your advantage and rack up the kills. I'd give you some tips, but then EVERYONE would see em and rack up their scores XD

Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 11:15:13 AM

Well, I know a few tricks for fighting them, but they're not all that applicable here. Cliffdwelling and shooting them as they pass overhead doesn't work when they're busy fighting each other. Yah, I'll get there. It's just a bit frustrating to keep hitting 34 and no higher. XD

Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 1:59:06 PM

So, in regards to "cliffhanging" there's a bit more to it. The trick there is to get near an edge that's easy to drive over the lip of, then unload half a clip on them to get their attention. They'll automatically turn to chase you (even if they're already working on someone else). Then you just have to back up over the lip and watch them sail over you. I've done had it work out on 3 or 4 of them at a time. While 2 are fighting each other, unload on both of them and they both turn and chase you ignoring each other :) :)
