Ok people of PTT.....
Our conversations here are based on the written word.... Please take that extra second before you click the Submit button and check your spelling....

And FWIW....
"Too, Two, and To" are all different words with different purposes.

"Too"
---> I want to play too.
---> You are too good.
---> My skirt is too short.

"Two"
---> I'll be back in two minutes.
---> We played two games.
---> You two are a good team.

"To"
---> I need to go to the store.
---> To have and to have not.
---> I want to watch TV tonight.

Get it? Good.
I'll be watching....... Don't mess up again or I will start posting your infractions.....
:)

Katherine
I need TO get a life
Maybe I will get TWO
Then I can have my cake and eat it TOO.

Is K8 a word 2? :)

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 8:37:42 AM

If your skirt is too short...I'll be back in two minutes since I need to go to the store. ;)

You can always have your cake and eat it too. You just can't eat your cake and have it too. %) (Or is that you're cake???)

Now if I can just figure out its vs it's. :(

Generally, a good rule of thumb is that an apostrophe followed by an "s" denotes ownership.
However, as pointed out by Ben (below), It's is one of the words where the rule is backwards.
It's = it is
Its is a possessive form of IT.

It's clear that this sentence has no ownership.

PTT has a bounty of information in its forums.

KBC
K8 is an abbreviation. I no yur jst bng clever.... Bt kds r not getting the 411....

Instant messaging is going to ruin the next generations ability to put together a proper sentence.

It already has.
Have you seen some of the sentences in these forums by the younger members?

Oh my..

OM

^ agreed. With the exception of a few here and there, for example asterisk, who I've not seen lately, most of the youth here can't put a proper sentence together to save their life. And I suspect many of them don't even care.

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 9:17:21 AM

Thanks OM, Actually there are some that are outstanding young guys. I should not have generalized everyone in one group.

Maverick
Devils Wings
Law
Dark Mumke

All are outstanding young guns who represent themselves in a great light.

Please add anyone I missed or was not aware they are part of treh younger crowd.

Don't get me started on the Your vs You're thing.....

Heck, you already got me started...

"Your" relates to ownership of the person being addressed.
---> I like your booty.
---> Your house or mine?
---> Your clothing is optional.

"You're" is simply a concatenated version of "You Are". Any time you want to write You Are, you can shorten it to You're.
---> You're very fit.
---> You're well groomed.
---> You're Naked!!!

If you're ever confused about whether to use "your" or "you're", just ask yourself if you could use "You Are". If the answer is yes, then "you're" is your way to go.

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 10:42:49 AM

Actually what I think is a total riot is in-game chat during an intense game. After a great goal, under great time pressure it's often hard to bang out an accurately typed comment. The timing of a comment is more important than the actual spelling. As long as the intent comes across. Like sometimes you will see a whole string of comments from everyone filled with glorious typos, but they are right on time:

"moice@!"
"gfj"
"/gj!"
"g12"
"[noice/"
"[/gdi!!"

That is a total crack-up!

I really enjoyed this book Eats, Shoots, And Leaves . Or am I confusing it with this one Eats Shoots And Leaves ?

Last edited: Monday, January 10, 2005 at 11:09:44 AM

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 11:09:20 AM

RX, that always cracks me up too.

I have found a number of typos that I generate because I am using macros for many of my comments. The one that cracks me up the most and I have done it a bunch of times is:
"waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

It is probably related to me typing a macro button and immediately typing the drive and left turn keys.

The other macro related issues makes it sound like I am typing in pig-italian.
"Nice a"
"Thank you a"
"Very good a"

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 11:09:32 AM
OM

@ RX, those are great! I've been guilty of typing that "n12" one on a few occasions. LOL! I guess it's just a bit hard to type a coherent chat sentence and drive with WASD keys at the same time. Heh.

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 11:16:51 AM

Clearly, typing full sentences in the game is counter productive... I think the chat-speak way of typing is perfectly valid and fun... I just don't like the fact that kids are learning that type of spelling in their normal communications.

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 11:22:13 AM

Problem solution: Hotkeys.

Guess how old I am, and guess how old the ppl are that say stuf like ths.

Hey can someone teach me the difference between "no" and "know"? %)
I keep mixing them up.

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 11:34:08 AM

In fact it is kind of eerie to see perfect sentence structure, punctuation and capitalization during in-game chat from pre-programmed hot keys. Nothing like a bunch of rushed, hacked out typo comments followed by:

"Cover me please, I am headed to the Goal!", or
"I need to Pass the Scrum!", etc.

Kind of an unnatural ring to it. Then there's the hyroglyphics <==0==> and all that.

Also funny is the mistaken hitting of the hotkeys. This happens to me all the time. I intend to type some meaningful masterpiece of expression and then I look up at the screen and all I see is:

"baaaaaa"
"baaaaaa"

Then I ::turns red:: got to retype my masterpiece again and the timing is long gone. :o

TG, actually, you're wrong about it's and its. It's ONLY denotes it is, while its in fact does indicate ownership. This is one of the very few exceptions to

A good rule of thumb is that an apostrophe followed by an "s" denotes ownership.

If you want, I'll look it up, I might be wrong, but I don't think so..

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 12:08:03 PM

Heh, I should have looked at this thread earlier. Kind of fun.

First off, "Its" denotes pronoun ownership in the same what that "his" and "her" does. Notice there is no apostrophe in those either.
RX has his scrum.
Tankgirl has her scrum.
Ribot has its scrum.

"It's" is a contraction of "it is."
It's infuriating how Ribot cliff-dives with the scrum in its grasp.

The too "its" are very easy two cross up. I've made the error to often myself. :P

(And everyone knows how I sometimes fumble with my hot-keys and get chat-flooded. Gerk!)

There goes (not go's or gos) my 19" CRT.

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 12:31:39 PM

Or even They're goes or Their goes

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 12:35:36 PM

They're: is a contraction of They Are

Their: indicates ownership by more than one subject

There: has a great many uses, none of which are to be confused with the above two.
(Racer has it right) There Goes.

We should start a new team called "SC," the Spelling Checkers.

Already an SC, but that's a good idea, except for all the people hoo tak n shorthand on TT, like so.

OM

I personally don't mind a misspelling here or there, or some misuse of grammar in a forum environment. The mixing up of "to" and "too", or "your" and "you're", etc. This IS just a forum after all, and most people won't take so much time to spellcheck their posts before hitting submit. I tend to check my posts pretty thoroughly, but that's me. I don't expect everyone to do it.
If a person is spelling poorly on their resumé or in business correspondence, then I suggest that person seriously consider improving their spelling and grammar.

However, the posts that annoy me are the ones with such bad spelling and grammar that it takes me 3 or 4 passes to understand what the heck the poster is trying to say. Even worse are the ones that have both bad spelling and grammar AND no periods!! Oy!! Those types are really grating on me. Nohing worse than a run on sentence with bad spelling! It's like trying to read an alien language.

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 1:22:20 PM

I realize that, but do you not recall you did the exact same thing to me a week or two ago, and thought I was mad? Yet here you are being corrected, correcting someone else. Just thought it was humorous. Made me smile.
Kind of like the time when you would be correct and the teacher would be wrong... ;)

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 1:26:40 PM

Ah yes, punctuation! Now that's a fun thing to mess up.

Capitalize and add some punctuation to the following statement to make it proper:

Woman without her man is nothing

Got it? Now read the next post. ;)

The joke claims that stereotypically, a man will write:

Woman, without her man, is nothing!

The woman will instead write:

Woman! Without her, man is nothing!

Yes, folks, you must learn to use punctuation to get your ideas across. XD

Monday, January 10, 2005 at 2:56:35 PM

There, their, and they're.

They're another set of words often misused. Even by me sometimes.
...but I usually get the two/to/too right.

What about the leet? The leet is the all mighty language of the haxorz, and take forever to perfect, much like English. I myself type pretty good, unless I want to type quickly, therefore I type shorthand. Also an easy way to remember 'its' and 'it's', 'it's' means 'it is' whereas 'its'...well means 'its'. :)
