What up all?

For those of you that know me, you know I'm fair AND hot-headed. Um..., ok VERY hot-headed XD

For those of you that don't, I'm one of the vice presidents of UF and have been playing this game for over a year. I believe in fair play. I always choose the underdogs side when joining a game. Back in the day, you showed honesty and respect for fellow players and, in return, those players show respect to you. People were more interested in having fair games then they were about points or staying together.

Today, I joined a game with an alias where 4 veteran players wanted to stay together. Instead of evening out the teams to have a good game, they tried to get every player who join to go to the other team. Instead of having a good game, they wanted to beat up on 6 other players.

The problem with this game is respect. These 4 veterans wanted to beat up on people. That's not the way it used to be. That's not the way I learned to play. So my theory is as follows:

The veterans, as a whole, have stopped caring.

The veterans used to teach the younger players NOT ONLY how to play better, but how to be better sportsman. Obviously that no longer takes place. For those of you on that server tonight, I'm sure there are some great games being played on the demo servers, please just stay away from CTF.

I'm like u, Sil, and choose the underdog's side, and I sometimes put quite a few people on /ignore, in situations similar to the one you described... :(

I use multi-billion dollar military satellites to find tupperware hidden in the woods... What do YOU do?

Tuesday, May 03, 2005 at 5:50:15 PM

I don't play enough TT to be able to do that anymore.
I'm sure this is the case with the other "good" veterans.
The veterans who are low enough to stoop to that level need a severe whacking with my fish.

@ Sil= My favorite and true motto for videogames

"Hate The Player, Not The Game" XD

Ok, anyways, on topic, I really don't care if I'm matched up with unfair teams, I'm always looking for new challenges to increase my combat skills (but I'm sure most just desire to have a good and relaxing time) so yes, I agree with you sil

Dang IMPOSTORS! %)

Sil is right he's a good guy and he knows what he is talkin about yes I know I've stayed on a team tellin someone else to change teams but sometimes you want to be with your friends but I'll try to be on the underdog team more often. Winning isn't everything, as long as you have fun.

Tuesday, May 03, 2005 at 6:32:44 PM

I have always gone on the underdog team or what ever team needs help. I like to have a fair game. Is there a point in beating some other team up other then trying to make you'r self look good. Whats the fun in that? I always like to have a good challenge, but loosing isn't what I have in mined either.

Hey sib, since when am I a veteran scrummer? I was one of the 4 on that team vs. 6.

Tuesday, May 03, 2005 at 7:50:10 PM

Hey fatchick, are you not a veteran?? You joined PTT March 18, 2004. That's over a year. Not only that, but I don't think there is a TT skill that you couldn't handle.

Look, the point of this is this: yourself and 3 other veterens took on a bunch of newbies. I'm not here to name names or do anything else other than point something out. Just so you know, this same topic has come up inside of UF as players have witnessed other UF players beating up on others.

Needless to say, that doesn't happen anymore.

The next time yourself, x, x, and x decide to beat up on people just remember this: it's those newbie's that keep this game running...

It seems that lately lots of the "veteran" players are being real a**holes.

Egos need to be stroked.

Tuesday, May 03, 2005 at 8:15:54 PM

Well, I dunno. I dont think anyone thinks of me as a scrummer. I picked a color to make teams even and played the game. I didnt know peeps would get mad at me for it. I think of myself as pretty noob at scrum. If its any consolation, that team got beat a few games later.

I'm going to post in this thread.
---
While I put my thoughts together, a warning to you, Date Man:
I'm more than happy to put you up for a vote for the ban list. I have screenies of your aliases and your comments, your low-brow stupidity and BMing, over the past few weeks, and I have no reservations about abusing my admin privileges to shut your act down.
----
Now that I'm rolling:
Sil, Who was it, myself, e*t, fatchick, and who? E*t and I rarely play together, and neither of us wanted to join the other team. As we were winning, we requested that the 4 on 5 be made a 4 on 6 as people showed up. One might think of this as an attempt to level, not an attempt to punish.
Why do vets want to stick together? Because the noobs and the kids are out of freaking control lately, be it the daytime American youth coming out of school, or the nighttime English cats with more mouth than game. I'm ore than happy to rat you people out, but you and everyone else already knows who you people are.
Pick your poison, I wish the vets had more control over the game, not less.
Why are we being assholes? Because you kids are ruining this thing. Kids, noobs, griefers, whatever. An ass pain is an ass pain. Yours are the egos that need the stroking.
---
Maybe that made any sense. Figure it out for yourselves.
Whatever. I'll reiterate this comment that I made during the game before you hit boil and your lid popped off: Any 6 should be able to take on any 4. Period. By not trying, complaining about imbalance and bailing out without effort, you make your comments go unheard. Next time someone on a 6 man team complains that the teams are imbalanced because he's afraid to lose, my response will be less delicate.
Man up.

Wednesday, May 04, 2005 at 7:04:43 AM

I was one of the newbies that was there. I've played maybe six times I like to pass more than make the goal. Sometimes
when I'm blocking I accidently hit my teammate unintentionaly and get the flag if I'm near the goal I'm not gonna give it back because the other team is after it I'm gonna go for the goal.i don't have this big ego where I have to be the hero scoring 5+ a game.i like that you stick up for the newbies sibercalis.if the newbies are to get better and be the best we have to play with the best.i've seen alot of oldies/veterans quit or leave the game and get mad for the same thing they do to the newbies that maybe the new ones did by mistake.lets have fun, thats what thinktanks is about.

Yes first game he was, this is a misunderstanding here lets just have fun

Wednesday, May 04, 2005 at 9:12:44 AM

I think tally hit the nail on the head. As for your "theory" sibar-whats-it - the vets are probably the few who DO care. We are the ones who play the game for hours on end, organize leagues, give this website/game it's personality, etc.

6 on 4, and you still lost? Can you say "Jerry Lewis Brigade?"

Wednesday, May 04, 2005 at 10:59:03 AM

Goodness, sounds like Tally might need to move on - maybe you'd get along with a group of preschoolers.

I AM aware of you abusing your admin priviledges - should someone be able to push you this far? This should be noted.

I use all sorts of name - it's fun and people know who I am. When I make a goal I say "what a day" no matter what my name is.

It's just a game that I play when I'm taking a break.

ANY 6 can take on 4 skilled players - think again - that's an idiotic statement.

Can you paint your face white and act like you're in a box?

Just an idea - take a break.

Wednesday, May 04, 2005 at 12:43:00 PM

Ok this is getting depressing if we could just put our issues to the side or figure them out and stop them we wouldn't be having this talk. You guys are argueing, believe what you want but please just have fun and make sure everyone else is having fun don't make a big deal out of it hey 6 newbies might like having their tanks handed to them against 4 pros just make sure everyones happy and your happy ok?

Wednesday, May 04, 2005 at 1:21:38 PM

Better to keep it 5-5.
Usually when a team is soundly defeated (scores like 15-4, etc.), there is always 1, 2 or 3 members leaving and making room for newcomers, or for the players to switch.
6-4 is skewed no matter how you put it. If I'm on the 4 players side it's depressing, if I'm on the 6 players side even more depressing. :)

Hola!

I wasn't present during the game that Sibercalis mentions, but I too have seen uneven teams too often... In CTF. No other gametype gets uneven teams so frequently as CTF from what I've witnessed. It makes the game not fun. I've been in games (that's plural) where 4-5 "vets" get in CTF game as blue and my players in green are crap who shoot me alot and don't know what a scrum is. I go on cyclicly playing a silly game of stealing the scrum and dancing around the field near my goal, just hoping for teammates to cooperate and eeking out points here and there. I don't know how many times I've had to say "I'm on your team, (insert team killer name here)!" And how many times has anyone been playing CTF 1 on 1 and the other player GOES ON YOUR SIDE cause you are winning??? What is that crap? Enough rantin' Bertha calm down. Ok me do. Go on tell them more now. Ok me do.

I love playing CTF more when there is a good balance of decent players.

@ Cat RE: "(I have gotten my but kicked by names I have never seen before) Why use a alias?" :

Me use alias ALOT in CTF cuz me notice ALOT more bming action otherwise. When people have to choose who they are going to shoot when they have a choice of two, they usually shoot at the player who poses the most threat in the game. (If me get into any CTF tournaments I'm playing as alias-free Chop! Chop!)

Me love you all. :)

Wednesday, May 04, 2005 at 8:23:07 PM

Well I tired to stay out of this but its still going on !
Every thing from whinning about camping in TS, when its a spawn or getting beat to the goal and lose a goal to other team you hear this, "Oh you camper !"

Now this one was a real work of art, you have 4 on 3, Team stacked on the 4 side and you make the comment as the score reaches 8 - 2, " Wake me when this is over ! Or This is real fun ! " yet no body does anything. Then when the score got to 14 - 4, you (team of 4) all finally go oh maybe we should even teams !
Now I don't care wtf is going on with all you but at this rate we will lose all those that we love to play with. I fore one am one of them ! I will not put up with all this BS thats going on ! So from now on, either you switch or I will switch you myself and if you should choose to leave to go back to the other team you will be kicked ! You have been warned !

I have talked to dash about this and have full permission to do this ! So either we bring the fun back to the game or some of you will not be playing at all or worse we could lose some of our best friends ! XO

Hey all,

I use a lot of aliases in CTF. 90 % of the time. Often I find myself bming 1 person a lot of times. Im sorry for that. I dont seem to do as well in my real name than I do with aliases. B) Yes I find the teams un-even a lot, but it is hard to even out the teams in ctf. In most of my games, I find that the games are uneven. It is alot funner with a even game. XD

Thursday, May 05, 2005 at 7:30:00 PM

In order to avoid more discussion...go Tally!

I was present for Lone's above mentioned game. Off hand, I do not remember all the names, but I seem to remember that the switching of any one player would have skewed the results the other way. I don't remember Lone being in there all that long either.

Each of us has been in games where the teams are uneven. Hell, ask Pai...he watched me get swatted one night the teams were so skewed. It happens. On the whole, I think people try to keep it even...sometimes people forget to count the dots (not the names), or just get too into the game.

I for one do not need (or appreciate) the stronghanded approach proposed by Lone. We can police ourselves, ty. There are typically enough admins around to bust out the boot when necessary. I think if we all make a concerted effort it will be fine. Harangues and the like do nothing but upset old Proffy...no one is innocent Lone, including you.

EDIT: Please don't take this the wrong way...just trying to point out we all make mistakes, even those with good intentions.

Hola!

Me not mean to be such a Negative Nancy in my last post.

@ CADC RE: "I just let the team randomizer do the picking for me"

Same here CADC! Me do that too. The only time I have use for the team selector is when the other players are being trounced badly in need of help. I think letting the randomizer choose your fate is the best bet for a fun game.

@ Cat:

You always make for a good game. Love playin' w/ ya.

I'm happy to see the names haha and Oddball again... I haven't seen the name "Oddball" in-game since the time that "z" left and the CTF servers went to hell a while back. I'd like to see is TankGirl and Smokin J back in the CTF mix. I've seen them playing here and there in scrum games not too long ago. That would pretty much complete the circle for me (almost every other vet is playing CTF now.)

I notice since CTF tournament is nearing that the games are getting better and more challenging. It's been great!

@ozzy - Thanks for this insight. Great discussion. Go ahead and "let lose"! You obviously have strong feeling about this subject and me.

Give me a break...

Friday, May 06, 2005 at 5:01:42 AM

Hmmmm good discussion.

What makes teams uneven? Well, besides the obviouse, that one team has more players. I have been on teams that I have thought we could take over the world with. Yet we get our asres handed to us and vice versa. Our I have been on teams that one game we lose the game by like 8 and win the next by 10 :o. Guess when the score gets to 12 to 4 it's uneven?

I try and make things as even as I can. At least with same amount of players on the teams. Yes I do get involved in the game and stop counting the dots. If there is an imbalance please let me know. I like to play good games too.

I think it would be nice if someone could create a script that would automatically balance the teams. So if the server player number went odd, last person in changes to red. I know that not all people like to play red, you could just observe. Then maybe have a team randomizer that after the game the teams swithc players. (not really liking that idea but it would mix things up a bit). Plus an automatic idle or loading tank booter. Having an automatic high ping booter as well, like 180. Hey I have nothing against people with high ping and I'm sure people will take it wrong, ah well, sorry. I just get sick of getting lagged out and having my shots so delayed that they score then I shoot and kill them. Which only happens when I am shooting at someone with high ping. No I know its not fair to all, heck on some nights I would get booted off of Rx's server as well. That being said I know I have the lag shield on and the scrum magnet in effect too. Just some thoughts to make playing a touch more enjoyable.

Friday, May 06, 2005 at 8:26:11 AM

In my experience it's been very rare that vets will intentionally keep the teams in a TS game imbalanced without good reason. Newer players that continually quit and rejoin makes switching teams a real bother. I've not really run into any of said grievances during late night scrum games. I take beatings and laugh and have offered up beatings and, of course, laugh like crazy.

One thing that does irritate me is the complaints of BMing and camping during a TS game. What else would one expect to happen since IMO the skill level of players has seemed to have maxed out? I think there is a lot of strategy involved while Bming and camping during a TS game. I don't know about some of you but I know a lot of us work together to clear the goal of opps by teaming up. Knowing when to kill, severely wound or camp the opps is all part of TS. Again, "the glory days" of TS as some would call it are gone and won't return. Gone are the days of abundant long runs to the goal. Why? The players are a lot better.

I'm sure there are instances where vets abuse their skill level in TS. Personally I've only seen that happen frequently in the toilet of all TT servers, the Lair. I think most if not all the players in late night TS are really good folks. Of course there are a few Midol moments by Prof and Nappy thrown in with the complete psychotic meltdowns of Paisano but that makes it fun. That's a light hearted jab so don't get all uppity. I really do enjoy when people get bitter, it provides for a lot of laughs.

Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to be on my toes.

Invite a retard to a picnic and you'd better expect to get drool in the potato salad.

We all like lone but he occasionally suffers from anal-cranial inversion...

Good post rogue

I always autojoin....evens it up usually.

Even the CHAMPS play against each other sometimes!

There are those like tally, rx, PREY, and hugo who absolutely enjoy me shooting the hell out of them. Those guys always choose to go against me and usually create unbalanced teams. This is then fixed in about 10 seconds by everyone else....thats called being competitive and having fun while keeping it real...a fine example for the rest to follow!!

Nuts!! Yea I agree. Would be much more effective than the autojoin!! -z- has most if not all this implemented in the CTF servers already...BTW the fact you can kill me while im dodging your bullets is my new pet peeve!!....cadc, fatlips, tankor, MOE, and nuts have something that doesnt get along with my system....lol....i think im dodging and nailing them when im really getting killed!! Even though I am retired and touring Florida in my Buick, I had to speak up. I have to be brief though as the early bird starts shortly...also have to get back to my shuffleboard tournament.

I love a great game as well as anyone else. I also get tired of trying to even up teams and finding myself one of the few doing it. Anyone that plays with me should be able to attest that I am usually one of the first to step up and switch sides to even things out. I enjoy the challenge.

I also admit that there have been times where I was playing on a team with folks that I clicked with, and even though the other side was weaker, I stayed put in the hopes that someone would eventually join and even things up.

Anyway - great thread. Great posts here.

Ahhh, back in the USA! Just got home late last nite. I will dust off my server and give it a spit-shine tonight!

I think Nuts hit it right on the head. TS can have lopsided scores that are hard to predict.

Here are my thoughts:
1. If I am adminning I put in a lot of energy and am vigilant about changing up and evening teams. If I am just a regular player I am more inclined to wait it out and just play.
2. It often takes 3-4 games before the right "aura" and perfect even competitive "karma" can be awoken. Trying to force it to happen may or may not help. Most of the time, unless it is very late at night, people will join to even things up.
3. When a player joins a team that is losing and then starts up with "These teams suck" type of talk, I think it is really disrespectful to his teammates! . ::negative karma!:: I think is is far more constructive for an experienced player who is not happy with the teams to say "Hey (insert names of player here), how about you and so and so switch to even it up?" Then at least we have a concrete suggestion that has some thought behind it.
4. Speaking of karma, often times the littlest spark can turn a losing or undermanned team around! The extra energy and focus required to pull off an upset can be a huge unifying factor that can be a total rush! Look for it instead of going into a negative space.
5. I do welcome noobs to my server. They are always welcome. Noobs should read my server guidleines at reagentx.com to see what I am trying to create. If they have a good attitude, then they can learn the rest fast enough.
6. It is all very amusing! Have fun!

-Rx
