With the proliferation of terrain and mission creation it seems to me that we need to come up with a registration system for naming our projects in a way that doesn't conflict with one another. For example, I was told that I shouldn't use "Rn" to name my terrains since Racer445 used the "R". This makes a lot of sense to me. These are the initials that I know of that have been taken.

C = chong
D, DB = Dash
MM = MysteryMan
R = Racer
Roo = Rooster
Rbn = Rabban
T = Triv

I think it would be nice but I'm naming my terrains after what they're called. For example, my Kara Kum desert mod is karakum.ter and karakum.mis. Bryce Canyon is napalmbryce.mis and.ter, and syberia is siberia.mis and.ter.

I understand the orderly aspect of naming conventions, but I don't want to have to use a reference sheet to determine what's what down the road when I have 20 or so mods. If it has a name, I prefer to use it. I find it difficult to determine Dash's or MM terrains because of the number of terrains. DBx doenst mean anything to me when in TGE and I find myself opening many projects before finding the one I need. I also find the same inconveniences when hosting dedicated servers.
I kind of go by the "call it what it is" theory.

That's just me, going across the grain.

Napalm makes a good point. I would prefer to have named my first files hawaii.ter and hawaii.mis (which I did for myself), but since I was following dash's example for distribution, I went with R1 (and TT1_7 so I could load it without starting a dedicated server).

So yeah! If we want to use a name that really describes the terrain, then I think that's the way to go. Currently I'm working on something called, "The Pit" which is a lot more zippy than "Rbn2". However, if folks like dash's way, then we should kinda secure the initials we're going to use.

Another thing, before someone says it, yes I do mod, lots of people have seen my mods....
the reason you havent seen them lately is because my dad is so ******* and everything I do deserves something to be taken away.... Hence..... Adios PC!
so.... I hope to get it back soon but it seems unlikely

@ Rabban (UF) aka Hammer

You can easily rename you mod if you wish. I'm sure you already know this but you can just change the.ter name and then change the refrence to it (using notepad, wordpad, textedit etc.) in the.mis file.

"new TerrainBlock(Terrain) {
rotation = "1 0 0 0";
scale = "1 1 1";
detailTexture = "game/data/missions/terrains/details/detail1";
terrainFile = "game/data/missions/napalmbryce.ter";
squareSize = "8";
tile = "1";
blockShift = "8";
locked = "true";
position = "-1024 -1024 0";"

The positive sides of naming like e.g. Dash
- It’s easy to recognize the author of the maps
- It’s easy to find the maps from missions folder, when all of them are after each others
- The missions folder looks more organized when the maps are in categories.

What’s about negative sides of naming like e.g. Dash?
- You can’t remember so well what map it is?

Solution for this?
- Name the map like this xyz.ter
- X is your letter symbol e.g. D
- Y is your maps name! E.g. MyFirstTerrain
- Z is the number of your map e.g. 2. Wait did I say number? What you need number for, after you have a name? ;-)

You don't have to let go of one rope before grabbing the other. But you'll have to let go of one if you want to swing forward.
