Page : <1> :

I brought this up in response to an unrelated post on garage games back in they, and after having played someone's very decent urban mod attempt, I am once again caught up on how wicked stinking fresh an urban mod could be. Image one of our islands with two scoring areas and two flags, like halo's assault I think, where to score, you have to jam your flag into the other team's "base." That's just one possibility. So much game play, so little time...

Ah, research.

That looks cool!

No matter what, TT2 really needs more maps, and more variety to those maps, such as urban ones like above. The current default maps are getting incredibly boring, so something like this would definitely breathe some new life in to TT. And yeah, I imagine it would open up all kinds of possibilities for new game types too.

Woot om woot. I can already see bolo falling into the river :).

I absouletly luvs de urban maps! A lot of interesting mods have been showing up lately with new items in them. I don't think I've seen that one though. Who's is it?

An urban map would be an incredibly cool addition to TT2!

Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at 2:21:50 PM

OK Tally, yes, your fun little Urban Mod would be "Nice", but if you wanna talk about a map to make you drool, how about if we race around on a map of Neve's body instead!, There are all the elements of a great game map here... Mountains, valleys etc.. We just need a couple of well placed jump pads. (EDIT: sentence removed by TG at the request of an older gentleman in this community who is not amused by my antics.)

Yes, the NeveScrum would be a fine way to spend the evening with friends eh?

Our maps worlds would be Spooky, Frantic, and Luscious.

Buh buh buh...

LEGS!!!

So it seems the idea of real world maps is catching on. XD I think some maps of DC, New York and LA would be cool.

Perhaps instead of loading BT down with the task, a modular plug-in could be added to TT and we could create custom maps ourselves that would work with any TT console. Almost like the expansion packs you get with other games.

In the meantime, I'm be working on my howitzer...model.

Gives a whole new meaning to Skinning! Phew...

How about this "skin"... The American Pie Band Camp girl

I can't find the scrum though... Hmmm... Where can it be?

I am feeling slightly non-amused by all of this, which is odd. Keep it in your pants tg.

Im still wondering how 187 does those urban maps with schematics of other games? Perhaps replacing the DTS map files for the 1s of another computer game (just my thought)

Hmm, seems I need to get back to school. ;)

So someone is already modding TT to create urban maps? I'll be on the lookout.

For sooo many reasons, this is quickly becoming my favorite post....

Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 11:37:35 AM

Oooookkkk, Well, anyways, I think that you should have a team co-op adventure mode with real cities like, uuuummmmmm...... Ooh! Busy London in Rush Hour! Then there would be cars, like the concept car on the road, and there would be tanks trying to attack or something like that.!?!!!

@Wal and everyone else who has been gaping at the photos: I'm scared now, some one make a different post or all the bodies!

Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 12:31:35 PM

Wouldn't that add a new element! Moving obstacles! I love the idea of urban maps...or what about 'Arena Tank-Cross' sort of like Motocross, but with tanks. Along the lines of Jinx and Bydand (sp?) and thier 'racing mod' but with jumps and tight turns and the normal physics of TT. A lapcounter instead of a time counter...i have no coding knowledge so I will have to leave the execution to motivated individuals with tech knowledge. I could be Graphics Advisor.

While I can appreciate the fine female form in all it's glory, I wonder if we could keep provocative images to a minimum.

@Rabban...I don't get it. All your posts are about Jesus or about sex...not quite sure how they mesh. Jesus was not against sex...but he did have certain constraints. Thanks for being real, though, Rabban.

Pro*vo"ca*tive, a. [L. Provocativus: cf. OF. Provocatif.] Serving or tending to provoke, excite, exciting.

Agreed, we don't want to do anything that provokes excitement!

While I am the first to admit that the American Pie girl image is two rungs down the ladder from being soft porn.... The picture of Neve is just a Classic Portrait complete with the "kind of legs you wanna suck on for a while"... Er..... Sorry.

Funny how big guns and scantily-clad ladies keep coming together! WWII Aircraft nose-art. Pin-ups inside the turrets of tanks. ThinkTank forums. :P

I would just like to see TT2 incorporate actual 3D skinning of the field. In other words, you could make tunnels, bridges, ramps, etc. Picture a mod of a giant 3-level warehouse with pits and ramps between the floors. Kind of like Chutes and Ladders on BattleMode. Since every game can only last 20 minutes, it would be cool to have modifiable/destructible terrain. Things like a swinging door, moving platforms, or walls that a heavy tank could blast holes through in order to cut-off a light tank. Having surfaces with varying levels of traction would be cool too (ice around the goals!).

I think the physics, controls, and models of the tanks are already great. But the terrain is far behind the times compared to current games. I'd be happy to play ThinkTanks in the Halo worlds.

And yes, that Urban Mod would be extraordinarily sweetalmost as sweet as the thighs of our favorite flutist!

How's this? We drive up the hill to the office building and use the Teleporter/Reload station to transport ourselves...

...across the glistening lake and next to the building held aloft by Lip Rocks?

...or we could just linger atop the majestic mountains and admire the view of the valley below.

Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 6:27:07 PM

@ KBC ummm... Uhhh.... Hmmmmm....

Hey how about a synthesis of two great games, TT and frogger?

Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 8:58:10 PM

I think urban levels would be rather cool. BUT... The problems I can see are trying to create an urban environment that maintains the comic/cartoony feel that surrounds the game and story now. A truly realistic city or a real world city (eg. New York) would not fit well with a tank with a giant cartoon brain on top... Two different realities. IMO, a city designed in the scheme of the ufo's or even the bot heads is the way it would have to go. A cartoon city with a cartoon feel.

Now I have to admit that I really don't know the story of the brains and bots that live in TT land, but one would definitely have to take that in to account when creating an urban landscape. What do the brains do, where do they live, work. Are they just brains or did they have bodies as well. If they are just brains and they all rely on machines for their mobility then that right there tells you the basis for which your buildings would have to be designed. Doors and stairs may be types of things they would have no need for. Or how about if it is a city controlled by the bots... What would that be like.

With all that said I think urban warfare would be a very nice addition to the TT world. I think it could add more enjoyment to solo games as well if the story were compelling enough. Imagine having to eliminate all intruding bots from Serotonin-opolis, or having to defend an invasion in the sleepy town of Tryptophan-ville... Still just simple BM matches, but the story makes it a little more exciting.

PS. Mmmmmm, Neve!

Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 9:18:21 PM

Story, shmory. Aliens sucked out our brains and stuck em into a bunch of tanks. Now we spend the days fighting for a bouncing flag on an alien planet. The end.

This isn't an RPG. I don't care if we are raisins driving driving dune-buggies down the streets of New York during armageddon, I just want insane game-play! Give me my 3-dimensional, moving terrain with teleports, bridges, varying traction, and tunnels! I want to see tanks get friggin LOST as they try to make their way to the Goal. I don't want to add to the complexity of tank controls (primary/secondary weapons, throw scrum, etc) as that would make the game more difficult for newbies to get into. But, I DO want a land that isn't so darn easy to memorize and exploit. This is one of the reasons why I like Slugland so much. The fog-of-war and expansive terrain makes for new challenges (a straight-line to the goal is rarely possible).

Ah well, we'll see what comes out. I still love Frantic, but its getting hard to get excited about a game in Lush or Spooky. It is people like Sluggy, KBC, and -z- that are keeping this game alive.

Tal,

You're right, I don't play single player. Never had much interest in it. But that is my point. From a marketing stand point if you can make the solo game more interesting for those who would rather not or cannot play online (or for young kids of protective parents) you could potentially gain more of an audience and future buyers for new releases.

As far as what I was saying about the story and the cartoony look... Add something that doesn't fit right and it will change the entire feel (for better or worse). It is basic design... One misplaced element can make a final piece that belongs no where else but in the garbage.

I am not disaggreeing with the fact that Urban levels would be A LOT of fun... But only if it is done right. All of us who have been around for a while probably would overlook small items that don't make sense. But new players (which is always the target) might. TT is a great, solid game (with a few flaws.. Oops different thread) and everything in it up to this point follows a certain theme. If you have a cartoon-ish game, everything should fit into a similar scheme. Primary/secondary weapons, ultra realistic cities that look like as though could exist in the real world, complicated gameplay, and anything overly 'fancy' IMO would stick out like a sore thumb and detract from an all ready excellent style similar to none I've ever seen.

JB,

From an artistic stand point (I have no idea about the technical side) you COULD have all your transporters, bridges, tunnels, etc and still have it fit nicely into the comic-like theme. It's when you have a photo realistic environment that things begin to look and feel weird. For example... I designed some amazing skins for my lush maps. When loaded there are tank tracks running up and down the hills, muddy swamps, and rocky bluffs. And my tank skins were rusted, mud splattered and very weathered. The sky is pictures of the real sky pieced together. It is very realistic and nice looking and all together looks like it could be a real place somewhere here on Earth.... But they just don't feel right for the game. None of my realistic skins have felt right. My enjoyment of the game drops considerably because I am in a real world environment instead of the cartoon environment that is intended for this game. Major props to the artists at BT for creating the detailed AND cartoony worlds in TT.

Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 11:11:58 PM

It doesn't have to be photorealistic. I'm really talking more about the addition of a "designed" environment, not one so "naturalistic."

Maybe our brains and tanks and such escape the arena and take the fight to the aliens, matrix style ish. Or any style ish.

OM

Yeah Monkee, I agree 100%. I wouldn't want to see any realistic looking environs put into TT2 either. The cartoonish and somewhat simplistic feel of this game is part of it's charm, part of it's appeal. It's what makes it unique against everything else out there. That's why I've always disagreed with those who have clamored for the addition of realistic weapons in TT, like missile launchers, plasma guns and so forth. It doesn't need nor want to compete with FPS or RPG games like Halo and such. Totally different genre there.

For urban mods, it would be cool to see some wacky cities, with buildings that defy gravity, roadways that soar above the ground, things like that. Some of JB's ideas I like too. Something futuristic, but almost Jetsons' like in it's cartoonish-ness. Much larger environs would also be welcome, but there's a fine line there. You can't make it too big or playing things like scrum become more of a "chase the dot on the radar" kind of game, where you're incredibly lucky if you even score. Still, the current maps, especially the Spooky ones, are too small in my opinion.

Anyway, I know I just reiterated what most of you said, but I thought I'd thrown my vote in for good measure. Good ideas and posts all around!

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 12:54:32 AM

I think there's a distinction to be made here between style and substance. We all want to maintain the same graphic appearance, but I doubt many are interested the gameplay shenanigans - physics and weapons - we see in nearly all the mods. The maps right now are a good size for what the game is. Floating buildings don't make sense and break TT physics. I never want to play mario brothers again, jump-padding around, or getting pissed while trying to.

...i'm just talking about structures here people.

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 2:14:44 AM

One of the things I really like about this game is the artistic side of it. Everything is a well thought out design, and not a last minute addition from the marketing department. "Quick! Throw in some tunnels & bridges! The kids love em!!"

If they wanted to add an urban setting, I'm sure that BraveTree would be able to pull it all together in a way that will keep the look and feel consistent. After all, these guys are professionals. Fighting to keep that image of PokeMalo in a tiny little money hat out of my mind.

I'm sure they wouldn't do anything goofy.

Friday, June 18, 2004 at 2:18:58 AM

I dont know...i think I like the idea of scaling a building with my tank, taking a jump pad over to the top of another building, shooting down ho's camping ass, and scoring...i think it will be cool....my favorite maps in scrum are the ones where the goal locations have tricks that can be used to score...

Keep the physics and weapons, etc...just replace the grass with street and the trees with buildings...i think it would be a blast...

I like the game the way it is. I just think that with more tanks and more maps would = more fun

@DD - All my posts are about Jesus or about sex??? WHAT?? (and this from the player named after the hottie on The Dukes of Hazzard ). So...I like Jesus and I like sex. Since I'm married, I can have both. XD Besides, is there somewhere I've been off color?

@KBC - Nice skin! You're such a patriot.

It might be cool if we could use objects within the game to trash opponents. Say, if I shoot this building enough it will topple over and smash someone into the ground. OK, maybe not so practical...but it would be fun to watch. :)

Still trying to figure out what ketchup has in common with sex and/or Jesus

Yeah, sorta like War of the Monsters! And, if someone is going to make a racing mod, make it like Mario Kart! Why I say this is because it should be racing with power-ups, etc., and not a killing spree! It'd also be nice to be able to snipe on top of the buildings with some secret entrances and stuff. Hovering cars and passers-by to frag would also be nice. Ooh, oooh, GTA: Vice City flashback! ;)

Well, the aiens made enviornments like earth, so in the next one they should have real-world enviornments that look cartoony but you could recognise them.

Wohoo!!! Took awhile, but I finnaly got it!! Mountain Scrum!!

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 4:13:49 PM

Mountain one looks cool... With the others I am sensing skirt-gliching ;)

TT2 would be awesome... We definitely need more urban maps, something with a bit more military implications.

It would be cool if they could add something in like a heart for another type of tank, or like a helicopter or something as the bots.

KBC, those are some sweet screenies! One thing for sure, I'm going to need bigger shells or loads of area effect power-ups to hit anything at those distances.

So, can we hide in the lake and pop out with guns a blazin'???

Monday, June 21, 2004 at 5:20:45 PM

@adapt; Bummer. Guess driving around on TG's not going to make it into TT2. :S

...and I was really looking forward to a few of those maps! XD

@Rabban; Yep, you can hide in the lake. In fact, there's a couple of goals down in the depths. Break out your radar, sonar, and fishing pole!

@ALL; It's around 1/2 hour or longer to get in the first time, but after you have the files, you can enter it normally. Here's how to get in a LOT quicker.
