I really have no patience with the poor crybaby Hollywood producer/director bunch. I wasn't going to see that movie, but now I have yet another reason not to. Taking cheap shots at West Virginia is so tired. Maybe he could actually discuss why people might ban it instead of whining...
Didn't John Denver warn us about West Virginia? :)
Lynchin' heaven, west virginia
Brokeback Mountain
means lynchin's by the river -
Life is cheap there
Cheaper than the trees
Cheaper than the mountains
Lynchin is a breeze
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads
I hate it when people make sweeping generalizations like that. Especially Canadians, they do stuff like that all the time.
Hey Rabbban, I know exactly how you feel about stereotypes.
I cant believe that hollywood would make a movie about gay cowboys. Ultimate insult to red staters. That's what they get for winning the election I guess.
Monica, Good point about West Virginia. What other state used to be part of Virginia? The Commonwealth of Kentucky!! So, in a way I'm in with Rabban. Ledger, take your six bits and shove up your A#$!!
@ Rabban
West Virginia's ugly and it's mother dresses it funny.
So THERE.
@HillBilly

If you can get your foot out of your mouth, I'd love to know why you deem it the "ultimate insult".

Foot not in mouth. I think liberal Hollywood is taking aim at wholesome American values (such as cowboys) and making them into gays. Simple as that. I could sugar coat it if you want me to, would that help you understand? How many gay cowboys you know? ( do NOT include lesbians).
Now, get it straight here (no pun intended) I have no problems with gays. I know quite a few and there are no problems. I just find it kind of rediculous that's all.
Heyas
Now I think Heath Ledger's comment about lynching is totally stupid and he is a complete idiot for saying such crap.
However from what I have read here - this movie is based on a true story about "two gay cowboys".
This might be wrong ! Let us know if you have heard otherwise? How much it is based on a true story I dont know.
@56K man - Heath is actually Australian..... But if canada want to claim him thats fine with me.
Squidders
Australians and West Virginians...
Hmmm...
Australians, Canadians and West Virginians...
They are all a bunch of generalizing Hollywood lefties, every last one of them. Especially that Rabban fellow.
So an Australian, a Canadian, and West Virginian walk into a bar....
Gay cowboys??? Preposterous I say!!! An outrage sir!!!
In my opinion, there's almost nothing MORE GAY than a cowboy.
Banning movies because of... Who is in love
interview from the Sydney Herald
Heath Ledger angry at ban
Ledger said he was not surprised a Utah cinema had banned Brokeback Mountain, which depicts a lifelong love affair between two Montana cowboys.
I heard a while ago that West Virginia was going to ban it. But thats a state that was lynching people only 25 years ago, so thats to be expected, Ledger said.
Personally, I dont think the movie is (controversial) but I think maybe the Mormons in Utah do. I think its hilarious and very immature of a society.
True story... Apparently not
"Brokeback Mountain"
a short story by Annie Proulx and an interview
with Annie Proulx about "Brokeback Mountain"
Now...
The first federal anti-lynching law was not passed until 1968, when lynching was specifically criminalized by federal legislation by the Civil Rights Act. That was only 38 years ago.
Heath, in the moment of "anger" may not have been thinking of exact dates (25 years or 35 years ago). He is wrong to generalize all southern states, but you must consider that he is not an American and may not see the subtle differences between states that lynched a few dozen blacks versus a few hundred or how recently their racism and bigotry was umm... Dispelled?
BTW Bigotry includes racism and homophobia.
Lynchings: By State and Race, 1882-1968
The movie is not about two gay cowboys. The movie is about two people in love who are unfortunately cowboys.
Even if a cowboy you knew were gay you would not know it. If you saw the movie, you would know that even if a man is gay nobody but him may know it, as is with many gay people, that's the point of the movie.
The pain and frustration of constrained love forced upon you by cultural stereotypes.
In this case, being an American male working on a ranch in the midwest.
But in other cases it was the white women and the black man falling in love, the princess and the pauper, or Romeo and Juliet.
I don't understand what is wrong with people sometimes.
I almost think they are afraid of seeing things on this subject matter because it will arouse thoughts that they find disturbing.
Heath Ledger making you boys squirm a little, heart beating a little too fast.
MAX
Well then, please note that we're (WV) pretty much an equal opportunity lynching state with 20 whites and 28 blacks lynched (compared to Mississippi's 42 to 539 ratio). XD
But that wasn't really my point. IF Heath is truely interested in fighting bigotry and stereotypes, then he needs to apply that philosophy to every group and not just his pet project.
And is it unfortuate that they're cowboys or that they're gay? From the previews I get the idea that the dudes are involved with women as well, but that they started getting a little frisky on their fishing trips and fell in love. I remember one of the quotes, something about wishing he could "quit" the other guy. Not that I really think he wants to, just that its all part of the drama of the situation, wanting to fit in, yet wanting to express his love for the other guy while not hurting the women in their lives. Heck, maybe I'll go see it after all, just for the boob scene. ;)
So what? I masturbate to pictures of the marlboro man...who among you doesn't? Be honest....well ok, most of the time my eyes wander down to the horse...
Think about it: cowboys share bunkhouses, wear tight jeans and have moustaches. They doze off staring at the stars together and ride bareback....c'mon! Bareback? Google that sometime and tell me there's someone more gay than a cowboy.
And really, almost every cowboy movie is about their gayness on some level or another. Think about it: how many women make it into these films? Answer: one. And that's the broad they throw in for the token straight guy. Really these films are about the strong bond BETWEEN MEN. Bare Back Mountain is just the first cowboy movie to nut up and state unabashedly, WE ARE COWBOYS, AND WE ARE GAY! And its about time. I look forward to the sequels "Tea-bagging at Reach Around Gulch" and "Fistful of Man-bag."
Popcorn?

Oh, I almost forgot: they're remaking one of my favorite eastwood films, "The Good, The Band, and the F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S."
^ LOL
Didn't they make that one a few years back?
@ MAX- that goes to 1968. Much more than the 25 years ago window Ledger mentioned

Think it will probably flop, number of guys that go will be very low. Probably do well with the girls ( 2 sensitive men in one movie!).
I'll stay home and watch the good, the bad, and the ugly. Now if they were to make a spinoff about 2 cowgirls...
STINKY..... HI!
And Rabban I thought you lived in East Virginia
T raider
Not that I really think he wants to, just that its all part of the drama of the situation, wanting to fit in, yet wanting to express his love for the other guy while not hurting the women in their lives.
Anyone else see a really weird correlation between this thread and the Tankman was a person thread?

OK if all cowboys are gay then all male hair stylists are strapping, studly lady killers!!! XD
So what? I masturbate to pictures of the marlboro man...who among you doesn't? Be honest....well ok, most of the time my eyes wander down to the horse...
^Woke wifey I laughed so loud.
Apologies for the bump...I'm trying to get caught up in here.

Heath Ledger angry at ban
So Heath is upset that some cinemas are refusing to show his movie, Brokeback Mountain . Fine, but then he lobs this zinger.
"I heard a while ago that West Virginia was going to ban it. But that's a state that was lynching people only 25 years ago, so that's to be expected," Ledger said.
First off, he "heard" that West Virginia was going to ban it. I seriously doubt it. Sure, there may be theaters who refuse to show it, but then that's their decision, based on how they feel their market will respond to the movie. Personally, I've heard no such thing, but then he's a movie star so it must be true.
Second, then he says we were lynching people 25 years ago. 25??? Let's see, that's 1981, so I would have been 13 or 14 yrs old and I don' t recall any such thing in the news. I did a Google search as well and I couldn't come up with anything there either. The sad thing is, people hear this joker, nod their heads in agreement and don't even bother to question him when he makes a cultural slur.
Third, he seems to equate lynching with banning his movie. Hopefully I'm not the only one insulted by this, especially when I'd say he's only concerned with the royalties he won't be receiving from a few, small WV theaters.
Guess I'm doubly not going to see it now, so he can kiss my 6 bits bye bye (that'll show him).
