What is the best way to solve this? Just keep refreshing until doomsday, quit the game and restart, quit & reboot your computer, sacrifice a goat, what?

Any suggestions?

Yes, this is a real problem and someone should let Joe know about this.

This morning, OM was hosting a server that Lancer and ROGUE could see, but Bolo and LC50 could not. I checked the gnometech server monitor, and the server was up. Both Bolo and I refreshed about 20 times each, restarted TT, etc., but could not make OM's server reappear.

I have had this problem a few times before, but it usually subsides after 4-6 refreshes.

When OM ran a "create-a-server" (not dedicated), his server appeared to me (after a few refreshes) but not to Bolo.

I then ran a dedicated server, which could be seen by all but Bolo.

Bolo ran a server, but I don't think anyone could see it. It wasn't on gnometech, but there were a few servers that were listed as "timed out". This is weird because I know I joined one of Bolo's servers during the 3 on 3 scrum tourney a few months ago.

What is the PROBLEM here? This is soooo frustrating!!!!

I had a curious problem the other night after the league games. I stuck around for a few games after the league match had finished, and when I left, I could see no servers - no matter how many times I refreshed. Stayed that way for over an hour, but they were all showing up on the Gnome list. I tried everything including rebooting but all to no avail.

I have this problem in psycho all the time...its a gamble whether I can see our match server...unless it is prey or aza I usually have to refresh, restart TT, and have them restart their server b4 I can see it...this has happened with reagant x's server, om's server, and others I can remember...also when I look at a server list right b4 a psycho match I see maybe 2 or 3 psycho servers...never see them alll...this is really frustrating...JB once told me to clear my TT cache by restarting TT...that doesnt always work. The gnometech server monitor isnt always in agreement with the TT game server list...i dont know what it could be unless somehow these servers have a ping that is sooooo high I cant see them...i have cable internet so I dont know what gives....

Yeah, I'm not sure what gives with this, but it seems it's becoming increasingly unreliable as to whether or not all players can see a hosted server or not. I don't recall having such a sever hosting problem as what I had on Saturday when LC50 and Bolo could not find mine.

Funny thing is, if no players could see it, I could understand that. But Lancer and ROGUE popped in no problem. Why were LC50 and Bolo not able to see it? We really need to get this looked into. If it continues to get any worse, we may start to have issues with league games (i.e. Players not able to show up)

There also doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. It's not like, all Mac users could see my server, but PC users couldn't, or only EST could see it, etc. It's very random. Does anyone out there have a clue why this is happening?

I emailed Joe about this, and unfortunately this is possibly a internet speed/bandwidth problem. Most likely, a fix will need to come from the Bravetree end, unless we all go buy more bandwidth.

Seems like the reason this is happening is because, this is how it works.

The master server collects all the games, and when a client connects, the master gives each client the list of games which the client then tries to connect to.

Seems like just a simple timeout issue. The client knows where the server is (master has told it where) but when it goes to find it, it gets no response (or the response is slow) so it times out and does not show up in the server list.

Not much that can be done, as it is all about connections and internet bandwidth.. And 1.2 won't be addressing the speed of the internet issue. ;)

We could increase the timeout threshold, and this might help.. Yet another thing to add to the update list.

Make sense?

Joe

Joe also suggested monkeying with the "$pref::Net:" values (in pref.cs file of the the TTgameclient folder):

These are the defaults:

$Pref::Net::LagThreshold = "400";

$pref::Net::PacketRateToClient = "10";

$pref::Net::PacketRateToServer = "32";

$pref::Net::PacketSize = "200";

Any suggestions from the peanut gallery on modifying those values?

Maybe Bolo could get toghether with OM or myself and we could tinker around to see if Bolo's situation improves.

So I increase the lag threshold??? Is it in miliseconds....guys what should I change them too (I can experiment but why if u guys already have...) :)

Thanks,

Monday, March 29, 2004 at 8:54:47 PM

Maybe 800?

Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 4:36:23 PM

Duuuuuuuuuuude I changed it to 900 and have had NO problems since.....dont know maybe its a coincidence

Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 11:10:25 PM

I changed my LagThreshold to 0, I get almost every server up.

Note (from that site)

Tweaking may fix

Slow download speeds

Download slower than upload speed

Skipping in TCP streaming video/audio

Blank web pages

Connection issues to some sites

Tweaking will not fix

Packet loss

Multiplayer games over UDP

Your ping time

Regular PC freezes

Inherited hair loss

Don't rely upon that site. I check out just fine but still have lag issues.

I dont think any of this helped....i still cant see all the servers....the other day we all left a big indie game to goto the frantic slug...no matter what I did I couldnt see the server...and to this day I am unable to see LC's server...seems like lately there is hardly anyone on...i think everyone is on crowded servers I cant see....i dont get it...any other thoughts....it is a pain in the ass to check the gnometech site just to see if people are hiding somewhere.....between this and lag I dont know what is worse lately....

As I said before:

This is how I think the main TT server works (da big daddy server that connects all da weany servers that you play on)

When TT searches, the main server asks all of its internet ports whether its hosting a game

Usually, a weany server will say "Game running: stats: Freudian Flats..."

The main server will wait a few seconds then send the info to the player

BUT SOMETIMES, a weany server will take to long to say "Game running" (ping is too large) so they will miss the outgoing signal to the player and this player won't notice that theres a "hidden/ghost game" running

Saturday, May 01, 2004 at 10:48:10 PM

There are many times when hardly anybody or even nobody is on the servers and I still cannot see them. With enough restarting and refreshing eventually I can USUALLY see them...PAIN

To bolo:

The bots still seem to "play the game" even if there are no players in the game.

You think the bots aren't playing becuase the server resets the scores and makes the bots reappear

Since the bots are still playing the game, they will take up cpu thinking time (ping will increase)

I think thats right :[ :[ :( 8o 8( :S

Ask Z or the game designers

Sunday, May 02, 2004 at 3:22:50 PM

No, the bots are non-existent when a real player is not in the server.

Sunday, May 02, 2004 at 3:38:50 PM

This totally sucks....everyone went to the baaaarnyard and I cant see the server....for some reason I can see lepords' ptt, shockwave, homelan ALL the time. Any other server there is a 50/50 chance...talley mentioned he couldnt find it either...

I have heard from at least 5 people that this happens from time to time..

Is bravetree going to address this issue in 1.2?

Any other ideas besides refreshing, restarting TT, restarting pc, restarting router??

I figured out that those prefs.cs client stuff above affect the lag icon in game and not the server list

This is infuriating...

Anyone had the game lock windows up?? Just playing some frantic slug when I locked up....game crashed....system crashed....restarted system.....had to restart router...renew ip.....back to TT....server is there but I cant see it

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh DAM this game

You just get probalem after problem dont you Bolo?

Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at 7:14:58 PM

Man, sounds like it's time to drop that machine out a window and start over from scratch.

Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at 7:20:06 PM

Well....i got 2 machines hooked up to a router...my old machine gets 2.6mb down and 100k up. My good machine gets 100down and 100up...tried bypassing router, etc...must need to reload the OS on my good machine...wont have time 4 awhile...hopefully that will solve the lag and server seeing problems....

Side note:

One of the most frustrating things in TT for me is to know that a server is up (via ptt or gnometech) and not be able to see it.

For a while I thought it was just some sorta glitch because nothing would fix the problem.

I have solved my particular problem and maybe it might help someone else.

If I can see every server but the one I want to join all I do is turn off zonealarm (substitute your personal firewall here maybe)

THEN I can see the server...

Join it

Then turn zonealarm back on....then everything's fine

99% of the time I can see servers fine without doing anything.............

I have absolutely no idea why this problem exists...i have done numerous tests with ping, packet transfer, etc and everything seems the same whether I have zonealarm on or not
