Some of you may know that my maternal grandfather passed away last week, some may not.

Last Saturday he slipped into a light coma. He could hear and understand what was said to him, but was unable to articulate a response (though he tried). After some personal debate, I decided to drive down to see him Monday and I'm so glad I did. Within 20 minutes of my arrival at his home, he passed away.

A few of us there gathered around him. While my mother stoked his hair, I put one hand on his thigh and another on his forearm. Two cousins stood close by while an aunt and friend were in the kitchen. We all tried to comfort him and encourage him to pass on. As many of you know, I believe he had heaven to gain and a reunion with those who went before him. We shared our hearts and tears with him, then with one another. It was a touching time.

I was so blessed to be there. I had never been part of someone's passing into eternity and while some may believe it is something to be avoided, it was very bitter-sweet and good for me as a person. I'm sure papaw appreciated it as well and I like to think he was holding on for me. It was great to be there. It was a wonderful, sad, joyful and tragic occasion.

I was sorry to hear about your grandfather's passing Rabban. Though I am glad you were able to be there with him during his final moments. It would have been something you regretted for some time if you weren't there.

Though I don't subscribe to religion myself, I can understand how appreciative you must have felt to have faith in your life during that time. It was certainly a time to draw on that faith. Your grandpas now in a better place than this earth.
