Forums Index >> General >> Annual TT Awards: The Brainies

Page : <1> :

I liked a post I read on the GG forum about rating players, but I think it would be even more fun to have an annual awards show where we all vote online for the best players in several categories. We can call them the Brainy Awards (Brainies) where the winners win a trophy (virtual anyway) of a brain on a stick.

Sample categories would include:

Rookie of the year (which new player came on the scene and everyone took notice)

Comeback player of the year (which old timer returned to form after a period of lackluster performances)

Nicest player of the year (who was the most pleasant to play with/against)

Meanest Player (who seemed the most ornery of all?)

Best Solo Scrum Player of the year

Best Team Scrum Player of the year

Best Solo BattleMode player of the year

Best Team BattleMode player of the year

Best overall player of the year

Best single performance of the year (scrum or BM)

Best MOD of the year (Official and home-made)

Best Bot of the year?

Best Thinkthanks website of the year

Best new feature of the year

What do you all think?

Sounds like fun

Cool!

I wonder who would manage these polls? Perhaps the webmaster of this board?

The question then becomes when do we conduct these polls (December 1 thru 31)?

The problem with that is that it would favor the players who are the hottest at that time, rather than let's say players who hit their peak earlier in the year (sort of the same dilemma that exists with the Academy Awards where Pictures released too early in the year do not stay fresh enough in the minds of the voting members as do those that get released late in the year).

Still, I like the idea of having it at the end of every year. We could set it up so that nominees can be made all throughout the year and those totals will dictate who gets listed as official nominees. However, there should be a way to nominate players with a special write-in vote to ensure that newcomers get a fair chance at the awards too. It would safe-guard those situations where a great player starts playing in October and doesn't have enough time to accumulate nomination votes.

We could keep the nomination polls on this website if it's acceptable to the person in charge.

Can we get Billy Crystal Tank to MC... He's a crack up!

Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 1:16:58 PM

Lol

Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 1:24:40 PM

How about the UMAOPRAH Tank?

Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 1:53:54 PM

Keep the polls short and fun. Too many categories mean few will enter. Best Scrum and Best BM players are really hard to judge, and I'd rather just leave out. However, the fun ones, like funniest player, nicest player, chest-beating player, most drunken player, gabby player, etc are always fun.

I think JB's got it right. Categories like Best BM and Scrum player may ignite some wars and bruised egos. But funnier, lighter stuff like he mentions will be easy to do. Also, there needs to be a voting system done in a way to prevent players from voting for themselves. I can see some people doing that, just for some notoriety.

So yes, I think it needs to include as many fun categories as possible...

Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 11:13:45 PM

This sounds cool. I'm not going to nominate anyone til there's a real form, but I will make a suggestion.

One year is way too long. Especially if this is just joky stuff. No way we actually need to wait a whole year to do this, it's just going to get forgotten. I think it could work with at least four times a year. Once a month is the way I would go.

Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 11:35:00 PM

Thanks for props, Cadc. I try to put a little thought into any post. I try to learn things from them too. You guys/gals have shared a lot of great stuff...funny and informative stuff. Explains a lot about the game when you learn about the personalities behind the tanks.

For example, when Bolo voted for Hoosane as best shooter, that explained why Hoosane reacted so extremely angry with me recently when I smoked him several times in a row in Repent's excellent Mod. I didn't know at the time that he was such a great marksman, so that is probably why he spewed forth an endless series of profanity and bile that I will not repeat on this board. :)

As for best cliff hanger, I've not been around long, but no one has impressed me more than Chaos for sheer fearlessness around the cliffs!

He must have a special Stick 'em code or something! He never falls off and no one can get him!!!

I totally agree with Asterisk too. An annual award is way too long...especially for gamers like us who have the attention spans of gibbons!

So I second his motion to make it an monthly award! It would sort of be like that lame Employee of the Month award. No?

Paisano

P.s. JameBomb great games tonight... Katherine too

I'd be glad to maintain the online polls and results if no one else wants to do it.

I would use polls that would prevent anyone from voting more than once (it checks your IP address to verify this).

Here is a sample poll... http://pub.alxnet.com/poll?id=2418062

Obviously, it would not prevent anyone from voting for themselves, but they could only do it once.

We would reset all of the polls on the first of every month and start fresh from there.

At the end of the year, we could tally all the votes from the previous 12 months and crown an annual champion for each category.

It wouldn't be that tough and wouldn't take much time once it is all setup. Contact me, -z- if you are interested in doing this.

I'd be glad to assist you with it if the gang wanted it, of course.

The main purpose of this should be for fun and entertainment. There are no cash prizes, so no need for anyone to get upset about any of it.

LoL, bring this thread back to life!

We shoudl really think about doing this.. *sigh*

Monday, April 12, 2004 at 1:58:14 PM

Just when you thought this thread was dead!

I still love the concept of voting for our favorite categories as long as they are kept light-hearted and fun.

Voting for the Best Players in Scrum or Battlemode is impossible because it would merely turn into a popularity contest.

I've changed my mind about voting for those kinds of things because the veterans have shown me how everything works in the TT community.

It is indeed like high school with cliques and circles....sort of like the Breakfast club...with geeks, jocks, freaks, etc. Etc.

Ever want to witness this yourself? Go to a survivor game and just try to shoot a SEAL! No matter what the color, members of that cult...er...I mean group or tribe....will jump on you faster than Tally Ho can swipe yet another goal away from a demo or noob! It's rather quite disturbing how obssessed and devoted these players are to their "team". Personally, I am only loyal to the team I am playing for at the moment. The moment our colors change, then so do my loyalties!

So, I propose we generate a list of fun categories to vote for and then watch what happens. I'll put together a list of the ones that some of you have already come up with.

Thanks

Paisano

Monday, April 12, 2004 at 3:37:00 PM

Yah, Seals in Survivor are a pain. Cliff-dwelling, rule-ignoring,... The list goes on and on. I just work on racking up more points than they can get by their boring tactics.

Monday, April 12, 2004 at 3:50:24 PM

I once had a guy (on my team) blast me cause I killed his friend (on the opposing team) during team battlemode. Sheesh.

I have a word for all those folk: Twit. It's a very expressive word, and can be used in a multitude of situations. And it doesn't even have to be censored. XD
