I have a confession to make. I am a freeware junkie! I love computer software, especially freeware!
Obviosuly, I don't like adware/spyware which has recently crept its way into many so-called "freeware" programs.
I am careful about what software I install on my main computers at work and home. I always install them on a test system I use first. It's not only a hobby but part of my regular job as an IT Manager. I dig research and development.

Here are some of the best freeware sites that do a great job of screening their programs to make sure they are pure freeware without adware or spyware. There are tons of sites but these are the best...

NoNags
Freewarehome
Snapfiles

What are your favorite freeware sites and freeware programs that you use?

I shared one of my favorites in another thread... The CutePDF writer that creates PDF files for free from any application.

Another new one I like is EvilLyrics that downloads lyrics to mp3's while you're listening to them!!! A free add-on called EvilTagger will actually copy those lyrics into your mp3 file for you. Works with tons of music players such as winamp, musicmatch, windows media player, etc. Here is a screenshot

MovieTrack tracks movies you own or want to own or watch. It automatically downloads everything about the movie from the Internet Movie Database website !!!

I'm not in the mood to make these link so you will just have to google them.

For OSX mostly:

TinkerTool 3.6 (Unlocks and makes several hidden option available for OSX)
Fetch Art (Works with iTunes, downloads CD art)
Radio Lover Recorder (Records iTunes radio streams and saves them to your HD with song name, artist, album labels.
iPodTrans 0.5 (Download music from your iPod back to a computer)
GioFX (Awsome screen savers and stuff. If you like emitters this will make your jaw drop)

MacTheRipper (Rips DVDs for backup "wink")
ffmpegX0.0.9t (translates video formats. Especially VIDEO_TS to AVI for extended rentals)
MplayerX OS X 2 (Player for DVD and other video types. Records Real Player streams)

Long term sharware:
MenuCalendarClock iCal (puts a very helpful icon in the menu bar that shows the day of the month. A calendar pops up when you click on it and shows you ical info)
iPodRip (Download music from your iPod back to a computer)

Most of this stuff came from these two sites

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/

My favorite freebie isn't really free, it's shareware, but you can use it for a LOOOOOONG time.

It's GraphicConverter. I've used it for ten years or so. http://www.lemkesoft.com

It lets you convert files between many different graphic formats, and also allows some basic editing features. I think it's worth $30 easy. It may be similar to Delta's post.

^ ahhhh... Graphic Converter. Not quite as good, but for Windows InfranView is a useful free image viewer.

For design purposes I find ColorCop and Calipers.exe (an on screen ruler) to be indispensable.

http://tinyapps.org is a good resource.

Escape velocity... Not really freee, as it is a demo and you can only goso far, but you can play it for ever. Ev nove too, but soon capn rick starts to killeth ye

Strangely, Tux Racer came with my Mac. I think Steve Jobs has a thing for penguins (no, really...).

@all you EV Nova freaks out there, if you've gone past the 30 day shareware limit, theres the Pilot File Trade Network on EV Nova.net . I prefer the Pirate Hunter II, a very nice ship that happens to be invincible to all attacks XD. If you surf the pilot files long enough you can find lots of good ships!

I also like the site Mac Game Files.com , a very good site for the latest in Mac shareware, demos, and freeware. I've gotten numerous items off of this site, including my C&C Generals, Halo, and EV games.

EDIT: Lol, I just checked the Mac game files site for the first time in a month and it turns out the DOOM 3 demo was just released. Thats just how good that site is...
