AMD 64x2 if you're a non-geek, and for a gamer, I heard Xandros Linux has good performance.

AMD

Definitely AMD, and this looks awesome if you have the money for it.

AMD pwns intel.

What about the new Core-2-Duo processor from intel. AMD has nothing that comes even close.

AMD great for gaming. XD

^^^ But racer, Intel chips are better because you can't run OSX on your AMD chip...

*puts on fire suit and ducks* heh heh

Ive notice that most of your advice favored AMD, I thank everybody for that.
But it seems to me that the comments of Squidring and 56k lagman are very intriguing..

It kept me hanging :( Hmmmm...More details please ;)

I have no idea how to overclock a processor, or can be bothered with Linux,

I just look at the stats. The new intel Core-2-Duo craps all over every other processor available, but it will cost ya.
Prices of pentium 3.4 - 3.6Ghz chips will drop soon I reckon.

However the AMD 64x2 with a good video card is kickarse.

Hi Tek

CPU's are one thing but dont forget graphics cards - IMO that is what makes a machine perform well - especially for gaming.

I run two machines one is a Dell XPS with an Intel 3.73 HT CPU, 4 meg RAM and ATI X850 XT Platinum Edition 256 meg graphics card. Now this is a very good machine and performs well at all tasks, including gaming, and video editing.

However I have had this 18 months and decided to recently buy another machine so after much debating I went for:

AMD FX60 CPU, 4 meg RAM, and 2 x Nvidia 7900 GTX 512 meg in SLI configuration

Now if I thought the XPS was a good machine then the AMD machine is like supersonic in comparison. I have not experienced the new Intel's yet but as of now I can safely say that my AMD will our perform my Intel anyday - but thats just my oppnion.

^u also have to take in the consideration for fsb speed
and your 512 video to your 256.

Not saying ADM is not better but your should have equal
computers to really compare.

Personally if its just for gaming and all spects are equal
I would go with the cheapest option. (and ADM is cheaper)

A gig of ram, 256mb vid card or higher, 800mhz fsb,
is all you really need.

Anything else with higher spects is just overkill.

^ agreed, the SLI is a monster compared to the Dell, and it depends what you mean by overkill? Depends on what you use the puter for.......

But like I always say bigger is best XD

Well I guess that will be the conclusion of this thread..AMD it is.
And ofcourse Daz, Im also aware with the graphic card, For all I know
its also a must in gaming.
But the Intel processor that Squidring said is still a thing in my head that bugs me.
Maybe I'll save for it to, I'll run to machines then like you Daz ;)
@Vash I agree on what you said, The cheaper, The better.
But the size thing is a real big factor and it does matter on certain aspects.

If you have your eye on something awesome that just came out, don't rush out and buy it quite yet. If you wait a bit the prices should drop considerably.

I think its overkill if you are using your computer
just for gaming.

But I guess money is not an issue than bigger is
better.

@TeikennikaH: The OSX thing is only if you buy a Mac with an Intel chip in it.

^^ Yeah vash, I think some people want really awesome performance like 500 fps on some games, but do you really notice a difference from around 200 fps?

Friday, September 01, 2006 at 1:24:33 PM

@ Player36. I'll keep that in mind. I'm in no rush, Thanks dude ;)
@ Vash. Ofcourse money is not the issue, It will be the performance that will count.
@ 56k Lag Man.Oh so that's the OSX thing, Never tried a mac before, only MS wins.
Anyway thanks for the info.

Personally I build my computers for the least amount of money possible. So I can't really participate in this. Mine is able to do what I need very well. (Some games, graphics apps, music etc)

@56k,
Wrong. I just found this the other day. You can build your own PPC machine which can run PPC linux or OSX. here

Dont worry about the dual core chips just yet. They cost a bundle and there are VERY few programs that take advantage of their capabilities. By the time dual core apps are mainstream the price for the chips will have dropped.

Id wait til then and get an amd64 in the meantime. They have the best performance per dollar

I'll take your word for that Bolo ;)

Saturday, September 02, 2006 at 11:39:38 PM

Bolo has a good point. But the dual core did beat everything in performance playing Half Life 2.
Wait and see - prices will drop.

Sunday, September 03, 2006 at 2:17:51 AM

Well I'll just have to wait till the prices drop on that dual core of intel.
BTW what is the equivalent model of AMD64 in Intel?

I like this combo.... link :P

Dude if you ever decide to go intel
pls get an intel motherboard with
the up to date bios,, intel has software
that makes overclocking your cpu a
snap...
