I think is great you want to learn to script but anyone who wants to learn to script should just try studying and see if they can on thier own... If they managed to get the basics down... I think it would be ok to give a few pointers... But with all the great resources out there, I dont see any excuse to try and learn on your own...

I taught myself how to script.
Download an admin script and figure out how it works.... Thats what I did.

So your saying, that if I download an admin script read it for a month, I'm in your (Warfare, CannedSplam, Radi8, Art Crazy) status?

It just doesn't make sense. :o

First of all... I would like to know when radi8 got into our little script group...
And second, no it takes more than just an admin script... But thats how I started out

Radi8, maybe you should try and prove this. I'm kinda of sick of people pretending they know how to script.... I am not saying I don't like you or anything but I believe that scripting takes more than looking at my race way script and the admin script..... I know that what I put in that script is like, hardly close to all that Torque Script can accomplish. If all you used to learn to script are those scripts I can safely say I'm more than skeptical

Anyways, learning to script, for me, trying it. I don't really know how to explain it but, besides studying other scripts, its almost trial and error. I learned more from scripting RollerBall than reading a Torque tutorial. As the rollerball script got more advanced and progressed I also learned more and progressed. I also have to say that I get inspired by things that warfare and art crazy do. I mean, warfare scripted the new MW I was extremely impressed and I felt like I needed to do something cool too. So right now Im trying to work on something new (not saying its as cool as warfares MW).

As much as I agree with Warfare that learning from other scripts is a good way to learn I think that you need to have some brains to go along with that whole learning process too. Maybe you should try something more simple... Like stuff Sersh covers in his silly tutorial... Learn from your mistakes, in combination with studying other scripts.

If I remember correctly... When I first tried learning to script, all I could do was edit preferences in servers and mod.... Making mediocre weapons was also something I could do too. I remember reading C++ and Ishbuus tutorial for about 10 hours and still couldn't make any sense of it. So don't expect to read a silly tutorial or script and plan to do what Warfare does its just not gonna work that way. It takes time and its hard. I guess I sorta lucked out. ;)

I didn't read any tutorials, but I am a complete geek. ACAS made sense right off the bat, but that's because I knew some programming languages beforehand. @Des, if you can learn TorqueScript, you'll be able to understand other programming languages, too. Here's some stuff you'll need to know:

X ?= y: x = x ? Y (? Is any operator)
* : multiply (instead of nXm, it's n*m)
/ : divide
if (x $= y): if x and y, which are both strings (words), are the same
if (x != y): if x and y are NOT the same
if (x == y): if x and y, which are both integers (numbers), are the same
{: start a block of code
}: end a block of code
"blah blah blah": a string, which reads as blah blah blah
%a: define a, a temporary variable (as soon as the function's over, it disappears)
$a: define a, a permanent variable (it lasts until TT closes, but it can be changed)

This should help at least a bit.

Theres clans for scripts?!?

You're welcome. These are just the basics to get you acquainted with TorqueScript, but they go a long way.
@^, the clans are modding groups, and they work together on super-projects like the MouthWash script. ScriptLine is a "scripting clan".
