He uses a dual-boot Fedora Core 4/ Ubuntu 6.06 beta system, and says that "real gaming freaks will use Gentoo. "
I use Ubuntu now. Almost all Debian based distros have the NVIDIA drivers in the apt repositories. Download it from the apt repositories, run a command and you are done.
As ^ said, it is likely that when you upgraded, the 3D acceleration got disabled. Try reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers.

Not anymore. Fedora is ultra bloated, because it has a lot of extra crap running in the background. I stopped using that a while ago.
@ IM,
Didn't think you were around these days. How is life? Long time I haven't seen you, unless you are playing under an alias?? :)
These are the results of my GLX gears:-
50239 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10047.800 FPS
51666 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10333.200 FPS
53164 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10632.800 FPS
50563 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10112.600 FPS
Looks like everything is in order.. So where do I go from here??
SK
^ Yeah, universe must be enabled.
The package is called nvidia-glx or if you have a really old card (TNT2) use nvidia-glx-legacy both packages will depened on something, but I forgot.
When those are installed, reboot. If you see the Nvidia splash screen, you are all set, if not, then open a terminal and type:
sudo nvidia-glx-config enable
And reboot again. You should now see the splash screen.
@ IM,
Here is a quiz for you. I can run SuperTux on my computer however TT won't load up. This is now really driving me crazy. Got any clues/ideas??
SK
OK.. I guess it's back to the drawing board for me then.
SK
PS:- There was nothing interesting in my box as everything is saved externally for security purposes so I re-formatted my Linux machine, and I am still stuck!! No TT... Sigh.

I am currently downloading Kubuntu 6.07 and sees if that works.
SK
@ IM,
I have finally installed the latest version of Kubuntu, and TT loads up however glxgears results were poor which means that I need some graphics acceleration.
How do I upgrade the kernel to SMP to give it the kick I need? Or is there something else that I can do?
Remember any instructions must be n00b pr00f.
Thanks,
SK
Oops I forgot to mention that I did try to change the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file however I do not have permission, how do I change this as wasn't able to make the change from nv to nvidia.
Also I tried to download the latest version of http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-8756.html however it requires a file called binutils. I downloaded this file however do install this program :- binutils-2.16.1.tar.gz
A tarball.... Man things are so much different with Kubuntu as opposed to Xandros.

Follow my guide for getting NVIDIA cards to work:
The package is called nvidia-glx or if you have a really old card (TNT2) use nvidia-glx-legacy both packages will depened on something, but I forgot.
When those are installed, reboot. If you see the Nvidia splash screen, you are all set, if not, then open a terminal and type:
Sudo nvidia-glx-config enable
And reboot again. You should now see the splash screen.
Also you will want to type this:
sudo apt-get install synaptic linux-686-smp linux linux-image-686-smp
That will install the Synaptic package manager, and the 686 SMP kernel for Pentium and similar CPUs. Reboot and yo uare all set.
@ 445/IM/DJ,
Finally I got the splash screen to work. NOw I am trying to download TT, and see how we go with this. Funny this is that glxgears still seems slow, but playing TT will be the real result. Forgot to reboot X by using "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "Backspace"..... Touch Down!!!! TT is working. YIPEE. I believe that Xandros has old drivers since it is a rather old O/S now.

@ IM,
Interesting that you would chose Kubuntu over Ubuntu, I thought you loved KDE over GNOME.
I think GNOME is fantastic however I am pretty lame at GNOME>
SK
@ IM,
I would rather try Ubuntu... Do I use the same instructions??
SK
I am using Xfce 4.4 Beta on my Dapper Beta PC. Runs fast and is very simple.
Thunar is a great file manager and has much much more features than Rox and Xffm. It uses Xfdesktop to draw the desktop and desktop menus, and uses xfwm to print windows. Something must have been wrong with your install of Xfce if it used Nautilus.
@ Racer,
I installed Kubuntu, but I will change it to Ubuntu.
Hopefully everything will be complete within the next 24 hours.
SK
The new Xfce (4.4 beta) has a desktop icon option in the desktop settings manager. It uses the same icons that are used for GNOME- the ones in the ~/Desktop folder. So it will have the same icons as you have in GNOME already on the desktop if you have icons enabled in Xfce.

Racer,
Reading through another post I saw that you have Nvidia 6600 GT video card which is the same that I have. I am curious to know which linux O/S are you running these days. Since I upgraded my video card I can't seem to get TT to work on my machine. Everything seems to work however the gaem just won't load up.
