Page : <1> :

I just want to re-iterate something here that was recently discussed on the moderator forum.

This "General" forum exists as a place for people to talk about things not related to ThinkTanks. While we can all agree TT is a game with lovely nuances and surprising depth, there's only so much TT you can talk about before you run out of things to talk about. So naturally people will gravitate towards other issues like politics, religion, morality, origins of the universe and whatever else. I want to be clear that this is completely acceptable. It's even ok to hate bush or hate kerry and tell people you do, and if you must through in a little colorful language to drive you point home, so be it. However what is not ok, is attacking someone because they like/hate kerry or bush, everyone is entitled to their own opinion about topics or public figures, it is NOT ok to attack people personally for their opinions.

So if you want to post that "GWB is a monkey" or "Kerry is a horse head" go right ahead, but if someone else posts "you are an absolute idiot" that response will be moderated. People have a right to use the forums without being attacked personally, regardless of their beliefs. People also have a right to use the forums without having to deal with endless piles of spam or crap posting. That is what the moderators are here for.

Friday, October 27, 2006 at 11:16:56 PM

Well, I'm cool and I think Parrot should get a B+ for originality. If you read his smiley rant quite quickly, it's actually very funny. He lost some steam near the end, but that happens to the best of us.

-z-'s darn pimplicous tank!

You know, I can see where hes coming from here.....

I think I might as well add this. It is my reply to a letter from a member who was bothered that he had been silenced. It should be useful for the public at large to see.

"
To respond generally to your comments, point by point:
We try to promote decorum (http://www.answers.com/decorum&r=67). The general principle of this thing is that it doesn't really matter what happened in the past. Getting away with something is not an indicator of its right-ness or wrong-ness. I don't know what was going on three years ago. I'm not really sure there were moderators three years ago. It's irrelevant.
-
I am not making you look bad by posting. You are not the first member to be silenced. You do not get a new icon that indicates this. There is no shame in it other than the shame you impose upon yourself. It isn't personal. I know well probably under one percent of the PTT members. Silencing you, and moderating the forum, could not be less personal.
-
Your definition of spamming might differ from our working definition. Aside from protecting the community from trash, we also have to balance the members' rights to post with the speed and stability of the server. Do you notice how slow it is? Each post slows the server down, which is why I commented the way I did in my post. Did you see Nightmare's post? I suspect of the thirty-four posts you added today, most were under twenty words. Imagine if the two-thousand, three hundred and fifty nine members of PTT were to add thirty posts to the database in one day how quickly the server would go down. If it survived the barrage of posts, imagine how slowly the forum would load. Essentially, PTT.com would be die. You have to consider the effects of you actions on others.

You have e-mailed me in reply to my post. Clearly you know how to found out that information. If you need to exchange such a multitude of very short messages with your friends, e-mail them or find them on I.M.
"

Saturday, October 28, 2006 at 10:50:17 AM

Another thing we can do, aside from avoiding wasteful one-liners, is to use that "Reset unread posts" button. Someone once said that one reason why PTT is so slow is that it has to process thousands of "Read/Unread" flags for each user. I have a "Mark all as read" link in my bookmark toolbar, so after each session, I click it to reset my posts. Since I know I'm a major contributor to the problem, I try to give back what I take away in bandwidth. Oh, yeah, and I've deleted about 1000+ of my old posts from old threads that PTT probably won't look at again.

I have to admit that I made those posts after a 17 hour work day in which I had only had 4 hours of sleep the night previous. I was as they say "in rare form".

Normally I wouldnt even bother remarking after such a post so I apoligize if my demeanor became less than civil.
