And last but not least, National Trasure - Great movie, Thats all I will say

Here's some good ones played only on Turner Classic Movies:

Bad Day At Black Rock - Loaded with famous heavys. See a one-armed Spencer Tracy kick the crap out of Ernest Borgnine.

Come Live with Me - A young Jimmy Stewart and the most beautiful woman ever on screen, Hedy Lamar.

And an arthouse classic now on DVD:

KOYAANISQATSI - All images and music, no dialogue. An experience for the creative types.

Of course I forgot to mention Koyaanisqatsi, made in the early 80's. One of the most wonderful movies ever made. Especially I love its music. Made by most innovative and pioneering composer Philip Glass. It's like a never ending 'fugue', continuously repeating itself. But every here and there it takes a new turn as the flickering high-speed flow of images (sped up a 100-fold times) reaches new perspectives. :P

Great movies BC! I don't think I've seen "Come Live with Me". I'll have to take a look.
Anyone like Kurisawa's "RAN"?

Oh yeah, LOL! Me forget to mention "Truth or Dare?".

NOT the Madonna movie but the horror flick of the same name. It was a campy third-rate production that is such a terrible movie me have to laugh. Me want that movie... Probably never see that one again. In one part of the movie they have a car crash scene which I could've sworn used Matchbox cars edited in for the special effects... A MUST SEE if you're into cheesy campy movies!

10 of my favs In no particular order:

Alien & to a lesser degree, Aliens (the 1st sequel)

E.T.
Contact
Shichinin no samurai (The Seven Samurai)
Blade Runner
Spirited Away (amazing animated film)
2001: A Space Oddyssey
The Professional (called Léon in Europe)

BTW, good lists from everyone!

Good lists OM and Mem
I totally forgot about Shawshank Redemption! I believe I suggested it to OM too....

The funniest thing I ever heard was when a young married couple we were talking to at a party told us what their fav movie was of all-time.
My wife and I knew then that we were old foggies!!! They said it was American Pie!!!! We laughed but then realized they were serious.
It was a funny movie, but to be your fav of all-time??? Hey, I should talk, I put There's something about mary on my list of favorites...
but it was the groundbreaking film that started that whole sick humor genre that the American Pie series has driven into the ground.

By the way, Porky's was a similar sick type of humor movie that I enjoyed when I was very young.

Yes Pai, you did suggest it to me, and I'm glad you did and I finally got around to seeing it! Very powerful movie.

Though, nothing wrong with humorous and silly movies being some of your favorites. One classic comedy that should be on my list is It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World First time I saw it, it had me in stitches! I realize it's considered an awful movie by comedic standards, but something about the pure stupidness of it just made me laugh.

1) You Got Served
2) Waterboy
3) Friday Night Lights
4)...TELETUBIES!!!! XD XD lol jk.

Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at 8:13:48 AM

@OM
Yes, It's a Mad World is a classic (many critics did like it, so it wasn't as bad as some would think). There was a recent remake but it didn't hold a candle to the original.

I agree that comedies can be ranked as high as dramas as some of the best movies ever. I think most people underestimate how difficult it is to be funny on film and thus shrug off the entire genre when filling out ballots come Oscar time. There's an old saying among actors, "Dying is easy...Comedy is HARD!" Too many brilliant comedic performances have been snubbed by the Academy thru the years! Here's a fact that proves it... Only one actor has won Best Actor for a comedic performance since 1978 (over 25 years!!).. That was my paisan Benini for his work in "It's a beautiful Life". The last American actor to win the Best Actor for comedy was Richard Dreyfus for his amazing work in the Goodbye Girl. Ironically enough, he beat out another great comedic performer that year in Woody Allen for his turn in Annie Hall (which won Best Picture).
What was the last comedy to win Best Picture? Must be Annie Hall. Tom Hanks did get nominated for BIG but lost. Peter O'toole nominated for one of my favs, My Favorite Year but lost. Jim Carrey should have won one of two Oscars but has not even been nominated yet!!! He might win this year for a semi-serious job in my fav movie of 2004...Eternal Sunshine of the SPotless Mind".
