FTP is a way to store files, and is usually not used for web sites... Even if most FTP servers are just a way of interacting with the http server.
You'd need to upload the files to the FTP server using an FTP program (I know great ones for windows, but you need to search one for mac)... The site should work afterwards.
I believe that Dreamweaver has the FTP protocol already in the program and there might be a setting that says to automatically update changes but I'm not sure. Although that last time I used it on a Mac I was very confused as well. It had a very difficult interface to work with. Dreamweaver on windows is much easier to use in my opinion. If you want to do it manually there used to be a program called Fetch You can use this to upload your pages. If you were using windows the best program that I have found is CoreFTP and is freeware.
Good luck

Fetch is a good little program. Very basic, but gets the job done.
Here's the software I use.
TextWrangler.
It's free. Need Mac OS X 10.3.5 or later.
Nice feature is the ability to edit docs "live" online.
RBrowser. It's for Macs and the FTP Client end of it is free.
If you're interested in basic HTML, here's a good reference site.

CoreFTP is nice, takes a little know how to work it though, so since you don't ahve much experience with FTP I wouldn't recomend you using it. A lot of web hosts now have built in FTP's, that are pretty easy to work. Just browse around in your web hosts support (I guess is where you could find if they had anything built in) and see what you can find.
Ah, Dreamweaver. :) I use it every day. Depending on how you're linked to the server, you should be able to update your pages as simply as hitting Command-Shift-U. Dreamweaver sets up a local site that mirrors all the files and folders on your remote server. You edit the local page, then upload it to the remote server once you've finished making changes. In order for this to work, however, you need to actually set the site up in Dreamweaver. Can you tell me exactly what he did (to the best of your knowledge) and what you've done so far with the file? Also, do you have login and password info for the ftp server? If you do, I can walk you through setting up the site, and you'll be better off than having any of the other programs mentioned here. I also use TextWrangler, and I've used CyberDuck for ftp, but I prefer Dreamweaver.
Btw, I design websites for a living, so if you need help with anything else, I can probably give you a hand.

Another decent free FTP app for Mac OS X is Cyberduck
Though, as others have already mentioned, most big html editors like Dreamweaver and GoLive, etc, already have built-in FTP functions, so check there too.

@ Jay; Do you have a.Mac account?
{WalMart free for over 24 months!}
I use terminal. ;) it comes with a simple ftp program that allows you to put ang get files to and from the internet. The program is called (ironically :P ) "ftp" and the two commands it uses are "put" and "get" :P

Right basically my friend created a website for me but I told him I needed to change things from my computer as he was the only one who could edit it originally. So he suggested that I download a free trial of website editing software, so I did and I now have "Dreamweaver 8" for Mac.
He set up a "File Transfer Protocol" for me which has all the files that create my website and ive been able to copy those files onto my HD and can open and edit them in "Dreamweaver". My problem so far is that I dont know how to upload the edited files onto the "File Transfer Protocol" and then im guessing once ive done that it will be automatically updated on the live webpage!? Am I right!?.
The person who created the website for me is very very very busy and I dont get to talk to him very often so I thought id ask you guys!
Remember im really new at this so please make it easy for me to understand lol! So if anyone can help me id be incredably gratefull!
