Its a bloody stupid habit.....and I admit it took me ages to get around to quitting.

However its going pretty good so far. Pretty grumpy the first day, but getting easier and easier.
Really feel like one when I have a beer after work.

Anyhow - any of you other old / semi-old farts like me feel like quitting?

And for you kids - dont start - its stupid and expensive.

Cheers

Right onsky, Squid. Your kid will thank you.
At 20 minutes after quitting:

Blood pressure decreases
pulse rate drops
body temperature of hands and feet increases.

At 8 hours:

Carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal
oxygen level in blood increases to normal

At 24 hours:
chance of a heart attack decreases

At 48 hours:

Nerve endings start regrowing
ability to smell and taste improve

At 2 weeks to 3 months:
circulation improves
walking becomes easier
lung function increases

From 1 to 9 months:

Starting as early as a month after you quit smoking, and continuing for the next several months, you may notice significant improvements in these areas:
coughing
sinus congestion
fatigue
shortness of breath

At 1 Year smoke free:

Excess risk of coronary heart disease is decreased to half that of a smoker

At 5 years:

From 5 to 15 years after quitting, stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked.

At 10 years:
risk of lung cancer drops to as little as one-half that of continuing smokers
risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases
risk of ulcer decreases

At 15 years:

Risk of coronary heart disease is now similar to that of people who have never smoked
risk of death returns to nearly the level of people who have never smoked

Squid, Way to go!!! It took me 3 times trying before I finally did it. Every time at about 6 months, it would really get to me and I would break down an start up again. This time I made it through the 6 month mark and have been nicotine free for over a year....and I don't miss it a bit.

I've got a fever, and the only prescription, is more cowbell.

Good for you, squiddy...

My dad stopped when I was in my early teens. He was a major bear for a while, and sometimes he was so mean I wanted to buy him a pack, but it's good he quit. His younger brother died of lung cancer last year. My uncle never gave them up. (hmmm... That's two uncles, one on either side of the family...)

And just think, after not smoking for about 6 months, you've saved enough money to buy a nice computer.

I figure my uncle could have bought himself a sweet Porsche with the money he smoked. Or maybe a house, since he lived in the sticks.

Good for you, Squiddage. I'm a heavy smoker. I hate the habit, but haven't really made a serious attempt to quit yet. I just can't imagine life outside of "flavor country". A couple of co-workers quit through hypnosis- how did you do it? Cold turkey?

Yeah Squiddy, good for you. The Commonwealth of Kentucky leads the US in smoking and I'm a casual smoker myself.
Good going man!
Your wife and children will love you more for it!
Cheers,

If you seem to be getting grumpy from not smoking, try to find something else to take your mind off smoking, like a hobby. Works for many.

Good for you Squid, that smoking stuff is bad for your health. Find something to keep your mind off it, and pretty soon you won't even want a smoke ever again. :)

If you ever get the urge to smoke again, go out and buy a pack of altoids instead. No joke. My teacher quit smoking that way.

As for me, I am allergic to tobacco. It is a gift and a curse. I can never walk around downtown geneva w/o getting massive coughing fits.

Pardon my rudeness, I cannot abide useless people.

Smoking just polluted the Earth and makes you look "uncool". I'm in High School currently this year and it just makes me sad to see a 15 year old get peer presured in smoking. :[

I congratulate you SquidRing. Quitting smoking is as like fighting in World World 2 with all the pain and suffering that soldiers had to dealt with.
