I was playing today under an alias when Chong, once again, unleashed a string of obsenities and kept doing so for the entire game. There are young children who enjoy playing this game, my daughter is one of them. I hate to keep griping about the same things over and over, but isn't there anything that can be done about this? Can't you block ip's on the public servers? Some of the mods have anti-cursing scripts installed in them, why can't they be used on the public servers? I am going to have to remove my daughter's access to TT unless something can be done about this. I know Chong is not the only one who uses profanity, but lately he has been the most vulgar.
I have a screenshot I took today of one of his most graphic belchings but I didn't want to post it here for fear of offending anyone else. If you need to see it, please email me and I will send it to you. My email address is in my profile.

Wal

Sounds like the match I walked in on - he was on a real mission today.

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 11:58:56 AM

He's always a jerk on TT. And /I just doesn't cut it- especially if the younger members don't know about it.

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 12:11:28 PM

Yep Wal, you were there. Aside from Chong's (and Destroyer's) garbage mouths, it was a good game.

Sherminator have you got the ignore script.... If you have put him on ignore! Then ull here no more bad mouthing untill you take him off or you exit tt

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 1:09:08 PM

I have a question, does the ignore script have a permanent feature? Log the persons IP in a file and you will never hear 'em again?

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 1:10:38 PM

No leg you cant do that unless you lurs that person onto your server ansd it would only work on your server as the host of the public server cannot show you there ips therefore the only way is to hotkey /I chong into tt

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 1:13:31 PM

I understand the ignore script, and I use it frequently while I am playing. But what about when my daughter or someone else's daughter or young son is playing??
Maybe there should be a permanent ignore script. That way I could put Chong's name in there and it would never allow any of his filth to get through no matter when or what server she is playing on.
Has anyone given thought to this idea??

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 1:13:59 PM

That could be done but youd have to ask art and as soon as everyone has chong on ignore hell imposter people and people impostring people will get that person put on ignore so that would not work in th elong run!....
hey im missing my tv show answering all dis!

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 1:15:48 PM

Knowing Chong,he'll just go with different names.

Sherm, nothing can be done to protect your daughter or anyone else on public servers. The admins here don't have any control over those. Take JJ's advice. Stay away from the public servers if possible. Or at least keep your daughter out of them. And please install the ignore script if you have not already. At least that way if someone starts potty talking, you can quickly ignore them and you won't "see" anything they say.

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 1:17:32 PM

Excellent advice. Administrators can intervene to protect other players from the effects of abusive sociopaths. We do have the means of obstructing their hateful distractions: silencing them, kicking them, banning them, regulating civility...what we can't change is their fundamental character. If anything could have been done to prevent this most recent episode, Chong, and others like him, would already have been denied access to the game.

Miss Lovely is a delightful young lady who is liked and respected by lots of players in this community. Having an environment in which children of all ages can play without the threat of abuse or hostility is one of the main purposes of hosting a mod and enforcing basic rules of good sportsmanship.

Even if you do Ban his IP so that you cannot hear anything he says, He has shown us that he can use proxies, so he can keep changing his IP.

Try to track his MAC address, that never changes. Or, better yet, gimme his IP, and I'll find out where he LIVES.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to ban people on the shockwave servers, since they are run by shockwave.com. I'll ban him from the PTT servers though.

I have a question, does the ignore script have a permanent feature?

Yes, actually it does. Make a text file called "IgnoreList.txt" and put it in your "ThinkTanks/game/client/" folder. In that text file put the names of the players (one per line) you want to permanently ignore, and you won't see any chat from them again. Unfortunately it has to be an exact match, so you have to write it just like they write it with all the strange characters and what not. Of course if they change their name...

Not the best solution, but it's there.

Some of the mods have anti-cursing scripts installed in them, why can't they be used on the public servers?

Actually, that script will work on the client side also. So you will not see any cursing on your computer no matter what server you are on. It has some problems though since it does partial word matches, if someone types "Pass" you see "P****". But maybe that's a trade off you are willing to make. You can edit the word list to add or remove words (or creative spellings that you would like to block) as you would like. You can also what it replaces the text with, so if you want it will replace curse words with "waffles" or some other innocuous words.

Try it out, you can always uninstall it if you don't like it.
http://supra.planetthinktanks2.com/archives/comm-thread.asp?thread=6616&forum=2

I realize these are not complete solutions and will not come close to solving the whole problem, but they are available now, and they might help to make a small step in the right direction.

Very informative post, 56K. Thanks.

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 3:42:18 PM

Hey folks, for those of you wanting to protect their kids, you can use the CHILD SAFE FILTER already in TT (Not sure but I heard MESS uses this - that's why ne ver chats). Basically you miss all the chat :( Not the best solution but really, does anyone under 10 year old have an ABSOLUTE need to chat online?

Hmm this Chong takes way too much time to deal with... He must come from a difficult family situation to have to draw such attention to him. :(

And Bravetree have no direct access to the Shockwave servers,

Let's pray for a TT2 feature :P

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 6:03:05 PM

Thank you very much 56K, I will try that out immediately and let you know how it works.

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 6:25:01 PM

@Notgonnasay: not everyone aims for sewer standards :)

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 6:33:29 PM

56K, I installed the clean string script, but it isn't working. I am on a pc and I followed the instructions in the read me file.
The instructions say that only 1 word has been blocked and I need to add more, but when I looked at the files, there are many more already there. Have you added those yourself, or do I still need to add them manually?

Tuesday, April 05, 2005 at 7:00:57 PM

You shouldn't need to add any strings.

As for it not working, double check that all the files are in the right folders. All three go in different folders so it's easy to get them mixed up. If they are all in place and it still isn't working, use Notepad and open your ThinkTanks/main.cs file and add
exec("game/client/scripts/clientstringclean.cs");
at the very bottom.

Also this won't filter out all things. Misspelled swearing will still come through and player names can still be vulgar. As Hugo says, the child safe filter is the safest, (though most restrictive) option.

Thanks 56K, that last suggestion worked. Now I feel much better about letting her keep playing the game.

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 3:14:13 AM

I also have a daughter, I would like to tell her about this great game I found TT but have held off telling her until I could see if there was alot of this talk. It's hard to find a game that both of us will have a great time playing. 98% of you out there are great to play with. My daughter lives with her mom so we could play in the same game. I don't know much about what you can and can't do with the servers. Here is an idea. Could you set up one or two servers with password access where they can talk however they want to. You couild post the password on this site with a warning about the kind of game it is. If you have to stop to put in the password kids would not be wondering in. There would be a limit to what could be said but they can go get their anger out. As far as the rest of the games they would be more then welcome as long as they keep it clean. If they started to talk that way, we could let them know by everyone turning their guns on them and make them leave, maybe they would learn"There is a time and place for everything. And around the kids is not the place for that kind of talk!!! They as in the people using the server would have to set it up if they wont somewhere to play and talk like that they can do the work.

Yes having someone like Chong around really ruins the game. JJ makes a good point though, if you see him (or others) dont go in. Yes it does suck that if your already playing a good game and he comes in and does his thing because he thinks it makes him somebody, you gota leave. To this day there are a bunch of people I will not play with and servers I just won't go into. I rarely go into a publice server or a private servers were I don't have admin, or there is no admin there. Personally I havn't seen Chong do any thing "vulgar" in the past few weeks. However, I used to be on the recieving end of it over 6 month ago and I know what he is capable of. The one thing that I have learned from this is how to throw up a locked dedicated server for me, my boy and friends to play in. I suppose I could get 56k great ignore script but why should I let scum have the oppurtunity to have a good game with me?

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 6:34:35 AM

@ Sherminator

I also have had some issues letting my son play this game unsupervised. It appears there are just way too many youngsters that have access to these games and the internet in general. I once was able to compromise with Chong, but it appears he has elevated his intent to go to war with others in the public servers. As Nuts stated, I also have a server or two running. I don't use the ignore script too often, but I do have the ban script in use with a very extensive list of offenders.

If necessary we could even put up a server that is password protected, utilize the ban functionality and monitor the chat log. Anyone one using even the slightest amount of profanity would be added to the ban list. The password could be only passed out to parents who will take responsibility for their children. I would think that would make a safe, fun place to play.

I make one exception here. As an adult, in games where I feel comfortable everyone is of age, I have no issues with people expressing themselves with profanity or otherwise. The issue there is you never really know if youngsters are present, even if there is one unfamiliar player. I will be emailing you for the screenshots. If these are indeed as vulgar as you say they are, (and I'm confident they are) I will be sending an email to the private server Admin group requesting Chongs banning for good and suggesting that he is dropped from all league play.

This has simply gone on too often, for too long.
Enough is enough.

Have you seen me play lately? The `skills` I constantly brag about are clear evidence that I've been playing too much. I need to get a life away from the computer, step outside get some fresh air meet some friends (a BIG maybe considering my disorders caused by not seeing other life forms for too long)

-Who's the sick one really, think about it.

Someday I will learn to respect others. But until then Moderators will continue to edit my posts.

Chong,

What's the point? Why are you here? What positives do you bring? You get on a server and start typing all these words you just learned in school that day and drive everyone off leaving just you and the bots... Is that fun? Then you get on here and tell us to get a life because you can't control your language?

I have a life. I have a job, car, house, wife, friends, dog, college degree, bank accounts, self-respect, and responsibilities.

What do you have chong?

Get a life.

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 9:58:14 AM

Ah Chonger when will you learn?

You tell us to get a life when you are begging to get back on ptt.

I have been fortunate and have met people from TT. They were real people too, as are we all.

As for fresh air I get plenty while playing with my sons in my big back yard. I suggest that you pull your head out of your arse and take a big breath of fesh air. Maybe you wont be so confused?

NUTS!

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 10:08:51 AM

Be careful NUTS. I remember a while back Chong informed everyone that he was in one of the biggest and baddest gangs around. I wasn't surprised since I had already known that all the hardcore gangbangers played TT.

As my boy ICE NOOB once said, "Life ain't nuttin but TT and money."

Word is bond.

Hehehe.

Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to be on my toes.

Invite a retard to a picnic and you'd better expect to get drool in the potato salad.

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 2:41:11 PM

^LOL

Do you feed it? Or do you ignore it?

I SHOOT it...TT or real life...hehe

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 5:56:08 PM

I wonder if maybe we can get something like the ignore script, only when you put them on there they stay on there and they dont come off unless you put like a password in or something...and maybe we can get a spell checker? XD

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 6:02:23 PM

How to enable the permanent ignore feature:

1. Go to your game/client folder.
2. Make a new text file and call it ignorelist.txt
3. Put in the names you want to put on permanent ignore there.
NOTE:: Name must be EXACT. Even 1 error [ie. Extra space, wrong letter, etc.] will cause you to still be able to hear that person.

So now your new file [save as.txt] should look like this:

Ann0Ying YuTz
MoRe AnN0yInG YuTz

Just some example names.

To view the list in game, press Ctlr+I and you will be able to scroll down the list in the chat box.

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 6:36:50 PM

This isn't about us or Chong getting a life it's about the kids that are learning what life is and what kind of person they will become. !!!! Sherminator I with you and I'm behind you 100% and I'm sure there are alot more parents out there just let us know what we can do.

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 7:02:59 PM

Sherm, still waiting for those screenies. I also had another run-in with Chong and Destroyer last night. Working on he problem. :)

LGM

Warpath, that's a great idea. I've used the ignore script for a while, but just installed the Word Filter. Very nice. Now I get called a **** instead of... Well, that f-word. Makes me think I might let a kid try it out now.

EDIT: BTW, it works on the client side even if the server doesn't have the script installed. B)

How abouts you just put on the parental lock feature thing... That means no peoples spraff can get through to your son/daughter and then take it off if you yourself are wanting to play and be spammed
