Oh my, Life is sooooo strange.

From CNN today......
Christians issue gay warning on SpongeBob video
Conservative groups criticize maker's 'tolerance pledge'

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Conservative Christian groups accuse the makers of a video starring SpongeBob SquarePants, Barney and a host of other cartoon characters of promoting homosexuality to children.

The wacky square yellow SpongeBob is one of the stars of a music video due to be sent to 61,000 U.S. Schools in March. The makers -- the nonprofit We Are Family Foundation -- say the video is designed to encourage tolerance and diversity.

But at least two Christian activist groups say the innocent cartoon characters are being exploited to promote the acceptance of homosexuality.

"A short step beneath the surface reveals that one of the differences being celebrated is homosexuality," wrote Ed Vitagliano in an article for the American Family Association.

The video is a remake of the 1979 hit song "We Are Family" using the voices and images of SpongeBob, Barney, Winnie the Pooh, Bob the Builder, the Rugrats and other TV cartoon characters. It was made by a foundation set up by songwriter Nile Rodgers after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in an effort to promote healing.

Christian groups however have taken exception to the tolerance pledge on the foundation's Web site, which asks people to respect the sexual identity of others along with their abilities, beliefs, culture and race.

"Their inclusion of the reference to 'sexual identity" within their 'tolerance pledge' is not only unnecessary, but it crosses a moral line," James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said in a statement released Thursday.

Rodgers said he was astounded by the attack.

"That is so myopic and harsh," he told Reuters. "You have really got to look hard to find anything in this that is offensive to anyone. The last thing I am going to do is taint these characters."

Dobson was quoted by the New York Times on Thursday as having singled out the wildly popular SpongeBob during remarks about the video at dinner this week in Washington, D.C.

SpongeBob, who lives in a pineapple under the sea, was "outed" by the U.S. Media in 2002 after reports that the TV show and its merchandise are popular with gays. His creator, Stephen Hillenburg, said at the time that though SpongeBob was an oddball, he thought of all the characters in the show as asexual.

It is not the first time that children's TV favorites have come under the critical spotlight of the Christian right. In 1999, the Rev. Jerry Falwell described Tinky Winky, the purse-toting purple Teletubbie, as a gay role model.

Friday, January 21, 2005 at 2:41:44 PM

Hmmm!
One time it was Capt Kangaroo
Then it was Mr Rogers
Now SpongeBob?
Oh brother!!
See! I look at people as people first!!!!
I care more about how you conduct yourself in society
Are you respectful and courteous?
Kind and considerate?
Helpful, funny, interesting?
Who cares if you eat limburger or marry your cousin
(Well maybe the limburger) but I digress
I am here a long time now and have always believed that
predjudice breeds contempt
and contempt is an example of thinking that you're better than someone else
hello?
We are all good at something!
Being whiter or righter or a good fighter doesnt make you a better person and sexual preference is irrelevant
These ppls should be less judgemental
They would live longer!
@TG Hey K8 you really wanna good scare read "The Handmaids Tale"
my 2 cents

Where did that stuff come from ?

Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 12:16:54 PM

While were on the topic on the beginning of "life"...

Alrighty,The way we see things are flawed,we think that everything has a beginning somewhere, and an end.

But there is a problem with that, where did everything begin from? And don't tell me god,he musta appeared sometime right?

Our assumance (I'm not sure that's a word) of a beginning in everything is not true, there must be a "spawning point" for everything for that to work.

Ah crap,I lost myself in my own speech,I gotta stop talking about these theory science stuff.

Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 4:10:49 PM

If god created the universe and all living things on it, then who created him/her?

Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 4:54:59 PM

God always was an always will be its better than some crack pot ideas.

Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 5:02:44 PM

@ Treavis: The thought that all things need a beginning and an end is like the thought that sadness and happyness can't be mixed. It's just something that we think because we can't think of something not having a stop on both sides. You're statements are criticly flawed though, you aked what created the universe cause it must have come from somewhere, and at the same time said that God was ALWAYS there, for forever. Which raises the question about when he started "being there" since the universe couldn't always be there. A little infinate loop for you XD. Now to be hypocritical: Please don't send this thread spiraling off track, which track it was on I'm not too sure about but... If you're gonna have an argument make your own thread.

Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 7:14:56 PM

YES! HE IS! HE SHOULD DIE NOW!!!!!!!!

Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 7:19:39 PM

Holy cr....
Who the heck is driving this thread? I think its already taken out three old ladies on the sidewalk!

And when did Racer get so serious? He must have a younger sibling who worships SB. That, I can understand.

Frankly, I think Squarepants is pretty fun to watch. A lot more entertaining than most re-digested stereotypical cartoons out there!

As for Christians who spend their time trying to sniff out any trace of bisexual-tolerance and then attacking in full force........I'm rather ashamed by it. Remember, there was once a time that people were pulling out passages to support that Black people were descendants of Cain and therefore lesser folks to the eyes of God. Can we please stop interpreting little ambiguous bits of bible text and then using it to create our own personal crusade? Do these people even realize how belligerent and stupid they look to those of us that can hold a bigger picture? Skin color and bi-sexuality are not listed in the 10 commandments nor were mentioned by Jesus.

Sheesh....

Nope, wrong. I am a single child and always will be.

I have always HATED Spongebob ever since he came out, I don't like any other cartoons on 'Nick' and hate the network.

I just wanna.... Wanna.... Scrub the toilet out with him.

Sunday, January 23, 2005 at 3:41:05 PM

Spongebob is great. He is shown often in my confirmation classes. Any conservative christian who thinks spongebob is gay needs to be excommunicated for being a moron.

Sunday, January 23, 2005 at 3:43:00 PM

Do you not remember a episode where he acts as the mom to a baby clam with Patrick? Or the time he wears fake eyelashes? Geesh.......

That's another whippersnapper belted by the feared AncientOne!

Sunday, January 23, 2005 at 5:21:35 PM

Spongebob.. A 'shemale'? OMG I'm glad I never watch it.

Sunday, January 23, 2005 at 7:07:35 PM

Here we see SB giving the Iraqi code for "Stick it up your butt, Great Satan!" Gay? I don't know, but he's got Moxy®!

Monday, January 24, 2005 at 9:12:16 AM

Pray to Budha & Jesus ...not SpongeBob.

Monday, January 24, 2005 at 9:38:26 AM

Ya know, we're all missing the point.

I went back and reread the article and visited the "We Are Family Foundation" website.

Its not that Christians think Spongebob is gay, but that the foundation that used his and other children's characters' images has a pledge on their website that they feel promotes acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle.

TOLERANCE PLEDGE

Tolerance is a personal decision that comes from a belief that every person is a treasure. I believe that America's diversity is its strength. I also recognize that ignorance, insensitivity and bigotry can turn that diversity into a source of prejudice and discrimination.

To help keep diversity a wellspring of strength and make America a better place for all, I pledge to have respect for people whose abilities, beliefs, culture, race, sexual identity or other characteristics are different from my own.

So its the "sexual identity" bit in the pledge that has two Christian activist groups commenting on the promotional video, not Bob's (or any cartoon's) perceived orientation.

Its the "U.S. Media" that "outed" Bob in 2002 since the merchandise was popular with gays.
