Anyone have the time to point a newbie in the right direction on how to create my own tanks skins? Is there a tool generally available out there that I can do this?

For an ok first skin Try MS Paint if you have a pc

Or:

PhotoShop

Paint Shop Pro (This is the one I use)

Actually I managed to figure this one out on the weekend; a skin is simply a jpeg file with the object template carved into it (of course everyone already knows this), soooo...

I searched my harddrive for some cool jpegs, and then replaced all terrain skins with segments of images from the Mars imaging satelite, and managed to create a cool looking "real" Martian terrain. Cool! B) Though the trees do look out of place.

Thanks for the links.

I will, as soon as I figure out how to upload images to a posting;

OK here you go;

Kinda seamy, and yeah its B&W, but I really like the way the Mars erosion layers turn out. Not bad for half hour playing with MS Paint and a found image. Makes a cool Tank skin too! If you like, I'll scrounge up some color shots and redo?

Here's the original pic.

Cranium

Medulla

Hypo Hills

You have to have the images hosted on the web someplace. You can't just link them from your computer.

Try here: Uploadit.org

Or stick it somewhere on your personal web page where nobody ever goes temporarily. U can get several free web pages like geocites, etc.

However, many of them (free web page sites) don't tend to allow external linking, so you would have to create an html page for the images and provide a link to that instead.

Boy do I feel like a heel! I will upload the rest tomorrow. Hope they aren't too huge to view.

Heh quite nice. Makes the world look like it has been modelled and moulded out of muddy clay and left to dry out in the sun :)

The trees dont quite match, but other than that, it's a good start.

Hey Oddball, you beat me to it. I was attempting to make a Mars landscape, but had trouble finding some pics to work with that I liked. Although… it loks like Uploadit.org trashed your files, so they're no longer showing up in this thread. Bummer…

Are you planning on releasing thsi terrain. Oh, on another note, -z-, will you be getting around to updating the site to allow users to submit skins and terrains? (I'm sure you wil, so sorry if I sound like I'm bugging)

Uploadit lost all the files on server 5. Just reupload.

Go ahead OM. I was thinking of doing one in color, but my time is limited and I'd rather play then mod.

Check out the Mars Orbital Camera web site itself. There are some great color pics there with good close-ups of dune and rock textures.
