As the saying goes, Whatever floats your boat. I dont mind people in heavies in CTF, what I do mind though is noobs in heavys getting thrashed because the dont know what thet are doing. But experienced players in heavys (if they know what they are doing) can be a big help.
If you know how to use a heavy, yes they're beneficial. Again, if used right, it's good to give the scrum to a heavy in the goal cause they can outlast everyone else.
I do have to STRESS that the person knows what they're doing.
Gotta have a light for Scrum. However, since CTF requires more firepower than Scrum, the Heavy is actually a good tank. In a couple games, it turned out to be a good tactic for the lights to invade in formation with a Heavy. The Heavy would pound everything inside the enemy goal, and the lights would grab and go.
As LilAlien says, the player has to know HOW to use a Heavy. Sniper skills would make the Heavy a deadly weapon.

Heavies are good if the player is a marksman...
Also need at least one light who can go bring the scrum back to the home base.
The heavy is too slow to go back and forth.
Leave the heavy in your goal and pass him/her the scrum.
Use the lights to block anyone out of the circle
If the scrum makes it to the enemies goal the heavy can do some long distance sniping..
The heavy isnt useful if somebody makes a break back to your goal and the heavy isnt there to pass it to

From what I saw, the Heavy sacrificed itself in wrecking havoc on the other team's defenses so that the light could grab the scrum. Upon death, the Heavy would spawn back near the goal to receive the scrum.
However, the player has to be willing to take the sacrifice. A death is a lost individual point. Usually, if the heavy gets to hold the scrum during scoring, it counters this loss.
I'd play a lot more CTF if I could at least hit the broad side of a barn.

I'm a big team player. I try to put myself between the opposition and the scrum carrier and I've even used my Heavy to clear brain mines placed around the goal.
I will admit moving between the goals can be a problem, but that depends on the map. Lush are the easiest while Frantic is quite hard.
The thing is to find Light players who know how to work with the Heavy player instead of spending the entire game shouting, "Switch to a light, dammit!".
But then the question is, are we here to have fun or to win (or maybe have fun winning)? :)
When I ever get to play CTF, I use a formation that goes like this...
Step One: two players in lights go for the ball.
Step Two: one gets killed and one brings it back.
Step Three: the one that gets killed respawns as a heavy and drives to the goal.
Step four: that new heavy and all the other players get a heavy and create a wall around the scrum carrier.
That's how it goes! Have fun with it. XD
Damn, Racer, it only takes 2 lights for you guys to get the scrum? I gotta see you strut your stuff in CTF sometime, because we generally need at least a 3-tank assault to successfully extract the scrum.

JB - You interested in joining the CTF league? (See the thread in the leagues forum if you are) Would be nice to have you in there.

Sorry -z-, but I just don't have the time to commit to a schedule right now. I'm still trying to get things tied up with my new house, new job, new kid, and new military command. My brief times in the battlefield are completely random.
I'm a pretty good scrummer, but I'm not too hot at CTF. I love it, but I've got nothing to brag about in there.

I've run into a few games where players keep yelling for me to switch to a light during CTF. This is especially interesting when my individual score is the best in the game. While I prefer not to try to run with the scrum and try to pass whenever possible, I do find that with the right team the heavy is a very useful tank for defending the goal and definitely softens up the opposition.
So do you think CTF is for lights only or should every tank be welcome?
