The title sez it all. He's the one who lives in the apartment over his parents garage, continues to drink with a diseased liver, yells at his family and live-in girlfriend, mean to the pets, and revs his motorcycle at 2am. Somedays his is nice and friendly, but when the drink takes him...

This morning he's yelling at me to keep my cat inside cause its getting in their garbage (no way it could be the two cats he keeps outside all the time) then he tells me to keep my kid inside too. Obviously I'm saying "Sure" and "Yeah, I hear ya" while knowing he's on a drunk and in a mood.

But, he's got a record and a history of violence. (and outweighs me by about 80lbs.)

So, how to deal with this guy? I try to be nice and all, but then I can't allow him to dictate what I do. I've thought about getting a weapon just in case, but then having something in the house brings its own dangers. He stresses me and my family since you never know what he's going to do or how far he's going to take it. I know he can be cool and helpful from time to time and I think he wants to be a good person, but there are so many personal demons this guy is facing and you never know when he's going to go too far. A cop lives behind us both, but I've never seen him during one of my neighbors stunts, so I guess he's gotten used to his antics.

I'd like to move, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. Maybe he'll die, but I hate to wish that upon anyone. I'm afraid its going to build up to some horrible day that we'll all regret.

-continues to drink with a diseased liver
-yells at his family
-mean to the pets
-revs his motorcycle at 2am
-he's got a record and a history of violence
-outweighs you by about 80lbs. (I'm guessing not muscle)

@KBC - Yes. He actually kicked her out about a month ago, but she came back. Of course, it doesn't help that she works for his dad, but that girl has her own set of issues. :(

In the meantime, I'm trying to decide between WWJD & WWLWD. ;)

I thought Stinky was still in Japan?

:)

Seriously - whatever you do regarding a weapon, make sure you have the will to use whatever you acquire...be it a gun, baton, or pepper spray.

I had a "neighbor-from-hell" a few years ago, so I know what you're talking about. The guy would kill our pets, was a peeping tom, etc....until I finally had enough, and the guy moved a few weeks later. What I say from this point forward I say from experience.

I think if you call the law on him enough pretty soon everytime he comes outside his house he'll feel like Osama bin Laden.

If all else fails - talk to his parents and relate your concerns to them. Of course, you could also confront him and tell him that if it came down to him hurting your children or loved ones and you blowing his ass away you won't hesitate to make the right decision....but you gotta mean it when you say it. He'll know if you are serious. You'd be surprised how often these guys that show their ass like that are often afraid of actually "getting down."

Personally, knowing that he is complaining about your children....I'd go for a.45 auto and a restraining order (of course you should have gotten the police involved a few times before you file it). The first time he gets within 10 feet of them send him on his way....one way or the other.

Yah Chief, that's a good solution for his family. Hell, every family needs their father to be in at least one murder trial.

Rabbban, call the authorities and get a restraining order. If that doesn't work, move. I know. Why should Rabban move? I work in real estate and have had circumstances comparable to this come up.

Actually, other than a new job or simply moving up, a bad neigbor is one of the more common reasons I get for the purchase of a new home. I'm selling my mailman's home for him because his neighbor owns six cars, takes his parking spots and his kids have vandalized his property. My mailman had the neighbor's cars towed and is certain that is the reason his punk kids are vandalizing his property. He's called the authorities but has no way to prove yet that it's the neighbor's kids.

Rabban, ever think of purchasing some land mines or handheld rockets? The police will never doubt you that he was a bad dude if you go to this extreme. Heh. The best thing to do is to make a bad neighbor a former bad neighbor.

Buy a gun, confront him and tell him that it's him or you. Too funny.

Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to be on my toes.

Invite a retard to a picnic and you'd better expect to get drool in the potato salad.

Sorry if I come off funny, but I have a real issue with someone threatening children....whether my own or someone else's. If I have a button, I guess that's it and it's a big one.

I'd rather stand trial for murder and defend myself than attend my children's funeral.

I had a neighbor like this guy once. He was real nasty at times.

The best advice I can give you is to talk to your local officer and see if a restraining order is in line. Better safe than sorry

Chapter 2:

This morning Chris decides to rev his motorcycle again...at 5am. He did this for about 5 minutes. I suppose the joke was on him however since I was already wake from sinus pain. Ha ha? The wife and child were undisturbed.

At 8am we notice an ambulance in our neighbor's driveway along with two cop cars in the street. They're taking Chris to the hospital. He walks out under escort, mouthing off and waving his arms, but they finally get him to lay down on the gurney. Yesterday he was upset that I didn't speak to him first thing, so I made sure I waved at him before they closed the ambulance doors. I also recogized one of the responding officers from my son's T-ball league, so I'll try to talk to him about the situation and see what he advises me to do.

At 8:20am I'm in the local Medical Center to finally get some help for my sinuses. The PA on duty comments to a coworker that the ER doc at the hospital is having a difficult time with a "combative" patient. Obviously I had to fill them in on the details. ;)

I know this kind of sounds funny to people, but it really isn't. These guys can be real dangerous. The one I knew abused his wife and kid, then tried to get people to believe he was a good guy. It was a tough sale for him after he took his WWII souvenir Luger in the backyard and started firing. It's not fun to have the cops show up in a peaceful little rural subdivision with drawn weapons...

My old neighbor ended up drinking and smoking himself to death, but that was after he messed up too many people's lives.

As they used to say on Hill Street Blues- "let's be careful out there..."

Friday, February 25, 2005 at 8:25:02 AM

The only thing that I can say is move out to the country.....I have an acre and a half of peace and quiet
and my home sits in the middle of it all.. The neighbors shoot, can't see them trees on both sides of the property
it seems to be getting worse in the cities or subburbs...I lived on the beach before I came here and it was always so crowded
houses piled on top of each other neighbors looking down your throat, could not make a move without somone knowing about it or asking why?..and there was always just one neighbor that had to be stuck up your backside..always telling me where to put my plants or how to raise my child...I'm done with all that now and I would not trade it for anything in the world I can walk out my back door sit on my swing and watch the hawks fly above me or at night watch the fireflys dance in the night....I do not hear or see my neighbors anymore..My grandchildren can play outside with no worries or someone asking what? Why? Or how?.....My advise get out of where you are and forget those who destroy your peace because just as long as you live in a city or suburb you will always have just one that that thinks the world should be followed by their rules wether drunk sober or just plain crazy you will always have one....Just my thoughts

No guns or weapons unless your willing to take the considerable amount of time required to become very skilled with them. A surveillance camera might be good. Attach it to the eaves of your house and record all of his antics to hard drive. Rotate that out to dvd when the hard drive fills up. Probably one week of his behavior documented in this way will be enough to get action from the police

Over here you can be moved if your a anoyence to the neighbourhood you just need video footage and a few other people complaining

Sunday, February 27, 2005 at 8:24:36 AM

LEAVE ME ALONE !!!

Sunday, February 27, 2005 at 9:48:19 AM

UPDATE: Talked to the town cops. Their basic answer was there wasn't anything I could do about him until he was actually on my property. So if he comes to my door again and I ask him to leave, if he refuses then I can call the cops on him for trespassing and public intoxication. Since there's no noise ordinance outside city limits, he can carry on as much as he wants. When I asked what would happen if he caught me outside on the way back from the mailbox or something, I can just report the assault. If I fight back, I can technically be charged with battery myself. Basically the cops are here for the clean up, but there's nothing to be done to prevent a bad scene.

So after that phone call I was rather upset. Looney toons can do whatever he wants while I abide by the law. Of course, if he does come over and tries to start something, I'm not just going to take a beating. My wife and I toyed with the idea of setting up giant spotlights facing his apartment and playing classical music, but man, what an electric bill! ;)

I'm going to call the Sheriff and State boys and see that they have to say about it. I should probably look into the law myself and see what it has to say about this sort of situation.

@dash - I think my 9mm (not to mention the M16) training in the USAF would be enough, but I prefer your suggestion concerning the video cameras. Heck, I might even make some money on Maximum Exposure , Cops or America's Funniest Videos. :)

Sunday, February 27, 2005 at 10:14:34 AM

Sunday, February 27, 2005 at 10:19:45 AM

Our nieghbors have alot of construction equipment. They use it at about 2a.m. They have a mean big black dog.

But I guess that's Alaska :P

Sunday, February 27, 2005 at 10:42:13 AM

Ahh, didn't know you were ex-military, yes buy a gun If your sure you can use it.
As a father and a husband one of your primary responsibilties is protection of your family, but it is a complicated issue and requires honest self-evaluation which is hard. If you will hesitate at taking a life to protect your family then having a gun is more of a hazard than a protection. I was in the marine corps when they transitioned from the.45 to the 9mm and so used both. I prefer the.45 as a side arm. This was my primary weapon . I would love to have one again just to take out to the range once in a while but I'm too busy these days and the area I live in has a very low crime rate so I'd rather not have a gun as my house is kid central. I only have one kid myself but for some reason there are always 4 or 5 around.

Wow.. You look at things so different in the US.. The whole buying a gun solution would not work here in Canada..Just an observation thats all.. I am sorry you are going through the problems Rabban..

Monday, February 28, 2005 at 11:46:36 AM

People who watch chris farley's skits on saturday night live will get this one: MY NEIGHBOR IS EATING A STEADY DIET OF GOVERNMENT CHEESE AND LIVES IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!

Monday, February 28, 2005 at 11:54:42 AM

Get a bodyguard.....

Monday, February 28, 2005 at 11:55:22 AM

Get a bigger, meaner, drunk to confront him... And let them go at it..(kidding) but he might need a good dose of his own medicine. Iv'e had neighborhood problems when I was younger but I had the advantage of having lots friends. Maybe just a good scare would do the trick. Not sure If I would handle it that way with family and kids involved. Wish ya luck what ever you persue.

@doc: you can't buy guns in canada?

Tuesday, March 01, 2005 at 9:32:08 AM

I had a great idea, so I acted on it.

My cousin is a police officer in a larger town in my home state. I talked to him about the situation and he suggested pepper spray (just in case). He also mentioned that he may get in contact with some "old school" state troopers in my area who may have a late night visit or a roadside chat with my neighbor and try to steer him in the right direction. My cousin's the type who still sees things as "black and white" when it comes to the law and understands the personal touch when it comes to enforcement. ;)

@Dash,

It is MUCH harder to get a gun in Canada and a handgun is especially difficult.. Damn liberal country.lol

@Rabban,

I am very glad you have come up with a solution.. I like it and I wish you the best

Good luck!
