I don't think wine is very good for computers... Does it not short circuit things? Maybe that's why your having problems
Also, have you considered that it's infact not a problem with your computer but a problem with your ears? Do you not think it's possible that the sounds is reverberating around and not hitting your ear drums until a second later? Maybe if you hit them with a hammer it'll fix it. Possibly they're very selective and only really want to listen after wine?
Anyway... You shouldn't be drinking at your age! Shame on you
Ooh ooh,
A demo told me today:
if you want to get your ears to work you've got to hit them with a hammer and press the left arrow at EXACTLY the same time. This'll give you the light ears and will mean they're faster and easier to hear with... But remember, you've got to do this on the CHOOSE EARS screen and do it at EXACTLY the right time.
^ Idiot. :(

No, Wine actually means "Wine is NOT an Emulator!". And speaking of Linux Qs, can anyone help me with NDISWrapper? I downloaded both drivers for my F5D6020 (an INF and a SYS), consulted the Wiki (the F5D6020 is #10), and still nothing.
Did you install the Alsa-drivers - and then used "alsaconf" ( /sbin/alsaconf ) to setup your soundcard correctly?
Also, if available for Ubuntu, you might consider a low-latency kernel.
Here is a link to the sound card I am look at buying. This is my current sound card: C-Media CMI8738
@Traffic Q
Yes, Ubuntu comes preinstalled with Alsa. And as I have noticed, there has not been an alsaconf utility in Ubuntu since the old Warty Warthog release.
@IM
I do not have artsd running or esd. In fact, I installed Xubuntu (yes I tried installing regular Ubuntu too, but I am going to try again) from the CD, which does not install esd or arts at all. I will try the OSS drivers.
@ {UF}Racer445:
Did you solve the sound problem as yet?
Are you shure your harddisk is okay, after the crash?
Isn't your linux-distro the latest version? It's possible that it comes pre-setup to start up "loads" of extra routines/daemons which you never would need - and thereby occupying lots of processor-time. The C-Media sound card uses much of the processor-time - since it doesen't have hardware mixing and other "advanced" capabilities.
I have used the C-Media CMI8738 myself, and it's certainly not an advanced DSP-chip - but it should work okay anyway. You might consider the "hard way" of downloading the newest ALSA-drivers + ALSA-utils, and compiling it yourself - OR at least get a pre-compiled version of both ALSA-drivers + utilities (to get the "alaconf" utility). Sticking with the "outdated" technology of OSS-drivers is certainly not a preferred thing.
Anyway, the SoundBlaster Audigy soundcard you were considering, should work very well. It's a much better soundcard than C-Media.
I have not solved the problem yet.
We called up Maxtor and they sent me a replacement hard drive after the crash, so it is brand new with a fresh xubuntu (minimal ubuntu with xfce) install.
My linux install is the latest and has all the latest updates, however, it still uses a slightly old kernel version (2.6.15). I have been thinking about switching distros, but I love the easy-ness of Ubuntu. I am sure I can find a download of alsaconf somewhere.
I will purchase the sound card and see if that helps. I just got a set of Pioneer bookshelf speakers to add on to replace the fronts of my current 4.1 creative set, and I've been dying to try them out in enemy territory and TT.
I wonder, is there any good Mac emulators for windows?

Recently I had to re-install Ubuntu 6.06 due to a hard disk failure. After I re-installed, my sound in games got delayed by about a second. This is incredibly annoying, because I will (for example) shoot a gun, then a second later I will hear the BANG sound, which makes games like Enemy Territory and TT very hard to play.
However, there is no sound delay in WINE and other apps that use OSS.
Has this happened to anyone else? How can I fix it? I am going to puchase a Creative Audigy 2 ZS, and I will see if that helps.
*goes back to playing half life in WINE*
