Before you get yourself into the habit of using just filters, get to know these three tools that can make a blah piece a WOW!! Piece:

1. The Brush tool. It's like a paintbrush, so you can paint all kinds of cool details on like fire, names, etc. Plus, you can download more brushes from sites like DeviantArt so you can make your piece look even more amazing!

2. The Dodge, Burn, and Sponge tools. The dodge tool can make really dark things lighter just by moving the mouse around, and the burn tool can make things darker! The sponge tool saps all the color out of whatever you have your mouse over, so if you wanted to make something look like a zombie or metal, for starters, here's the tool for the job!

3. The Blur tool. The blur tool can make weird little blobs and specks blend perfectly with the rest of the piece with just a flick of your mouse! It's perfect for little oopses that you made and either can't find a way around them or are too lazy to properly fix.

Above all, for your second piece don't use only filters! I know that Photoshop is hard and weird and difficult, and I'm not knocking filters at all (they are quite useful sometimes), but a piece made of only filters is usually considered rubbish. Just search around for a few good tutorials and you'll get the hang of it!
