What constitutes vets? Anyone that has been around for a long while? Or is it based on a superior skill set and length of time they've been playing?
OM,
Seems to me that a Vet has been around for a while. Just being a great shooter or scorer does not make you a vet. In pro sports there are top players who are still rookies.
Hmmmm
How WOULD we define what a VET is? Maybe it is someone who has been playing for six months?
Now I notice must if not all of these are scrummers, do you want BM too ? B)
Veteran: (adj) Rendered competent through trial and experience.
(noun) A person who has seen considerable active service.
Technically speaking, this game has been around long enough that most players are vets anymore (not that I'm dropping hints about when the heck ThinkTanks 2 will ever see the light of day before the sun collapses into a cold black hole......nope, not at all!).
I think the word you are looking for is Elite or Expert TTers.
In any case, glad to see I'm not on the list! I can relax and play without high expectations of my peers or fear of getting BMed constantly. :P
- Bomb…James Bomb
Hey Professor and Sniper,
This is potentially a brilliant idea, but I think for it to work it will require some leadership, hand-holding, containment, structure and close moderation. It's hard to imagine how this wouldn't turn into an all out hate-fest.
Some ideas: what if someone created a website where each person would have a page. Then people could post (anonymously if they don't have the courage) comments under each person. That would get the ball rolling.
The problem is it is very difficult to really understand where someone is coming from unless they are very articulate and honest, and easy to misinterpret comments. I would be surprised if this would really improve relationships that already have a problem.
Probably a better way to address a particular problem that one is concerned about is to just e-mail that person privately.
-Rx
@Reagent X
Great post. Your last comment was the best advise because a couple of good TT friends have emailed me privately to ask me what was going on in my personal life that obviously impacted my TT behavior. I've since posted my apology and explanation. I also appreciate the way you send private messages to players on your servers and emails whenever you have an issue with someone. You give players a chance to explain themselves before chopping their heads off as some others tend to do with their knee-jerk reactions. We all appreciate it.
Hey, Chong has already started a website with detailed reviews and criticisms of players. I always hold my breath and hope that I don't see myself on his review list! He is blunt and brutually honest.
Also, I think we just conducted a massive Bolo review in Tally Ho's Apology thread (which has since morphed into something completely different). Sharing criticisms in a public forum can become very ugly very quickly as people can become defensive the moment they feel attacked.
I think everyone appreciates constructive criticism, but not everyone knows how to do that the right way without sounding like they're insulting someone.
Don't forget Moe......
I, for one, am ready to withstand whatever criticism comes my way....I'm a big boy (these days in more ways than one - LOL)....
I am watching very close Rx so I think we will be fine but I do agree email is the best way. B)
I knew there was a reason I didn't start threads. I will be content with handing people their asses in game.
@ Professor
No please continue, I think you have a good idea. I am also sure we can keep it clean. Remember this is in our best intrest if it helps us learn and grow from our mistakes.
Thanks for taking the initiative Professor.
While the airing of grievances was 1 part of my suggestion, the other part was giving out props.
RX - While you are a voice of reason -- "The problem is it is very difficult to really understand where someone is coming from unless they are very articulate and honest, and easy to misinterpret comments. I would be surprised if this would really improve relationships that already have a problem."
What I really thought would come out of this was an extended, commented, ranking system with editorial from all of your peers.
I copied a list of vets ( end of message) off Pai's site and was thinking people could comment on each player. Anonymity might be nice for the poster, but then you do not own your comments.
How about we do it like this...
1) Copy this list and add/subtract any names you wish.
2) Write a comment that best describes your personal take on this player.
This may take a while but there at least 20-30 players that I have a distinct, way of playing against/or a distinct like of, or a distinct way of handling.
For example, do you like to be on certain people's teams? Do you always avoid the goal if <XPLAYER> is there?
Do you seek out <XPLAYER> to pass to?
DO you wish <XPLAYER> would chat less and scrum more?
Do you beat <XPLAYER> on lush maos but get battered down on volcano maps by <XPLAYER>?
DO you think <XPLAYER> should pass more?
For example I'll go first just using Reagent X and LONEWOLF'.
Reagent X : "Rx is in my opinion, a top 5 player in Team Scrum. He is without fail always either right where he needs to be or ( if on the other team) right in my way. For the longest time, I could almost never swipe the scrum from him and have only recently been able to slow down his scoring. If I see RX in a team game, I try to choose the opposite team (if the balance will not be off) so that if God willing, my team actually wins - I'll have a feeling of accomplishment. Rx is a great driver, a good shooter when needed but most of all, he's good at reading the field. Being on RX's team and winning just seems more like an expectation. In short, of all the core players who make TT fun, RX ranks #1. My only greivance is your goal spawning."
LONEWOLF'. "I dread being on a team against LONEWOLF. He's vicious and relentless. Example, You are driving after the scrum carrierr who is running away just tucked behind a ridge and unable to be hit currently. LONEWOLF spawns and drops in front and to the side of you. As you pass you give him a couple of "friendly" area effect blasts as you wait for the scrummer to once again become a target. LONEWOLF will unfailingly fall in behind you & beat you into the ground. I think of lone as an "Enforcer" like the guy in hockey who is out to body check you. Except this enforcer can score. LONE is a great driver also and if he had any weakness at all, I'd have to say it would be his aggressiveness. It's not that the aggressiveness is "bad", it gets him goals, and let's him capitalize on those who hesitate, but the weakness is that, given an in-game scenario of say, three options.. You can typically assume that Lone is going to make the more aggresive move. All you have to do is stop him... If your brain is still in it's respective jar. LONE can sometimes kill the fun out of a game for me personally. Probably just a collision of playing styles, but he tends to take the finesse out of my game when I'm having to look out for him. Greivance? He''s got one of the quicker tempers seemingly - LW is easily a top20, maybe top 15, player in team scrum"
So with these maybe you guys get the idea.

This is a good idea. Can you throw my name on this bottom list, though? I was in the top list (kinda) Silbarcalis. I've been around awhile :)
Time to put the thinking cap on...
Silbarcalis
Hmm...this is properly named, I'm pretty grieved by all of this. Legendary took the time to mention that you forgot me, and you completely ignored him on both lists. Just to let you guys know, I've been here as long as or before most of the people that you guys listed as vets up there, and yet no one can seem to accept that I'm a part of the PTT community. I don't get it; I've mentioned several times that you guys never take the time to acknowledge the fact that I'm here and part of a discussion. Is it that I'm too young? Am I too un-mature? In any case, you guys just took away what was left of my good day, started from the Mini Mac.
The list is just a suggestion that I copied.
I could only write similar commentary on about 20 players.
The rest would get a one liner like - "Good" or "haven't played with them much."
Sniper
Spunky :
generally under-appreciated. Flies under the radar which proves to be an asset in games but tends to bruise the ego on ptt forums. Similar to get some in this manner. Wiley vet...knows all the "tricks" and employs them skillfully w/out drawing so much attention that it brings insurmountable retribution from opposing players. Great as an "ace up the sleeve" type player.
How was that? ;) I actually dont know you that much spunk...seen you around here and there. I feel your pain (despite my own mention by prof in the opening post....thx bud! XD )
Hey, thanks for caring get some...I feel a little better now.
I had TT longer then a lot of those people..........................
Had it since about July 23 or something.
Hmm...I think you forgot Leopard if I'm correct....
That's another whippersnapper belted by the feared AncientOne!
^ mongo is up there
Thinktanks installed Aug 28, 2003
Could it be because:
A. I've never seen you around
b. The date you registered on ptt is november 14, 2004? That's less then 2 months! Come on...
Sil
For some of you complaining about not being on the list, I suggest picking a name sticking with it. Changing names every month makes it hard for people to remember if you've been around for a while or are new. Seriously…
@Spunky - You're an old-timer in my book. Been here since the beginning. I for one don't forget about you. :)
Now there is a greivance.
Props first:
If I had to pick an elite team, here are my boys (please note: for TS only):
ReagentX - as Sniper mentioned, homeboy is hard to steal from. Got his wits about him...plays whatever role given his position in relation to scrum, goal, other players. Good at seeing play unfold in advance. Quite adept at smoking tanks as well.
Bolo - guns. Similar to Rx, sees play in advance and develops strategy. Camps well. Unwilling to accept poor play from mates, and will let them know (a positive I think). Ego a PLUS.
Tally - The King of the Camp. He once roasted so many mallows for smores I swore Stay Puft was dead! Similar to Rx, hard to steal, and good at stealing. Guns are pretty good...great awareness of situation.
LilAlienD - well rounded. Drives, shoots, steals well. No particular specifics...I just know when the chips are down, he's gonna use his grey matter.
Prof - dunno...I just like the guy :) Shoot okay...gets angry easily, so you know he's fired up!
Other great srummers - would also luv the have em, but can only field so many per game. These are the things that stick out in my mind that make them great/elite.
MAX-cr - the undisputed King of Air. He's got hops like Jordan. On the "Who's Who of Scrummin"
Minnow - run, run, and run! I want him carrying the scrum. Few mental errors...great steals as well.
Lonewolf - ditto what Sniper said!!!
Evil-twin - Makes great runs...hard to bring him down. Something chacteristic of all great/elite scrummers - ability to play role they are handed in a given situation. Steals, blocks...he's got it all.
More later...don't feel left out if I haven't mentioned you yet!!!
Hmm, this could lead to some good side action team scrum/battle games. So I'm gonna chuck my dream team out there for some first dibs.
Here's Rogues Official Yoko Squad: (I'd take these six guys on a team with me in any genre of TT.)
Supra: silly killer and a selfless team player
Nuts: IMHO one of the very best there is in TT land, he'll hate me for saying that which is why I want him on the Squad
Dash: superb gun and drives like crazy, also a great passer
Mongo: can you drive by this guy without losing your brain? A very good scrum goalie
Rogue: his mom says he's special so is on the team
+ these two vagabonds
get some: this guy is one of the best team players out there, plus somebody has to crack jokes
OM: this guy blows me away, steps away from TT for months at a time and comes back like he never missed a beat, good gun, strategic and a consomate team player
I'll take a good gun over a shifty driver in a second. I also prefer a cooler head. No Madonna's on the Yoko Squad.
Bring your boys and we'll dismantle all ye want to be Beatles with our guns blazing and singing voices off key.
A team I would select would always consist of those that play both TS and TBM quite often and together on the same team.
Here's a thought: Would you all be interested in having a "King of the Ring" type tourney? Pick five of your boys that you play with regularly and feel would make up the best team. We could then have a single elimination tourney consisting of the above mentioned vets or whomever else may be interested. Just a thought to spice up an otherwise regular late night of scrum. No draft or anything like that. Just bring your team list of five to a thread. It's not gonna matter regardless because my boys above shall be "The Kings of the Ring." Heh. Any thoughts? Might be fun. Maybe we all can actually get a crack at the self-proclaimed "Scrum Champs."

I feel this thread taking off...this is gonna be fun. Will contribute my thoughts later. Currently busy working on a Think Tanks trading card mock up. Check out thread for more info.
Well I want to thank The Professor & Sniper for the props. All though I will admit, I am hurt Sniper that you only view me in the top 15 of the best in TS. It could be due to he fact that I don't play much with you. I am generally in the late TS games at night. I do agree at times I do tend to get to aggresive. I would like to hear what others rank me at.
As far as,
He''s got one of the quicker tempers seemingly
I will admit in the last month I have been a bit bitchy at my team about 25% to 40% of the time. In total games it was 3 or 4 that I was like this (have not been able to play the late games as of this last month due to Life ). The main reason had to due with Neewbee's in TS. I have since cooled way down. I have even helped some of those people I bitched at in those games. I just have "High Standards" for myself. So I need to remember those are my "Standards " and thats it unfair to my team mates to set such high standards on them. Please give me some time and I will post my comments on some one ! B)
^^^ It's on, especially since I'm out of the "Yoko Squad." 8(
Don't forget...I used to be able to hit a few targets in bm ;)
Heh, I had to keep the name. For some reason that cracks me up. Yes, this could be a pretty good time. I'm waiting for the UF team to speak up so we can quickly dispense of them and put an end to that myth. XD <--my first ever usage of the smiley face, sorry 44.

Okay the trading card mock up is posted...goto thread to veiw (shameless plug)
As for my "squad"...i'll start with tbm 1st...team scrum will come later.
TankOr - what can I say...he brought me into the league. Can dodge like no one else and hits on what seems like 80% of his shots. One of the best at going alone into a group of opponents and coming out with multiple kills. Still dont know how the guy did it.
Professor - been getting my butt whupped by him since I began playing. Rather have him shooting with me than against. Sure he's got a temper sometimes...but he only seems to get better with rage. Plus he laughs at my dumb jokes, always a plus.
Bolo - I can go at this guy with full health multiple times and he still will get the better of me. Always seems to have his gun trained on ya no matter what position he's in. Very high hit %
Rogue - solid and dangerous player. Plus he makes me laugh. If I want to have fun and increase my chances of winning, this guy is a must.
get some - I gotta be on my own team....dont I?
Other notables:
Willow - great team player. Does whatever is needed under a team concept and can kick it up a notch on his own.
Mani - can really move around a map and pick off players quick. Great shot and has no prob standing on his own.
Lancer - not mentioned often but a solid all around player. Knows how to use a ledge and bait you into coming to him...gets you right where he wants you.
AirForce - I know the kid isnt around anymore, but I remember watching him rack up 10+ kills in tbm while the rest of us would log 3 or 4 kills. Took advantage of opportune moments like no one else.
Plenty of others deserve mention but this would be my team in tbm. Would love to go at it vs ANY team with this lineup.

These lists of players are dopey (to quote Rogue). :)
Note: Tongue in cheek.....
By the way, people not mentioned in these lists or not ranked as high as they feel they should be shouldn't feel too bad.
Everyone is a work in progress and I believe everyone gets better with time no matter how long they've been around.
I've been playing 9 months now and still learn new things every time I play!!! I guess it's like golf (only without the ammo)...
just when you THINK you've mastered the game, the game humbles you big time!!! I think that's part of the charm and attraction of TT.
@ pai
unlike other "list" threads I dont think this is meant to serve as a ranking forum. This is more subjective and I believe intended to serve as a space players can offer their oppinion on other players, both good and bad. It has currently taken the form of individuals "dream" teams but doesnt have to be that if someone chooses to use it in another way. I think the ranking/who is the best player forum has been done (and done again....and again) and has a limited lifespan. This thread offers more I think.
Hope that was a decent explanation...dont want to put an unnecassary or inaccurate framework around this.
@Getsome
Thanks. I think you're right about the differences between the two types of lists. For example, I go to a website for web developers/designers where everyone submits their newly designed webpages for brutually honest oppinions and suggestions from their fellow designers. Let me tell you, it can get very harsh, but it's always good feedback. I think this thread can be the same kind of thing. As long as it's constructive criticism and not just slams or insults. I like the whole idea.
@ROGUE
Thank you, you are to kind. I would love to play with that team. You would just have to keep the "nut" jokes to a minimum so I could play without laughing so hard (especially the hairy jokes). Can I have a hug?
Well to shut up about a player would go against the spirit of this thread..hence the title "airing of greivances". Just a point of order...dont be so sensitive. :)
Page : <1> : 2
Sniper had this idea in another thread. Here's a list of vets...please add any I have left off. If this thread gets out of hand, feel free to lock it . If many of you feel it will cause too much drama, feel free to speak up to have it locked . I will fire my shots/opinions tomorrow night...have to sleep right now :)
