I thought I'd resurrect this old thread because this is truly a game I'd love to see in the next version of TT or earlier. I was just talking to Roo about it and I hope it's possible. My thoughts are basically the same, but I think the goals should spawn now. Anyhoo, here it is:

Instead of one goal, we have two. And, after every goal is scored, there are two new goals colour-coded so you know what to defend and what to score on. If you die, you spawn in the middle of the two goals.

Every famous modern game has two goals: Soccer, Football, Basketball, HOCKEY...etc. Obviously, it;s a winning formula. It would certainly take care of the passive camping element and make the game more aggressive.

Since BraveTree obviously makes a living outsourcing, I wonder how much it would cost to pay Joe or one of his underlings to make such an adjustment to the game. Or does the community have another -z- at its disposal?

Here's the header to my old thread:

WHY OH WHY OH WHY?

In the almost 2 years that I've played this game , WHY OH WHY OH WHY is there not a soccer/football mod and a gladiator mod?

You guys have pulled some wonderful tricks already. I never visit here and now I'm pleading. Honestly, I feel quite guilty and embarrassed for exposing myself in these forums now, but please, for the love of God, help me out here.

I can't mod for beans, but for all the originality out there - and there are some truly great maps and skins and unbelievable talent - surely someone out there can develop a new game other than -Z-. Or is he the only one? The chosen One?

I emailed dash (excerpt below) about these ideas a little while ago. Any feedback and/or feasibility as to how to achieve this would be greatly appreciated. I see great entertainment in both these games.

Possible stipend negotiable.

Gladiator mod:

I proposed this idea ages ago to have Hoosane and Ben fight each other. -Z- was just about to make it, but we haven't heard from him and the two guys chickened out. Basically, it's a mod with a gladiator feel to it. Boulders all around with little openings on the hilly outskirts for observers to park their tanks and observe. Enclosed would be an almost flat terrain - perhaps moderately hilly - that would allow the 2 combatants to face each other. They would only be allowed to enter through a specific passageway. If programmable, they would be locked in until the match was finished. There would be no power-ups of any kind and no terrain to hide behind: only space enough - but certainly big enough to whip around in - to drive and shoot. This mod would most certainly settle many disputes about who has the best shot. Not to mention the hilarity of the comments dished out. After I'm done with SK, I'm taking care of Stan when this mods out.

FOOTBALL/SOCCER MOD : Like CTF, there would be two goals and two teams. However, points would come from scoring - rather than protecting. After each goal the flag goes to the centre and teams fight again. I was thinking about smaller goals for more glamorous scoring Y'Know spinnin' it out and jumpin in. CTF is a more defensive game whereas this would lean more to the offensive and provide a less lull-filled atmosphere of getting back into the action.

I know that BillyBob did a hockey mod and I'd like to try that out - being Canadian and all. But, for me I don't believe I'm the only vet who would like to see these other games happen. In fact, I know I'm not.

What's the word in modding land?

Or has my cartoon dream just ended?

Jangles, I am currently in the process of creating a football mod. I have the scripts ready and functioning, however, I'm having trouble exporting the Football in the DTS format from Blender. You have to pick up the football (you can takcle tanks too) then either score a touchdown or a field goal.

Have the gladiators on the red team, then program an invisible wall to kill blues or greens if they touch it.

I can do that.

I tried to do soccer...All I have now is a ball you can kick around...

Heya nick,if all the tanks are gonna do with the football is pick it up and drop it,I can make you a milkshape football. ;)

Sheesh, dont get all syco on us.

Its not as easy as it seems...

Besides, I've seen some that look pretty close to "soccer"

I'm not asking for a striped field with jerseys or a ball you kick around or lob. I'm talking about the same ol' scrum and set-up as CTF, but with the scoring reversed. You get points by entering the opponents goal. Am I missing something here? Is it not possible to manipulate the scoring such that you don't get points for holding the flag in your own goal; but rather points for scoring in your opponents? Most North American games are based on this, why not TT? Why just the one goal only in team scrum?

Hi Jangles
fun playing u the other night
For the gladiator mod see if dashs G2 is what u had in mind
go to http://thinktanks.jkdg.com/ and dl the G2.ter and the G2.mis
drop both in your TT/game/data/missions folder and rename the mission
to TT1_5.mis
Then it will appear in the lush series in the Create section of your game
It has inviso walls surrounding a Battle Bowl

Hey Rooster,

Fun blasting away with you, too. Your low ping server and varying maps are always entertaining to play on.
I did notice dash had a Gladiator map once, but I never got to try it. Thanks for the info! I'll give it a shot. I had always thought of the Gladiator map as one of those you would launch when needed (i.e., when there's a challenge); rather than one that would be in constant rotation on the master server.

The football/soccer mod, on the other hand, would be a huge hit if tweaked right. I was around when CTF had its beginnings and growing pains and now it's a bonafide game. I believe the same would hold true with this mod and would provide another dynamic to team play. Am I hoping for too much? How was the scoring tabulated by the mod gods who have played around with this idea in the past?

Sorry Jangles you would be playing in one right now...but...When it was almost complete I ran into some problems with the Field Goal...see in order to score you have to jump through the Field goal...well the field goal didnt want to work...so you would score a point everytime you touched the Goal...other wise I would be done....the Yard lines are done...the.TER is done(by Art Crazy)...so if anyone can make me a field goal...and not just any field goal...it has be so I can use it in a function....kinda like the scrum goal

Saturday, December 04, 2004 at 8:04:32 AM

I made a field goal w/ scripts, I just set the collision parameters to a bit BEHIND the actual goal. I'll see if I can post it later.

Saturday, December 04, 2004 at 8:09:45 AM

Great work guys! Keep it up!

What I'm thinking of is the exact same feel as CTF - same terrains but with smaller goals - except the scoring is reversed. Green scores on Blue, Blue scores on Green. Basically, a scrum match with two end zones. Very simple and not really modded to look like a football field, but rather just a different point system. Can it be done?

Saturday, December 04, 2004 at 8:30:25 AM

Indeed, that would be very easy...

Saturday, December 04, 2004 at 8:41:32 AM

Well that's good to know. Thanks for letting me in on that. How 'bout if the two goals weren't static, but rather spawned in different places after each point - like in scrum now? The same goes for the flag. This would avoid repetition and give it a similar feel to the one we're all used to. It would also eliminate any homecourt advantage (providing there was a proper spawning script in place).

Saturday, December 04, 2004 at 10:15:15 AM

Well I can do that...but...would be not as fun

Saturday, December 04, 2004 at 10:15:16 AM

If you can do it, I'll gather up 8 vets and we'll give it a try for few hours. A promise on that. If it turns out not to be fun or needs tweaks, we'll let you know. I just think dressing up the terrain to look like a football field would take away from the general appeal of TT and perhaps turn people away. Maybe I'm wrong. I still haven't tried your hockey mod, yet.

FWIW, CTF began as an experiment with FP and -Z-. All us old-timers beta-tested it many times and put our thoughts and inputs into the design they were creating. -Z-'s final model is the result of his ingenuity and a great deal of input from the community back then. I can't see how this new concept is a bad thing any way you look at it.

I also miss those highly creative days with -Z- and FP and think the talent here goes well beyond just skins and maps.

Saturday, December 04, 2004 at 11:02:53 AM

I can help too, I made some great CTF scripts and could be EASILY transformed into a football/soccer-type mod.

Saturday, December 04, 2004 at 12:55:34 PM

I have limited knowledge on scripting, but I've done it before.

Or if that doesn't work,I can make objects.

Maybe I can help?

Saturday, December 04, 2004 at 2:18:47 PM

Well, if you guys could start on a simple template, that would be wonderful. I was thinking of beginning with a stock map, 2 scrum goals, and keeping the game basically in tact. If I remember correctly, -Z- told me that it was impossible to have two different coloured goals. Instead, there would be an indicator in the radar as to what goal you had to go to score in (as in CTF). I believe that if this were successfully implemented, the game could be further tweaked and instead of the half-court team scrum game that exists now, we could have a full-court version.

Again, I know nothing about modding, but I know what I'd like to see and I would be more than happy to act in an advisory role. My email address is in my profile, so please feel free to give me a shout.

Much thnx,

J

A lot more possible and reasonable to make it now.

Love the four goal idea.

Football/soccer seems a bit hard... Let's take it one step at a time.

Less Talk, More Mod, people.

Saturday, March 04, 2006 at 12:48:39 PM

Yeash, all of this has been done before. I have played in a hockey mod before, ur brain was a hockey stick, and when u rammed into the puck it would go in that direction, then there was two goals, and barrier walls. And for gladiator I dont really know waht you mean, but there have been P-L-E-N-T-Y of arena battle mods, heck, thats almost what all of mine are. Football is the only thing I havnt seen, cause ud like have to make it so when u ram into the person they die lol =D

Soccer/Hockey = DONE
Gladiators = DONE
Football = Good for the taking

Tada! So good luck with the football mod lol, all I can do is make weapons for ya =-p

Saturday, March 04, 2006 at 1:41:32 PM

ALL I'm looking for is another goal in scrum - EVERYTHING ELSE stays the same. No hockey sticks, no pucks, no footballs, no freaky lazer beams.

Saturday, March 04, 2006 at 6:43:43 PM

What a bump!!!

Ok here is what I am hearing;

1 - two goals
2 - offensive and defensive play
3 - scores for team kills and goals scored

Just to modify that stadard scrum game with two goal is not my bag however, I was gonna keep this quiet until release but as you have posted this request I have some good news for ya, and besides we should start letting the community know and get some interest going.

I've been working with Canned Splam on a new game type, which was originally suggested by Rooster back in November, we have modified his original idea slightly and will soon be releasing RollerBall, somewhat based on the 1975 film. Canned has done an exceptional job on the script which we are testing at the moment but so far all is extremely good. I have created the maps, which are all new, nothing stock has been used (all new objects, terrains, sounds etc). Here is the deal;

1 - the game is played in an arena, we will be releasing 4 maps for series one Houston, Madrid, Moscow, and Tokyo
2 - players spawn at the end of a tunnel and are shot into the areana by way of arrows.
3 - the flag/scrum or as it will be in our game the RollerBall is created by entering a gate, the RollerBall will spawn in one of two selected locations
4 - you will then have to collect the RollerBall and take it to one of two gates (one for green and one for blue) on entering your relevant teams gate your teams air goal will be activated, a timer starts and you will have a set time to score. If time runs out the goal needs to be reactivated by entering the gate again.
5 - each teams gates and goals are at opposite ends of the arena ( i.e. The blue goal activation gate is located near the green goal, and visa versa)
6 - points are awarded to each player on the same basis as BM and scrum, but team points are only awarded for an actual goal
7 - after a goal is scored the game restarts with all players being shot into the arena again via the tunnels.

Hopefully this may meet your expectations - major offensive and defensive play, extremely tactical, goals for each team at opposite ends of the arena, individual scores and most importantly team scores. We believe that RollerBall has all these elements and following our initial tests I am pleased to report that the game plays very nicely indeed!!

We will be releasing RollerBall very soon following extensive testing. The last few months have seen this idea develop into something that is extremely playable and visually stunning. So on release my elf and Canned Splam hope very much that you all will like it, if so we already have plans for series two.

CS will probally be slightly annoyed for me posting this, but the need to generate interest in our game starts here.

Just to wet your appetites here is a screenie of the houston map

RollerBall will be comming soon
