Macs are getting increased scrutiny as their numbers go up
I have always said, and will continue to say this:
Most of the computers in the world have windows installed. Lately, windows has been losing users to linux and mac. There are probably a lot of security holes in macs, but as it doesnt have many people, virus programmers concentrate on windows. Now that windows is losing and mac is starting to win, it wont take long until virus programmers start switching to macs ;)
I've been expecting this, and thanks for the reminder, Nap.
Running software updater right now. More of this will happen, so keep that Mac updated.
No computer is without a back door, remember that B)

Racer, you act like linux is so different than BSD.
It's not, get off your high-horse.
SOOOO worldly and knowledgeable for a 14 year old.
Who's saying anything about BSD?
Anyway, maybe you mac people will stop gloating about no spyware now?
Fanboys? Nobody in this thread is boasting about better this, or better that. You must be thinking about one of those other threads.
This was a courtesy to those running this OS. It also mentions Linux ans being vulnerable too.
No boasting or bragging, in fact it's all of the NON-0Mac users in here trying to bash Mac.
Go figure...
Oh but there was bragging Nappy
I can remember the day Macs came out, and ppl were like "Have u ever heard of a Mac Virus??" and saying it with pride XD
I'm with Racer on that one, that takes care of the bragging Mac users :P

I know linux is as vulnerable. There are several linux viruses mainly targeting businesses and Apache.
I just HATE the mac fanboys here that always think mac is SO much better than others, although I am not talking about this thread.
There is a huge group of them here.
I totally agree with ^ and ^^. There are tons of mac fanboys how love to boast about how macs don't have viruses and windows(and linux) does......
Pass the popcorn...
Well, I've got a mac but im no fanboy. Frankly, I'm worried about my compy - its a relatively old PowerPC G4...I'm thinking about looking into some serious protection programs....I don't think those little software updates are enough. :S
Not going to say I'm 100% right, but the software updates come out specifically to patch the holes that are discovered. They usually get on those quickly, too.
I use a virus protection program, and always check files coming in via e-mail, downloads, whatever. I even check on TT files. The only viruses I've found were spyware for Windows (java stuff), or Word viruses.
Spirit, my laptop is a G3, and it keeps chugging along. Your G4 still has some life left to it. Those security updates are important. (As they are for any OS)
HELL YA
Thx nap your truly a call from heaven
Let me make one thing perfectly clear.
I LOVE Racer.
No not in that way, I just love the way this kid is coming along.
Although I think each person has their favorites and rights to say so, one of the thing I really respect about Racer (And soem other younger folks) is the fact that they ARE thinking for themselves.
They are trying new things like Linux, which is not at all the mainstream. Typically a person would be pressured into Windows or Mac and I like the fact that these young people are seeking out something else.
Racer is the youngest person in the admin group I believe, and ALWAYS conducts himself better than most. I'm not sure what Mrs. Mamma-Racer and Pappa-Racer are doing, but I think they could make a buch of cash writing a book on parenting techniques.
But as I said I'm not here to praise one or the other, I guess I'm kind of sick of seeing the bashing of the non-favorite just as much as anybody else.
Well put, Napalm. I've got a lot of respect for Racer. I just don't get why he reacts so strongly to any thread that mentions, supports, or discusses Macs.
Maybe a little more tempered approach would help, 445. I know you love your computers, including that sweet PC you lit up so nicely. I applaud that. I'll always defend the right to enjoy the system of your choice. Even if it's a Mac. (or not... The choice is yours)
Racer I only got two things to say to you... I Love My Mac ...... And your a nub XD
Indeed, there has now been a bug found for mac, and proven, but lets just try to do some counting now. How many are there for PC? They're generating new ones every day...
I will readily admit that lots of this is because of users, and now that mac is pulling up a little, it's target will widen. I will say that susceptibility is not the main reason. Although, I do believe it has something to do with it. ;)

The first spyware program for Mac OS X has been detected. The
proof-of-concept code could potentially be installed without users'
knowledge. The program, known as iAdware, installs itself as a System
Library. It does not exploit a flaw, but takes advantage of a feature
in Mac OS X to run each time an application is loaded.

[Editor's Note (Skoudis): Mac users must fight the feeling that they are
invulnerable simply because they are using a different kind of computer.
As a very happy Mac user myself, I feel this temptation, but it must be
resisted. Macs are getting increased scrutiny as their numbers go up.
I'm especially concerned about client-side vulnerabilities on the Mac,
including Safari and Mail:App, which haven't gotten nearly as much
scrutiny as IE, Firefox, and Outlook. Keep your Macs patched, and
practice safe computing from them.]
We recently received a proof-of-concept sample of an adware program. Normally that wouldn't be worth blogging about, but in this case it's for Mac OS X. In theory, this program could be silently installed to your User account and hooked to each application you use… and it doesn't require Administrator rights to do so. We won't disclose the exact technique used here, it's a feature not a bug, but let's just say that installing a System Library shouldn't be allowed without prompting the user. Especially as it only requires Copy permissions. An Admin could install this globally to all users.
The result: This particular sample successfully launched the Mac's Web browser when we used any of a number of applications.
This is easier to do than with Windows. After all, it's a Mac.
