*Presenting Slashdot for PTT, Issue 1 : Let's see how many responses this gets "below your current threshold".*
Ubuntu Linux 6.10, aka "Edgy Eft", just came out. If you've seen me on TT recently, you know I'm excited about it, seeing as I'm playing under the screenname "Edgy Eft". But forgetting that explanation for a second, what's new?
-FireFox 2.0 (FIRST Linux distro to use FFX2, by the way...) with RSS support, spell-checking, and other features
-GNOME 2.16, which is supposed to be a huge improvement
-Full support for the Compiz 3D desktop (Vista beta-testers, prepare to have your minds blown)
-Support for the Xen virtualization system
-A REALLY fast boot thanks to a new init system called Upstart
People know it's out, and they're downloading it like crazy. I'm trying to upgrade my 6.06 system right now, but the servers are getting so many hits that my broadband connection is slowing down to 56k speeds. On both of my computers. Scary.
EDIT: Speaking of FFX2: Even if you don't have Linux, download it.

Just installed it last night and did all the updates.

Firefox 2.0 is really nice, much faster than 1.5. I only tried the new gnome for a little while I was downloading XFCE. I noticed no difference. Compiz/Beryl and XGL just plain rocks. I gotta figure out how to enable it again though.

The machine boots up and shuts off very fast now, and even faster once I disabled a few startup things.

I don't see much of a difference other than performance and a few new graphical changes, but it is enough for me.

Yes I just threw edgy on one of my partitions and did the automatix update. Very nice so far, impressive. Nice thing about it is that people can just download and throw in cd/dvd player in windows and anyone can check it out :).

Isn't it illegal? Wait, if it was illegal, the AX dev team would have left it out.

Just got XGL and Beryl installed. Man that is wicked cool stuff. I love the virtual desktop box!

But for some reason I have no window borders. When it is on.

dpkg: parse error, in file /var/lib/dpkg/available, near package "cpio", line 2: value for "status" field not a llowed in this context.

Any suggestions? I tried using dpkg --configure -a --force-all, and still nothing.

Backup your stuff from the shell since you don't have X. Then go download and burn a ISO of 6.10. Install fresh. Works for me every time. I only did the apt-get dist-upgrade once and it resulted in a messed up system, so I don't bother with it anymore.

I followed these directions and didn't have any probs.

Users of Kubuntu 6.06 LTS can upgrade to 6.10 over the internet by following these instructions:

NOTE: This procedure upgrades your system over the Internet, which requires a large download of several hundred megabytes.
In Konqueror go to /etc/apt, right click on sources.list and choose Actions -> Edit as Root
Change all instances of dapper to edgy
Launch a console with KMenu -> System -> Konsole
In the console run: sudo apt-get update
In the console run: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and follow the prompts to upgrade
In the console run: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop python-qt3 python-kde3 ubuntu-minimal and follow the prompts to install
Reboot your computer
If you have a Kubuntu 6.10 CD, put it in the drive, and run apt-cdrom from the command line. Then follow the instructions above.

^^ I tried that. My CD refuses to boot. When I put it in, it says "Boot from CD:" for 3 minutes on end, and then goes into GRUB. It does this with my Kororaa and Mandriva One CDs, too.
^ I tried that, too, to poor results. But maybe it would work better, since the upgrade tool might have messed up DPKG.

...If you don't know what LINUX is, you have no business posting here.

Okay DJ, a couple suggestions:

1. Make sure you have your CD drive set as the first boot device.

2. If you still can't boot try burning another copy at a very slow speed (probably 4x).

And definitely don't do apt-get dist-upgrade, apparently tons of people are having problems with that.

I guess I'm not the only one having trouble upgrading. The upgrade forums are jammed, and now the real Slashdot has an article on it! This is big. The Ubuntu upgrade team screwed up big, again (remember when they put up a broken X Windows upgrade?).

I always do fresh installs. They always come out clean.
