The place where I work was robbed last night. They came in through a window and stole the big TV (thankfully they moved my my toy tank collection off the TV and onto the desk before they swiped it), video equipment, some laptops and toys that a co-worker had kept here. Insurance will cover everything, but we're not sure about the toys (which are hard to find popular, remote contolled cars). The police were here this morning, but I don't know if they'll have much luck in tracking the dude(s) down.

The funny thing is, outdated or faulty equipment was stolen. The TV was great with a VCR & DVD built in, but they forgot the remote. The mini-DV video camera was having recording problems and they left the mini-DV deck (fortunately the good camera was at a co-worker's house). They took old laptops while leaving the touch screen, tablet PCs in their docking stations. No printers, fax machines, or desktops were stolen, but they took a bag of extension cords and a wireless mic system. They went through all the drawers, but left the petty cash alone.

They took their time, but it still seems like they didn't know what they were taking. Stupid crooks.

There is motion-detecting surveillance software for Mac that is only $50. There must be similar software for PC. The price on this type of stuff has come down ten-fold in the last 10 years.

I use it for keeping an eye on my unprofessional landlord. I use an old greyscale quickcam with an ancient Mac IIci in my bedroom and a hidden night-vision Sony camcorder via firewire in my living room.

If you use it at work you might even find out why the coffee tastes funny sometimes. ;)

In an unrelated story....
I "lost" my remote for my VCR/DVD combo unit.... Anyone know where I can buy a replacement? Also, I am selling a mini DV camera, a few old laptops (minus the docking stations), and I have a grab-bag of cords....

(just kidding).

Sorry to hear about the theft Rabby..... It really sux having someone invade your space and rifle through your stuff.....

@ BC

Man you are prepared for everything aint ya?

@ Rab

Sorry to hear about that...no crook is a smart crook (unless of course you watch a movie like james bond or entrapment or something totally out of the usual). It was probably a bunch of kids who want to trade the stuff in for drug money or something...buncha punks...

Sorry to hear about the theft Rabby. Getting robbed is no fun, even if everything taken is easily replaceable.

When I was younger living at home, our apartment got robbed twice. I remember how it felt as if it were yesterday. There is definitely a feeling of invasion and a sort of creepiness, to think that some stranger broke into your private spaces and went through alll your personal stuff. The only difference here is that it was an office space, not a home, but I imagine the feeling is similar.

My commiserations Rabby. It's a horrible thing to have happen to you......

About 9 years ago someone tried to steal my bike. I had only had it 12 days from new. It was a Suzuki RF600 and I took out a loan for £6000 to buy it. The bastard levered the bars until the steering lock snapped, chipping the tank at the same time, before the alarm went off. It was 1.30am and I had just gone to bed, but luckily it was a hot night and I had the bedroom window open, otherwise I might not have heard it. The guy ran off and was never caught. It cost another £110 to get a new lock fitted. It was my first new bike and I was very proud of it, but it never felt quite the same again. It still annoys me now when I think of it.

@Pest, THAT really sucks.

@All - Since it was at work, I'm not taking it too personally. We figure a couple of "good ole boys" broke in and picked up what interested them. They weren't very computer savvy, otherwise they would have gotten the good stuff. Perhaps they'll be just as dumb when they try to pawn the items.

It does bother me that the toys were stolen since "mom" doesn't know what she's going to do. They don't have the money to buy another round of Christmas gifts for their two boys and IF the insurance covers their theft, she won't be able to find the same toys. They're $80 ea. And out of stock (at least at Wal-mart).

She had been so proud and happy that she had been able to get two of them before they had run out at the store. This morning there were tears in her eyes.

Stealing toys...man that's low! :(

About 10 years ago, at my very first "real" job, we noticed about noon or so that the air conditioning was doing a poor job of keeping up with the days rising temperature. We kept turning the air up higher and higher ( setting the temp lower) and still felt toasty inside.

Someone complained to the boss and he asked me to look out the window to see if the fan was blowing on the unit outside. ( The outsiside unit was about the size of a mini cooper0. I looked outside and saw only a concrete pad and a large, freshly cut electrical conduit.

Turns out that the electrical box had been jimmied open and the fuse pulled. The AC Unit was then picked up and hauled off. The police said that it was probably installed into some place under construction by unscrupulous contractors or someone building their own place and wanting to save about 10 grand.

Thieves blow.

My wife works at Wal-mart I can look into it to see if she can find any if needed. Sorry to hear about this, please tell her my heart ackes for her.

@ ALL
I am not a X-mas person at all and have not been since I was 10 years old.
It was 2 days before X-mas and all the presents where under the tree. My step dad took us out for a very nice dinner and when we returned from dinner all was gone and I do mean everything. Presents,T.V.,VCR, Stereo, computer and my coin collection my Great Great Grandfather gave to me which by now would of been worth a couple of million. I had 2 stone coins from the Roman era in that collection. I do my best around this time of year to hide how much I hate X-mas so my kids can enjoy it ! To this day I can still remeber the look on my parents face when we came home and found we had been robbed ! :[

@ TG

This is the remote that I Use . Before buying a universal remote though check around for the compatibility and make sure that it fits your devices. I have had this remote for over a year, and never had a problem with it. But, remember to make sure that it can communicate with your components.

I am sorry for all your losses. I may be an ass here, but it is wrong to mess with people in the real world. May you all be blessed this holiday season.

P.S. If the moderators are paying attention they will delete this nice post as they have with other nice posts I have made.

@ enigma

This is a video game played over the internet. What part of this is not real to you?

@Rabban
Man, that really sucks. Im sure you might be able to get it from Toys-R-Us or an online store. But still, who would leave all the good stuff, and take christmas presents? Sounds like "The Grinch". Who else is a possible suspect? "Mr. Scrooge, court is now in session."
