Page : <1> :

Hey guys.

I'm not sure if any of you have heard or seen article and news about it but scientists are fearing the worst.

As you all might know, Yellowstone is a super volcano located in Oregon. About 700,000 years ago, it used to be a massive volcano by itself, but around 640,000 years ago, it erupted violently and forced the volcano to collapse, forming a massive caldera we see today that we call Yellowstone national park. Almost 3/4 of that park, right under it, is a huge volcano vent. When it did erupt 640,000 years ago, almost all the planet was covered in ash. Global winter began, plants died and devistation occured for mother Earth.

Now recently they've been checking up on Yellowstone to see how it is and the ground as swollen up indicating a rise in magma pressure. Earthquakes have increased under Yellowstone and they've even found a new vent forming right under the former vent that collapsed that many years ago.

They've said it's overdue for an eruption, and should Yellowstone blow it's top once again, global devistation will occure.

What are your insights on Yellowstone? Will it blow soon or no? And the devistation it could make.

Do you want to be banned, Tant?

Anyway, will the Yellowstone supervolcano erupt any time soon? Hard to say. No one can really predict when it's going to erupt until it starts making some true signs of an eminent eruption. And even then, it's hard to say what kind of eruption it will be. All we know is that it is growing and it is a big volcano capable of plenty of damage.

I first heard about this last year at school while in geography, Its quite worrying that its OVERDUE to ERUPT, thats means it could ERUPT anytime, it could ERUPT in 5 minutes, 5 Years. We dont know.

Thats what I find worrying, and if it does blow, NO MORE TT

Bwahaha! Did you see the science predictions of it blows? Mini-recreation of the dinosaur eradication they say...

And tanty, spawning is random. I'm sure Art or Chilled will come and explain it to you.

Scientists warn of supervolcano that could blot out the Sun and bring a global winter

"There's nowhere to hide from the effects of a supervolcano. When one goes off it will be like a nuclear winter without the radiation,"

By Steve Connor, Science Editor

Geologists will warn MPs today of the threat posed by a supervolcanic eruption that could devastate the global climate, disrupt agriculture and cause severe food shortages.

Senior members of the Geological Society are to give evidence to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, claiming that a massive eruption could emit enough gas, dust and debris into the atmosphere to block out sunlight and cause a global "volcanic winter".

"Given the climatic impact of volcanic eruptions... And the likelihood of future eruptions, the society recommends that the committee investigate the extent to which the Government has explored the agricultural, economic and political consequences of volcanic winters," the Geological Society says in its written submission.

Geologists are particularly concerned about so-called "supervolcanoes", which can erupt with a force powerful enough to eject thousands of cubic kilometres of debris and hundreds of thousands of tons of sulphuric acid, which can form a reflective shield, cutting out sunlight.

Historical records of eruptions big enough to have a global effect show they are more common than many people imagine and have had a serious impact on human existence.

"For example, a powerful eruption of the Indonesian volcano Tambora in 1815 was followed by one to two years of unusually cold climate around the world," the society says. "In Europe, annual mean temperatures were 1°C to 2.5°C lower than normal, harvests were late or failed altogether, grain prices were at their highest and famine was widespread."

Tambora measured seven on the eight-point volcanic explosion index. The explosion in 1991 of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines was 10 times smaller, registering six points on the index, which was 10 times bigger than the five-point explosion in 1980 of Mount St Helens in the United States.

Bill McGuire, professor of geohazards at University College London and a member of the society's board, said many supervolcanoes are not typical hill-shaped structures but huge, collapsed craters called calderas that are filled with hot magma and are harder to detect. One potentially dangerous supervolcano exists under Yellowstone National Park in the United States and was only detected in the Sixties when infra-red satellite photographs revealed a magma-filled caldera 70km long and 30km wide.

The Yellowstone supervolcano has erupted regularly over the past 2 million years at intervals of about 600,000 years. The last time was about 640,000 years ago, making another eruption "imminent" in geological time.

A Horizon documentary to be broadcast tonight on BBC2 reveals that one of the biggest eruptions, 74,000 years ago at Toba in Sumatra, may have pushed man to the brink of extinction. Toba, which is estimated to have been a maximum eight-point explosion, caused a volcanic winter lasting several years and reduced the population to a few thousand, resulting in a genetic "bottleneck" that can be observed in our genes today.

"There's nowhere to hide from the effects of a supervolcano. When one goes off it will be like a nuclear winter without the radiation," Professor McGuire said.

Anybody here in the US feel like walking in two feet of ash?

Have a read at the Yellowstone United States Geological Survey... http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs100-03/

Very interesting stuff, but HARDLY worth any of the doom and gloom posted above.

I don't know...it's gotten pretty worried ever since I heard about it.

They say that it's unperdictable when it blows. It could be a bright sunny day. You're having a good day and than you feel earthquakes underneath you and than suddenly you hear a giant explosion. You think a nuke bomb went off cause of it's sheer shockwave and sound that was exhausted by the volcano.

Toba super volano, in Sumatra Indonesia, the tragic sight of that the root of the earthquake that caused the tsuanmi's is the main target the scientists are looking at right now. Why? Because they've found out that the earthquake was generated at the heart of the super volcano that went down 75,000 years ago. Toba's eruption 75,000 years ago was bigger than the great Yellowstone eruptions.

I hope the super volcanoes do not erupt. Mass devistation will occur. Imagine waking up to a cloud of ash in the sky. No sun, dead plants, black sky and the sound of a roaring volcano erupting violently in the distance. I would just end my life right there Lol.

It's very terrifying. For me it's my worst nightmare since I fear Volcanoes as it is. So much for super volcanoes.
