Gday all

My internet provider is offering faster connection plans.
Currently all I could get was ADSL 256K up 64K down.
Now they are offering up to 8M up...

However whenever I download anything the max download speed I can get is around 24 - 30K.
Does this mean if I go to the higher speed plan I will still only get 24 - 30K? This makes sense to me.

I cant get any sense out of them. I reckon they are trying to rip me off.
It might work in the city but up here where I am is pretty remote and I would have thought there would have to be some major upgrades in their equipment in my area to be able to improve service.
As far as I can tell this aint happenen.

Cheers

Well I think you may have those a bit backwards, probably 256k down and 64k up. Downloading stuff to your computer is normally the bigger number and is typically what they have (broadband providers) extra capacity. To jump from 256kbps down to 8Mbps down is HUGE, I would be all over that like flies to sh....or depending on the price :). It would be interesting to see what your "up" rate would jump too, 64kbps is pretty pathitic. Thats not much better than a 56k dial up. If you are using dsl they must have fixed/upgraded a hub near your home to start offering that. I would seriously look into it.

Your internet browsing experience would be improved and you wouldn't have to wait for things like streaming video. It might not do a damn thing for your TT experience though, except that depending on your upload capacity you might be able to host games.

The picture would be upside down for us though so I doubt if many of us upsiders would play on your server. 8o

Good point BC the interobality of the polar realiengment may turn things upside down when serving. I forgot about that, woudl be interesting to see.

Yeah but what I was getting at was - if I can only DL at 28K on a 256K service will I still only get 28K on a better plan?

Why can I only get 28K out of a possible 256K?

256 Kbits = 31.25 KBytes So you're getting 90% (28/31.25) of the stated speed. You have to allow some % for "overhead" so if you show 28 KB/s that's normal.

Damn those computer geeks anyway. ;)

[EDIT] I'm pretty sure there has to be fiber optic or at least coaxial cable involved to offer 8 Mb service.

Try it. Usually they offer 1 free month or so; or talk to the phone rep and ask for a free month try-out, so you can compare.
Amazing what you can get simply by asking.
