There's this icon that's ALWAYS popping up about a 1394 missing / broken connection. After doing a bit of research, I found out that this was my firewire port. Ok, so here's my scenario:

I have regular ol' DSL. My modem ( black Westell ) has an ethernet port and a USB B port. If I were to find a cable that connects the USB to 1394 port in the back of my comp., would I be able to achieve greater internet speed? I hear FireWire can go average of 400 Kb/s , which would be 4x more than my regular DSL!

Short answer: no.

Firewire can transfer up to 400 M bps(megabits). A good cable connection can give you only 5 Mbps and a good DSL 1.5 Mbps.

I've been running my Internet conncetion through my garbage disposal. It's like a ISP turbo charger.

Don't know what my connection is, but I just got a sweet new Dell from QVC shopping channel and the internet connection has never been better! I called them up to give Dell a plug.

Great computer.

That's pretty much what I'm going to use mine for too.
