Howdy all,
I have a question that has been lurking in my mind for three plus years:
Is it ok to shoot the lead tank before it gets to the scrum?
I've always waited until the scrum sits up on top of a tank before blasting away.
Lately, when playing indie scrum I've been getting blasted while I am miles away from the flag although I am the "lead" tank or first in line to get the scrum.

I have been so upset at some of the newbs out there for doing this.

Who's right and who's wrong?

Why don't you ask Rush?

:p

^ XD
44, Rush shoots first and asks questions later.
Really, back in the day it was verboten to shoot the lead tank until it touched the scrum.

That's the way I like it, but who cares about a hillbilly?

Indie scrum is regular scrum.

In indie scrum, if there is a race to the scrum, I'll hold fire until we near the scrum, then the tank closest to the scrum is my target. I've been shot at several times when I'm going to be the first to the scrum. It doesn't really bother me like the senseless BM'ing away from the scrum. In team scrum, when a smoking scrum carrier tries passing to a healthy teammate, you start shooting the healthy tank, right? You are trying to damage or take out the next scrum carrier before they can start running with the scrum. It is kind of the same thing in indie scrum, take out the next scrum carrier. Not the tank closest to you but the one closest to the scrum.

I shoot the smoking tank before it hits the teammate so it will bump him and make him lose the scrum.

Pray to GOD for him to reveal himself to you.

Shoot if you can handle being shot back.

You don't have to let go of one rope before grabbing the other. But you'll have to let go of one if you want to swing forward.

I think it depends on the crowd, and your proximity to the goal. If the flag is on the other end of the map, and you're near me, I'll lay off until you get it. If you're near the goal, you're going down.

Hey man if im shooting at you when you dont have the scrum its not becaused I have bad aim its most likley im pissed off at you for something,or its just im trigger happy and I got an itchy trigger finger and its 'a twitchin. %)

Let me make myself more clear.
If I am racing for the ball, flag, scrum (not the goal) do you shoot at the first player in line for the scrum before he catches it or do you wait until he does.
I say wait, because it was an old school rule and also makes the games more interesting.

I guess this thread is as good as an old goat on my part.

If they are shooting you just turn around drive backwards and shoot back. XD

I wait until the last second before the lead tank gets to the scrum to start unloading ammo on them. Seems more sporting to me :)

Monday, November 06, 2006 at 7:46:36 PM

I personally wait till its on top their tank, my mind shows good sportsmanship, only at times like where goal is right next to scrum will I shoot lead runner

Although relatively new to Scrum, I would never shoot until the Scrum Ball is on top of the tank. ;)

^ Yeah same.
& I'm really tired of ppl shootin you before you are the scrum carrier : thats why I rarely get in scrum servers...
My old friends LONEWOLF , wOOt & hakko teaches me last year as I began to play : 'never shoot before the tank carry the scrum'...

In consequences if you dont apply this rule :
-some of tank always wait in the 2nd line : only shoot others & take the scrum just before the goal. (I understand them : who want to be massacred in less than 1.5sec. ?)
-it tooks years to score (I've seen games w/ only 4 goals in 20 minutes !!) 'cause it looks like a hunt party
-if you play fair you almost never score : ow many time have I been (& seen some players) the scrum carrier : running half of the plate & be killed before scoring ? & respawning on the other side ???.....

So OoFfa : we played ggod games in indy ;)

@ players who dont respect this rule : stay in your mess servers : I prefer joining BM or TBM : there I know why I am shoot !!

I've wondered about this question myself. Thanks for bringing it up, KKB. It did seem in the past that if you were not carrying the scrum, you weren't the target until you got the scrum. You'd get bot shot, but only because they try to shoot the scrum.

It hasn't been that way for a while in many servers, and I'm guilty of shooting the one closest to the scrum. I stopped waiting because so often I'd be all smoked up by the time I could get to the ball. I've stopped trying so hard to get the scrum first because of it.

The game does play better if you wait. Let someone get to the ball before blasting away. I thought I was the only one who played that way, so I switched.

I'll rethink my strategy, and go back to the way it was in the past. I'll wait until they get the scrum, and apologize for excessive usage of ammo.

EDIT- I will, however, blast away if the scrum is near the goal. Good point, Memphis.

No.. You hang back and sly-ly plant clips in everyone so everyone stays smokey while you're sitting with full health. Then, when the scrum starts to near the goal you destroy everyone within range, take the ball for yourself and bathe in the shower of abuse and points.

If the guy in lead has full health then I'll shoot once or twice. But if their smoking bad then I'll wait to gun the down. But if its one of those cases where the scrum is right next to the gaol and the lead tanker is obviously going to score I'll try to gun them down.

Veteran players know the difference between naughty and nice. Personally, I prefer to play nice, regardless of how everybody else is playing. A "clean" goal is more satisfying than a "dirty" goal, IMO.
The only situation where I think it's OK to light up someone eles's butt is when only 2 of you are running to the ball near the goal, and waiting to shoot them would result in an obvious freebie.

Often I start shooting the opponent three tank lengths behind the scrum, no matter how close the goal is, unless its just me and another person.

I hate when that happens also KKB, so what I started doing is what I saw Magenta do one day, I believe he had had enough of getting his butt shot off before he got the scrum. So what I saw him do is slam on the brakes and as the dude shooting him from behind swept past, Mag lit that boy uuuuuuuuuup!! It took 2 or 3 times but he got the hint. I agree with the way the old timmers play, waiting unless it's an obvious freebie.

Great post KKB, even tho your a damn republican!!

^Not Republican, just voting that way this round.

Yes, in regards to Magenta's tactic I do it as well.

If you have a clear run to the goal and are the lead guy to the scrum then it would make sense to kill as fast as possible.
If the goal is on the other side of the map then no, it would be cheap, and useless, to fight over it instead of tailing and trying to steal.
Alot of others shoot all the time to keep you softened any way. Even the bots shoot at the scrum & the lead tank prior to pick up.
No matter how the others do it, it always seems the same people are able to out score the others.

Even though I do insert some CheeZ %) into each goal, its just about being as slippery as soap :P

You could try shooting directly at the scrum ball right before the other guy gets it. That way if he does get the flag he's shot right at the same moment. Clean and clever.
