Hey computer geeks! This hillbilly needs some help. Trying to find the reasons for my recent troubles on TT. Could it be my system is too antiquated?

It is an HP 523n : 512mb, amd athalon xp 1.8ghz, 80GB ram. Bought it 4 years ago.

Thanks, KKB

It should be fine, mine is 5 yrs old and is still plodding along...It could be your graphics card.
What exactly are your troubles?

Make sure it isn't loaded up with dust again.

Also might be worth doing a check for viruses and spyware.

MJ

Scan for adware/spyware like 56k suggested. Be sure to scan a couple of times and use different applications (Adaware, Spybot, Microsoft's anti-spyware (still in beta?). A cleanup up of temporary and unneeded files followed by a defrag of the hard drive can also help improve performance. You might check for a new driver for your graphics card. If you're feeling brave, turn off services you are not using, at least during your TT time. It might free up CPU cycles and will free up a little memory.

Sounds like its overheating
Get a can of compressed air at Staples or Office depot and really clean the Heatsink thoughly
Get inbetween the fins and and also blow out the powersupply and your video card

On the software end get AdAware at Lavasoft.com (free for single user)
Make sure no file sharing programs are running (Kazaa - Morpheus - etc)
Another thing to check is your system tray - its on the right side of the bottom bar and has the clock in it
Try to turn off unneccessary or redundant programs that run in this tray
This resource is of a limited nature and if too many things run there it will effect general operation
So stay away from web- based applications that run in the tray. IE Weather Bug etc

Uh I am assming that you are running some type of antivirus and that its up to date and also
that Automatic updates is turned off?

^I recently purchased super ad popup blocker. It does it all from spyware to viruses to pop up ads. Has worked really well. I sometimes get a message from microsoft regarding a device driver that is interfereing with things as well. Many thanks to you all!! :)

Wait, ROO, you said something about automatic updates? I always try to keep it on. Thanks.

If those don't work. Get a mac, throw linux on the old computer and make it a server. Well thats what I would do.
