Sorry PGG, I couldn't resist the title.

Problems:
1. About a minute after I open the terrain editor in TGE, it just...freezes up. The cursor won't move, nothing. I have to just "end task" to close it.
2. I installed Python DTS exporter in just about every directory and subdirectory in the Blender folder. It still doesn't work.
3. When I download XPack or Mod_Pack, I always end up getting this little bugger:

4. I can't get into any mods with new shapes. After "loading objects", TT just closes with no warning or error message. It just dies. Plus my server gives people a "ThinkTanks has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." when they try to join.

Does anyone have a solution to any of these problems?

Mon, Cant help with you it does not wor problem but I can tell you that Blender is hard to get the exporter working I could never do it but it obviously does because people are using it. Its over spec for TT anyway use this instead its free for 30 days and got the dts exporter built in so you can export the object in 2 secs. Milkshake

Blender is hard to use... It took me 3 weeks to figure out the exporter, now I have to figure out how to pit a skin on the object!
Its all working at least...
Sorry mon, I suggest re-installing

^ No burrito on that one, if I get enough money I will buy a Dell PC. ;)

^, ^^ I finally made an object! Simple, but it's an accomplishment for me: :P

Nice one Mon, the first one is always the hardest. Oooo Dell love em I use a full (and I mean full) spec XPS Gen 4, lovely piece of kit B)

Have you noticed yet that when using 3D programms you have to think in a completely different way to usual 2D programms? It took me a little while to get used to it but once you do things become clearer.

I have been evaluating a few 3d programms over the last few weeks in order to choose one to fully learn, here are my thoughts:

1--- Maya --- The professional choice and very expensive. Is supported with a dts exporter (up to version 6) and lots of info on GG forums, but probably way over spec for making TT objects - but an un beleivable programme, friendly to use with endless options and tools. Seems to be more of a commercial product, used by Pixar amungst others. Not much free stuff avaliable on the net.

2--- 3d Studio Max --- Again a professional 3D programme and fairly expensive as well. Plenty of informmation on GG forums and has a dts expoorter up to version 8. Lots of free stuff avaliable including models, plugins and tutorials. This seems to be on a par with Maya and a very popular programme across many markets and user types.

3--- Blender --- The best thing about Blender is its free and is similar to the above 2 programms. But not for me, the user interface is to small and I found it complicated to use. The dts exporter seems to be a bit of a pig, however there are quite a lot of sites with tutorials and info on but not many with free models. Amazon also sells a series of Blender books which according to what I have read are a must own if you choose this programme

4--- Milkshake --- Probally the simpliest out of all to use and ideal for making TT objects. Comes with a built in dts exporter that is so easy to use without having to set up cameras and lighting etc, infact its a bit like saving a word document!!! Lots of really good easy to follow tutorials for modeling and skinning. Milkshake is free for 30 days and only $25.00 to own after that, absolute bargin if you ask me.

So having used and tested the above programms over the last few weeks I have decided to move forward and use 3D Studio Max and Milkshake. As Milk is the easiest and ideal for most TT objects this will be my primary use until I leard 3D Studio Max, Milk also has a 3ds importer so models can be shared between the two programms, how handy is that!!! 3D Studio Max looks good and there is a lot of info on the GG forums to help solve those little problems that are more than likely to occour, I'm really lookin forward to learning the programme. Although Maya is fantastic its a bit over the top for my use and as for Blender personally I will be leaving that well alone. There are a few other 3D tools that are very helpful and compliment the two programms I have chosen to use and I'm in the middle of assessing them at the moment.

Here is a link to the few objects I have made using Milkshake in the last couple of weeks, feel free to use em Objects

Just my thoughts hope it helps

Daz

@ Warfare if you got the dts exporter to work nice #1, please can I have your brain......................

Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 6:00:49 PM

Well...barbell, two rocks, a factory (in which I found out that png skins don't work), a log, and a tree. B)

Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 2:58:47 AM

Very nice you gonna post any screenies? I will be when I finish the stuff I have been working on, but its taking a while and detracting from my play time XD or :[ or :'( I dint know which I should be.....................

*** Rememmber when you export from milk, in the collision mesh settings set a bounding box or cylinder other wise you will be able to drive through the object****

Screenies:

Barbell:

Factory:

Log:

Rock1 (with light added for visibility):

Rock2 (with light added for visibility):

Spike (with light added because I forgot to turn it off):

And finally, the "drive-thru" tree, on which I forgot to put a collision mesh:

Oh, and one more thing: Whenever I enter my own mods, whether with the same copy of TT I am hosting or not, I always get an invalid packet error. Even when I delete the terrain file in the other copy, it just downloads, then gives me an invalid packet.
Do you know what's wrong here?

Thanks.

Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 3:02:26 PM

Hmmm not sure but whenever I have had that message its usually, but not always, the sky.

Really like the rocks, log and spike

OK...here is my entire Mon23.mis file...

There is something wrong with it, but what that something is I can't find...I have looked through the entire sky and terrain datablocks and compared them with Medulla Mesa, and still have found nothing.

Could any battle-hardened scriptor help me, please?

The only suggestion I have is that in the terrain block you have tile = "0"; I have looked throuigh a load of mission files and they all seem to be set to tile = "1";

Thay may help but, not 100% sure but worth a try.

Tile does need to be set to one, I agree wit tat, but that isnt the reason for the invalid packet error, I havnt scripted in a while, but from the looks of this:

You always have

ShapeName = "~ /data/shapes/Monica/log.dts";

And this is what I have

ShapeName = "game /data/shapes/Blue/rockblue03.dts";

Basically the same thing excpet for the wierd dash, only thing that is different from your mod's to mine, are those the exact case sensative capitals and crap with the names of your.dts's?
