I'm surprised that there isn't already a topic about Winter Olympics.

Nobody watching it? I can admit that I haven't been following it very carefully. Sports are great, but for some reason I haven't gotten hooked to it. The sports which I have mainly watched are curling and ice hockey. Both very interesting, thought, from neither one I haven't seen one full game.

Curling is the game of real men. The ultimate sport. I'm rather clueless about the rules of game, but by watching it I have learnt the main rules. I can't believe how it can be so addicting to watch it. Yes, curling is a sport, even thought it can be hard to believe so first. It's placed on ice and the circular flat stones weight close to 20kg! These stones are slid across the surface towards a mark.

Ice hocket is always fun to watch. Also the team of my country seems to be doing good. They have won all the games so far, but the "real" games haven't started yet.

You don't have to let go of one rope before grabbing the other. But you'll have to let go of one if you want to swing forward.

Monday, February 20, 2006 at 9:24:05 PM

I started one... It dies... I am sad.

I have been wathcing the skating mostly, but that is about it. Oh yeah, and making fun of curling people, too.

Pardon my rudeness, I cannot abide useless people.

Monday, February 20, 2006 at 10:45:57 PM

You did? Ah too bad I must have missed it.

I have watched some ice skating too, but probably the funniest is short track. Watching the top three skaters to crash into each others and the 4th skater taking a win. Splendid!

You don't have to let go of one rope before grabbing the other. But you'll have to let go of one if you want to swing forward.

My beef with the games is with NBC. Where's the coverage? Back in the day, that's all the covering network would broadcast, seemlingly 24/7 (and we liked it). Nowdays, its spread over several channels (which I don't get) and NBC focuses on primetime broadcasting. Personally, I think it stinks. I enjoyed the saturation, I mean, its only every 4 years, well, every 2 now, but still...its a big deal. I like being able to turn on the TV at any point in the day and see something Olympic going on. Its just cool.

Otherwise, we've been enjoying the games.

Monday, February 20, 2006 at 11:47:14 PM

The hockey has been excellent Triv. Your boys are doing well. The US team has had some very bad luck. They've been dominating games, until a pretty even Sweden game, and just not putting the puck in the net. They beat Latvia 50-9 on faceoffs and still tied them. Irbe was a brick wall. Two days later he lets up seven goals. Go figure.

If you don't like hockey give Olympic hockey a chance, one period at least. It's absolutely great to watch. The speed! Oh the speed of it.

Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to be on my toes.

Invite a retard to a picnic and you'd better expect to get drool in the potato salad.

The Winter Games have been great. The snowboarding cross was awesome. But it so annoying watching it cause NBC only shows events with Americans in them.

Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 4:09:01 PM

I find the winter games mostly annoying because there are way too many stupid events.
The biathlon? Ski cross country and then shoot a rifle? WTF! Who does that except some mountain men in the alps for survival? Is that a sport? Why doesn't the summer Olympics add this event then, "Swim several laps, then get out and throw some darts"? OOOHHH... Bullseye!!! Then there are all those new half-baked, half-pipe, mogel, aerial, type of snowboarding sky jumping events. Leave those for the X games, please.

The only thing I like about the Olympics, winter or summer, are the touching human stories behind the REAL events.
I love watching someone fulfill a lifelong dream, especially overcoming incredible odds. A good underdog story is also big fun.

I am enjoying the drama in speed skating right now as two Americans go at it today. It's creating a racial divide in the USA right now, sadly enough. I just want an american sweep.

Just for your info Pai , biathlon # 1 rated tv event in winter , to bad it's not popular in USA.
You should see the drama, when France and Sweden were fighting for 3rd place in men's relay , fotofinish was used.
And hockey is amazing this Olympics, just can't wait for play-offs , it's were drama begins :).
Feel sorry for pair from France in ice skating ,but this is life ,tonight you fall ,tomorrow your opponent.
I have a lot of respect for freestyle athletes , you have to have some gods to do what they do.

@Triv
I thought you were pulling our legs with your excitement over the "sport" of curling, but it seems as if you weren't being funny. What is funny is how many people do enjoy watching it! Here are the official rules .

What bothers me is the image of the dude who sweeps the ice with a broom wearing a gold medal. He will put his broom in a display case in his den along with his gold medal and brag "yup...that's right...gold baby!" I mean, you can understand the gold medalist being proud of his victory for skiing down the side of mountain or ski jumping a mile, but to sweep the ice or sliding on the ice with a rock?

What's next? In honor of the success of curling, the summer games will be adding two new sports that are similar:
Bacci Ball

Shuffle board

@ pai for an event to be in the Olympics there has to be
1) a solid cultural background to it.. The baithlon as an example yes it was for survival (also shooting and archery are summer Olympics) Also I would love to see you run just 1 mile and then you shoot a rifle , I'm betting a lot of money you won't even come close to target...(ie if you can't control your breathing)
2) the sport has to have an international body that sanctions (controls) all of its events and makes it fair for all (also Lobbies the olympic commitee to stay in the Olympics)
3) It has to have a difficulty level to it , these athletes are all devoting their lifes to this, they make it seem real easy but it isn't.
4) People that are fans of it

And probably many other criteria I'm sure.

Personnaly I don't like Curling and it's not very popular here in Quebec, but It's an Olympic sport. It is so because Great Britain was once a world power and this is their sport. Also I know a couple of guys that play it and it is very hard to be good and physically still demanding but not as much as weightlifting or cross country skiing. If you ask me I would rather win any event other than curling, lol even figure skating.

Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 4:51:53 PM

Curling rules. Only cerebral event in the Olympics. At least it's not judged like many other of the "so-called" sports. Anything involving judges is not sport. Go faster, throw farther, outscore; that's sport.

Imagine someone judging the aesthetics and positioning of an indy or team scrum game: then I win, every game, hands down. Why? Because I'm pretty. I'm King of the World! I'M A BAAAAAD MAN!

Points given to anyone who can tell me who I'm quoting.

Very disappointed with American figure skater Sasha "Choker" Cohen who can't win the big one.
Michelle Kwan couldn't win the Olympic Gold medal either but at least she won everything else countless times, including the Worlds. Sasha always cracks under pressure. Whatever.

Germany has clinched most medals.

...sting like a bee....

Don't forget to take a swing at Howard Cosell while you say that, Memphis.

As far as the Olympics, I tend to lean toward the "go downhill as fast as you can on a sled" events. I love the bobs, skeleton, and luge. Downhill and GS are good. This time I enjoyed the snoboard cross too.

NBC has ruined the games for me, though. I hate the delay. I live near Canada, so I watch CBC more than NBC for coverage. Like Rabban, I miss the saturation on the NBC feeds. I recall tuning in all the time in 1980 to watch hockey. Everyone knew when to tune in for the live games. (Some were really weird times though... Even though it was in NY)

It seems like there isn't as much interest...

(I see curling from Canada now and again. There's a curling rink just over the border, too. Intriguing game. Every time the Olympics come up, I start to know the rules. Then I forget again. That game is strangely watchable... Cerebral... But what's with all the shouting?)

Great PhotoShop work, dude!

Yeah, I don't understand the shouting. I think it's pretty funny when they do that, even the women. I've been looking for a wintertime sport, and curling looks like it would be a nice change to ice fishing.

Friday, February 24, 2006 at 3:30:19 PM

The shouting reminds me of all the dweebs in Emeril's audience who clap and hoot and holler whenever he dumps a bunch of garlic into a dish and says BAM! They lose their minds when he says, "Another notch!"

Oy vey

Friday, February 24, 2006 at 3:40:39 PM

The shouting is funny, "HAAAARD HAAAARD". But the weirdest shouts came from Chinese women.

That is a fake photo! No way that is real! Curling has not been around THAT long, has it?

Look Wikipedia about curling .

The game was probably invented in late medieval Scotland, with the first written reference to a contest using stones on ice coming from the records of Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire, in February, 1541. --
-- The Royal Montreal Curling Club, the oldest active athletic club of any kind in North America, was established in 1807. The first curling club in the United States began in 1832 --

In earlier days, brooms were made of corn strands and were similar to household brooms. --

Fishing is not a sport. Curling is not a sport. Bowling is not a sport. Darts is not a sport. Nascar is not a sport. Those are hobbies.

You want a new winter hobby? OK, try curling...or competitive snow sculpting.

And don't give me the whole skill/athleticism arguement. Muhammad Ali would laugh at you.

I love the live results feature of the www.torino2006.org website!

Friday, February 24, 2006 at 4:31:14 PM

Snow Sculpting!! Now there's a new trend in winter SPORT. They actually get to use powertools. Anything involving potential loss of limbs = sport.

Bowling, darts and NASCAR? Are you talking to your wife? Has She been hanging out with those gals that she "just connects with"? She'll probably start playing field hockey come spring. It's ok fo. It's just a sport. What she does off the field might be her hobby.

I fand all you who look at figure skaters longingly... Meanwhile, I am skating four times a week, spending hours with girls who have 5 inch skirts on... Only advantage of pairs skating...

And on the figure skating topic- I was so bumbed out when Kimi Meissner got 6th. I was really hoping at leats fourth for her or Emily Hughes. Sasha Cohen is kinda boreing, and she has that weird negative feel about her.

Pardon my rudeness, I cannot abide useless people.

Flawless Finland vs Super Swedes

The ice hockey final is going to be a border battle. The arch-rivals Sweden and Finland faces each others. It can be compared to USA - Canada match. Who would have guessed that? Finland has won seven matches straight and thus are unbeatable. One more win for Finland would crown the full tournament. A must see hockey match.

Last matches were play-off semifinals where Finland outplayed Russia 4 - 0 and Sweden crushed Czechs 7 - 3.

Super Swedes vs Flawless Finland

It was a great game. Respect to the finns for their prowess in hockey. Couldn't be more proud to be a Scandinavian these days.

But what happened to our fellers, the norwegians? Not to mention, the danish?

Sunday, February 26, 2006 at 10:13:28 PM

I'll admit it - I've become a curling fan as well. Been catching as much on TV as I can, and I agree with you, Rabban - I long for the days of 24-hour coverage. It seems like there's enough going on every Olympics to have more than one station going 24 hours a day!

My only gripe: granted, she's cute and all, but how the hell can Sasha Cohen fall twice and still get the silver, when Jeret "Speedy" Peterson barely drags two fingers on the ground after pulling off his awesome Hurricane freestyle aerobatics move and places 7th?!? I thought judging for Olympics skating just got overhauled after the Salt Lake City scandal... Or was it just a whitewash?

Monday, February 27, 2006 at 2:06:20 AM

Super games for Canada, we got 24 medals , country objective was 25. Also keep in mind we got 13 athletes that placed 4 overall and 8 athletes that placed 5. So it look's good for the next ones. I really enjoyed them and my wife and I are going to Vancouver for 2010 winter Olympics to see those, it's going to be super.

Ps I even liked the curling win of the mens team. Also the figure skating was impressive, those girls are gorgeous, fit, and hot. ;)

I also liked the curling games. It's sort of an arcane sport to me. But, while watching it, these two thoughts/questions came to my mind:

1. Many a time, I really thought... Hell, why don't someone just pick the damn stone and throw it? Yes, throw, not sliding. As in chucking the metal ball in the hammer throw events for instance. Instead, they insist on making these foolish little slides that gently screws the stones in between the others. If I'd had been there, I'd had used the stone crusher method of grabbing the damn stone in both hands, shoving it all over the ice. And if it would have strucked any stones in its way, they'd have been obliterated completely. That's the way you do it. You gotta give the audience lots of more action, if you want to make this sport more accesible to a wider audience.

2. Why on earth do they test the players for doping?? I mean, is it that likely they'll find some smarty guy using anabola stereoids in this sport, is it? 8o

I was proud of the job my home country Italy did with hosting the Winter games. Seems as if everything went very well (not nearly as commercial as the Atlanta games and shockingly no bombings or tragedies!)!!

As for the highlights of the torino games that will be remembered?

The Scandinavian Hockey final... I was pulling for the smaller Finland to beat their arch rival Sweden, oh well.

The total wipe out of Bode "Grodie" Miller who went oh for 5 and still said he "rocked" the olympics. Yeah, you rocked all right pal. Too bad they don't give out medals for drinking and womanizing, if so you would've had the most!

Apollo Ohno finally winning a clean gold medal to finish his career (still the 2nd most over-hyped American athlete, next to Bode).

Germany winning the most golds and overall medals again, edging the USA once again (29-25, 35-34 in Salt Lake).

Italy winning 5 golds and 11 total... Including final event.
Italian speedskater Fabris stealing gold from the two idiot Americans who fought the whole games.

Over all, I still think half of the events should be gone. Way too many strange and unknown events or repetitive events. For example, do we REALLY need to have 2 man bobsled AND 4 man bobsled? Same dude won both events. How different is the luge compared to the skeleton???? How many distances does a skier have to travel to prove he/she is the best? Same with speed skating! 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m, etc. Etc. Etc.Argh!!!!

Make it simple. Less is more. Who is the fastest, strongest, who can go the furthest, who is the best. Period.
No more events that rely soley on personal opinions and judging!!! Ice dancing is figure skating with less jumping!!! We get it, you like Russian skaters best. Ok ok...we get it.

Also, no more professionals!!! Give it back to the amateurs!!! This goes for ALL countries!

^^^ looks like he is ready to go bowling, and tractors are the pins...

I'm really looking forward to 2010. Vancouver is about 35 miles from here. Most of the events will be up toward Whistler, but whoa, this should prove to be fun. Some of the terrain would be tremendous for downhill and I'll be checking out the bobsleigh and luge runs. (How much for a trip down?)

Between those gravity events and hockey, I'm looking ahead. (and they're working on speeding up the border crossing by then, too...)

Facts about the future president of Finland; Markku Uusipaavalniemi, Uusis, M-15 aka U-15 who is currently the captain of Finnish curling team.

Nicknames
Markku Uusipaavalniemi is known as "Uusis" in Finland but there are several other names like ylipaviaani, which means "The chief god of all mankind". US Military has designated Uusis as 'M-15' because he can be considered as a great machine of war and therefore needs a military name. The name 'M-15' was given in year 2001 when Uusis threw a curling rock at the Pentagon and some walls collapsed. This incident was covered up with talks about terrorists and plane crashes. The people of Germany call their great submarines U-15 after "Uusipaavalniemi"

- The prime minister of Finland, Matti Vanhanen , looks up to Uusis so much he decided to look just like him.
- God can make a rock so heavy that He can't lift it; but Uusis can still push it into motion on ice.
- Legend has it, that Chuck Norris and Markku Uusipaavalniemi met in the 90's. They stared at each other and there was silence. That was the only time Chuck Norris nodded and walked away. (Two weeks later Markku Uusipaavalniemi fell over as if struck by a round house kick but has claimed it was only a coincidence.)
