Ill add this my my list of reasons why everyone wants to go to saudi arabia.
I love my randylion
The header line on that first linked site is wrong... Dubai is on oil, not crack.
There's enough profit in that $3 gallon of gas to make it past Exxon/Mobil, etc. And all the way across the pond. *checks watch*... Ah, yes, $72/barrel...
So check out the price of oil over the same period as the photos above (note that it is now off the top of the graph):

BTW, the 90's saw the development of a capitalist mode of spending within the Middle Eastern established, elite society. Hence the mist-cooled bikeway, the palm-tree-shaped residential development sticking out into the gulf (see one of the linked aerial photos), etc.
My cousin and her husband and kids have just moved to Dubai from their home in Paris (he's in global finance). Dubai is actually building another big residential development into the gulf (I forget the other shape). These things will quickly erode without a continuous supply of dredged sand to rebuild the coasts. But these folks have the cash to maintain it. And then some, it looks like!

You don't have to let go of one rope before grabbing the other. But you'll have to let go of one if you want to swing forward.
