I'm trying to help t raider with his internet connection. Although his ping is high due to a dial-up connection, it's the stutters and drop-outs that are hurting him the most. When I play against him I can see a very slight unsmoothness which I attribute to the high ping. This unsmoothness doesn't kill the gameplay but the occational stutters and drop-outs do. For instance, the drop-outs can result in a stationary non-visible ghost which you can't drive through.

He's using an internal intel[R] 536EP winmodem on Windows XP. I've read that winmodems (software modems) can tie up your CPU and are therefore not good for gaming. Does anyone know more about this? Does anyone have an external (hardware based) modem they can donate for t raider to try? Could spyware be interfering?

We'd like to get him into Psycho Scrum League X but the stutters and drop-outs we can do without.

If theres a Goodwill nearby that has electronics parts, 56k modems can at times be bought for less than it costs to ship them.

Could be spyware too have him download Microsoft Anti Spyware on the microsoft site if hes running windows. Spyware leeches up on bandwith I should know. Since the first time I ever got spyware years ago. With that tool kiss spyware good bye :)
