The photo is a fake. It's from a Photoshop contest on Fark. It's not from 1954.

The photo was created in 2004. It's a joke that a lot of people took seriously. That's all.

Sorry to be the one to burst the bubble. It's a very good fake. It really does remind me of a lot of old pictures in Popular Science and the like.

For what it's worth, a whole lot of other people thought it was real too. That's why it made Snopes.
