I was goofing around in Paint and came up with this electric pattern for GIMP. It is continous, so don't worry about open ends. The background is also transparent, so you can use it to partially overlap parts of your tank skin without covering up too much.
Here's the lava pattern (blitzer's request)
WARNING: The lava pattern is NON -TRANSPARENT, it will overlap anything you put it over! If you want a transparent version, just mess around with the colors in the electric pattern.
