My new connection is 10.5mbits down and 1mbit up. Im pretty centrally located and I think I can host if im not playing.

My ideas so far:

-an indie bm server for demos (and those who play indie bm)
-a frantic stock TS server (remember fieldofscreams)
-a vintage mm mod TS server (old baarnyard)
-a NONLUSH TBM server (ive always wanted to play NOT on the same dang maps all the time)

I opt for the Non-lush TBM with 8 player slots. Why:
-The other three are pretty much already in use (MM mods are usually mixed in the Scrumbag rotation during non-PSL times).
-As you say, the are not enough TBM servers with mods on them.
-8 slots means minimal lag.

Just a camper's thoughts on some regular TBM action.

I already sometimes host a random map TBM with 8 slots...but another would be ok. When I get a new comp, I can have a full-time one up.

Personally, I would like an all-stock maps indy BM...
Perhaps we could have one that's just lush, and one that rotates.

I agree with ^^ it would be nice to have a TBM server with a rotation of modified maps. For me they could be lush mods, it doesn't really matter.

I would just make sure that the maps didn't favour just the lights and vice-versa.

Scrum (Lush) bigtime. Its the most popular game, and we have ONE SERVER. Foget about stupid battlemode, the have everything!!

Unless the server is on Linux with great pc and connection, it seems very few will gather and stay. Dash and Roo have the market cornered with great service. If your server is equally as good for alot of players, possibly it can be a good hangout too. XD

How about a TS server rotating with a good variety (say 20 or so) of classic mods and a few stock maps.

Thanks for starting this thread and offering up your services Bolo. I've been meaning to solicit the same information ever since I got 10/1 cable. In addition to covering the basic server needs I thought it might be fun to have a weekly or monthly player's choice server or showcase a particular modder of the week or month.

It would be cool to have some servers with jacked up settings and passwords for players who have adequate computers with jacked up settings. It seems to have improved PSL this season. I hate to be exclusionary but I think its time to have the option available. There may be as many players opting out of laggy games due to laggy players as there are laggy players.

I've seen league play suck up a maximum of 600 Kbps (with the jacked up settings) and 30% of a 1.67 GHz G4 processor. At normal settings an 8 player game can use 256 Kbps and up to 10% processor.

I tried running three games on the same computer once and my PSL team complained of lag. Even though the other games where empty my team said they noticed the difference after I took them down. Because of this I have since assumed that running one game per computer is optimal. Nuts and I have run servers using rediculously low powered computers without lag, so except for league games I assume any computer will do. Linux and then Mac OS seem to be better for serving than Windows.

I've been collecting old Macs to use for servers. One of these weeks I'll make it to the university surplus sale to get some old PCs to use as Linux servers. There ought to be plenty of "throw-away" PCs by now that would make great servers.

Bo - a few goodies you should have in the admin tools:

The "/pre" command so you can gently redirect loaders.
Dash also has several recent innovations that are really nice, like: "/max" for changing the max # players, and the "/lock" and "/unlock" commands for challenges/matches.

I really like variety and a good ordering of maps in a rotation. Remember when we used to do all 12 stock maps in order? You would go through a full hour of frantic and then a full hour of spooky and then <BAM!> Lush would roll around and your eyes would be blasted with a blinding flash! Those full hours had distinct moods. Was cool.

How bout a lil bit of everything??! XD

@CB- Exactly the reason for 8 slots. :P Also a good idea to keep the 'crowding' down.

@Cadc- I like that, ehe. We have a lot of indy scrum now. But I would love to see an indy on all stock maps go up. If Roos or Scrumbag were to include frantic and spooky in their rotation (leaving out lush), it would make for a good integration.

@Bolo- A thought just dawned on me. What about CTF?... Like the good old days, lol. If you were to get all stock maps CTF, with -z-'s maps, it would be great, with dash or ArtCrazy codes installed. What say you all?

Hey! Would be awesome to have a Freebie server, for freebie practice. An online QuickPlay could be fun too, battling bots.., Multiplayer Target Practice would be awesome too - players not scoring goals in TS could automatically be sent there.

I think TS is running fine with Dash and Roos. The indie scrum worry me, re. Lack of access for demos. Anyway is there new people joining/buying the game? BT, what's the word? A different TS rotation would be heavenly that for sure. All hail Bolo! Joining the exalted club of divine hosts!

I think I want to try to run mods that we have been scrumming on forever that have never seen any TBM. I know that the spawn points are not designed right for some of them so im prepared for trial and error. Once I have a decent list im gonna write a simple program to randomly load a map. I think I have access to the monkeemods, dash and wiztriv mods. Roo, nappy and crap wrote a lot of good league bm maps THAT MOST PEOPLE HAVE NEVER SEEN that id like to host pending their permission.

What I infer is that TS and stock TBM is covered. Indie bm supports GG which im not interested in doing, and indie scrum has MI banlist. CTF I cant host due to non disclosure agreements.

My intent here is not to compete with dash or roo for a good server. I just want to offer something we dont already have. I may have to cap it at 8 people. Depends on the map. Time will tell. Bear with me til I get this figured out.

The quickest way to check out the spawn points that I can think of. Is to throw it in TGE and look at the spawns that way. I have the feeling that a lot of the scrum maps have the team spawn points all over the place.

Of course I am going to suggest serving in linux. Let me know if you need anything. I am dying to see what my ping is to your server. :)

I agree with niko and ^, a CTF mod would be sweet. It would be much better than the old CTF server because of your connection, and we all miss good CTF games... ;)

Actually the ptt server (when it was up) had a way better connection than mine but the processor(s) couldnt handle the forum and the games. 56k hosts ctf (sometimes) from his home computer. Thats all we have since its all closed source. Im not interested in modding anyway. Ill do some scripting but I steer clear of any graphic work.
