Ok then,
BY FAR the best SciFi series on TV is the NEW Battlestar Gallactica. As a matter of fact, it rivals just about any drama on TV. If you are a fan of either Drama or Science Fiction, you owe it to yourself to check it out. It airs on Friday at 10PM EST on the SciFi channel. This is an surprisingly good show. Character-driven, good to great acting, fantastic special effects and an incredibly deep and layered storyline.

Although there is a good amount of fun space action, this is really just a drama that is set in space, as such, it might not appeal to kids so much.

This show sunk it's hooks in me like no show has in a long long time.

Sadly, Comcast requires a premium for me to get the SciFi channel. :( I should've purchased DirecTV instead. I saw a tape of the premiere. Pretty sweet!

We watched some of the premier on NBC a week or so ago and we both liked it. Unfortunately we don't have expanded cable and the money that would go toward it will probably go toward a cable Internet access instead (gotta play TBML ya know).

Still, I have my original BG DVD to enjoy.

BTW, some skins are already in the works.

My iChat icon has been a Cylon since the Sci Fi 2 part premiere last summer.

I no longer have sci fi and I'm bummed that I'm missing it.

Sniper.... I ranted for a long time about BG after seeing the 2 part series last summer. There is something very different and special about this show. Partially the way they "film" the outer space scenes (they use Japanese action movie camera moves) , partially the music they play (kind of strangely ethnic and sparse) and partially in the scope of the show. They are bringing things to Science Fiction that I have never seen in a movie or TV before. In particular, I remember the scenes from the home planet, when the Cylons were dropping nukes. There was something startling about the broad vistas where you could see multiple mushroom clouds... Really chilling.

Oh god I sound like such a geek....

I like BattleStar Galactica (original series) because it WAS just like the Japanimation, but life-like. Anyone remember Robotech or Macross? Quite similar, aren't they?
<sigh>, well maybe they'll release each season on DVD.

Riiiiiiiiiight, I'm sure the fascination has NOTHING to do with reason Number Six: A Heaping Helping of Helfer ... ;)

Wellll, the scene where #6 (the incredibly attractive woman) kills another womans baby (just to experience it) was a pretty good indicator that she is a bit mean eh?

@Ice,
I am a fan of both Stargate and Stargate Atlantis (and I TIVO them both). They too are different from other shows of this genre.... But not anywhere near as good and unique as Gallactica. Stargate takes the audiences intelligence for granted just a bit more than I care for. They have some good Science Fiction elements to the story and the "history" of the Ancients, but you have to swallow the whole pill to not laugh at the absurdity of some of the small things that they try to pass by you. Overall though, both SG1 and Atlantis are a fun SciFi romp.

@James
so you are not getting to watch the new Gallactica? If not, too bad. I am sure you would like it a lot. Very intelligent Science Fiction and very good drama.

Gallactica is definitely on the Tivo schedule along with the two Stargate series. It is off to a great start (IMO). It is more about the story than the special effects. I haven't seen a single laser type weapon on either side. Both use projectile weapons & missles. When Galactica starts firing it's guns, it reminds me of WW II footage of Navy ships shooting at enemy aircraft - tracers work real well in the blackness of space.

Now that I think about it, I don't recall any scenes that just jump out as being computer generated. The space scenes should but they are shot so differently from most American movies/shows. Like TG mentioned, I've seen this style in some old Japanese sci-fi films but the quality is way beyond those old movies. I just get caught up in the scene and don't even think about it being a special effect.

Great show that is worth watching if you get the chance.

Erk - didn't know about that baby thing (I've only seen the last - I think - couple of episodes). Agreed on creepy.

The whole #6-remnant-in-your-head thing is very Scorpius-Crichton from Farscape, but that was my favorite show out of anything in the last 10 years.

I'm sure I might approve more if I were watching the series, but I just didn't get into the "human" Cylons too much. For me, it was just an opportunity to introduce some hot chick villian while replacing my silver Centurians with booty.

Rabby, you are missing the conundrum.

Remember the Sci-Fi horror movie "The Thing"?. I saw the version made by John Carpenter a while back and that movie scared the hell out of me, I watched the last 1/4 completely covered by my comforter with only my eyes exposed. The fact that the people around you might be infected with some kind of "monster" and none of you know it (even the person that is infected) is terrifying.

In BG, you DO get the hot chick Cylon, along with the good old fashioned Cylon Robots, but you also get the humans who are "infected" and don't know it. As such, you get the whole paranoid society element... This one fact alone will add so much to the DRAMA. I love the humanoid element. (And the hot chick is a good thing too :)

Cool Bolo... I really think (and hope) you like it. If you like good SciFi, and you like good Drama... You should love this. It would sure help to understand the story-line before you watch the next episode. The story is a bit complicated and you will appreciate the show all the more if you know the story.

Enjoy
