The wife and I just finished watching All the President's Men last night. We discovered that we really didn't know what Watergate was all about and that it reached far beyond the hotel break in we hear so much about, basically a spy network within our federal agencies used for political advantage.

Somehow, history seems to be repeating.

So I actually find myself hoping the Democrats gain some seats this Fall. I was hoping that things would really turn around with a Republican controlled government, since I thought this was our chance to really show our stuff. Overall, I've been disappointed. And although it has been said the two parties are basically the same, at least they dislike each other enough to bring some sort of balance to the equation. Apparently GW knows this since I recently read that the White House lawyers were preparing for possible Democrat lead investigations after the November elections, which I think is a good thing. If Bush is on the up and up, there's nothing to worry about. Otherwise, things need to be discovered and corrected.

Which reminds me, how's that third party coming, Hugo?

Sorry rabban, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title.

As for who takes the seat, I don't care if they are ass nor elephant. I just want some people who know what they are doing and do it in a way that benefits america. Simple.

Pardon my rudeness, I cannot abide useless people.

There's a saying I like Rabby, "You brought it home, you name it."

I have to admit I enter this thread with caution. I wonder if you are setting up something.

Bad Flea. Hmm..., perhaps your mind is clearing from neocon Orwellian use of language. (I borrowed that.)

He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.

Bush promised not to touch the Social Security surplus and then committed over $1 trillion of it to other purposes; he promised to go to war in Iraq only as a last resort and reneged on that promise, halting weapons inspections before they were completed; he inherited an economy with a surplus, promised fiscal discipline, and then ran up the highest budget deficits in history; he opposed creating a Department of Homeland Security, then supported it and took credit for it; he opposed creation of a 9/11 Commission and then supported it; he opposed a time extension for the 9/11 Commission and then supported it; he said gay marriage was a state issue and then proposed a constitutional amendment banning it. The list goes on and on.

If you are truly interested in a primer, I humbly suggest starting here . It's not long.

{Republican pollster and consultant} Frank Luntz’s organization puts out a handbook each year about 600 pages long, on how to argue each issue, what words to use, what words not to use, how the other side argues, sample speeches, and so on. Then they have a system for training people who are in their think tanks, people who are running for office, officeholders, judges, and so on, in how to use conservative language and how to use these argument forms. That also includes reporters. So they have a large training apparatus that the Democrats don’t have.

Come back with something interesting and I'll be happy to join in again.

Flea, where's the love? Where's the trust? Just so you know, I always try to enter into these discussions honestly, so I mean it when I say I hope the Dems do win some seats and bring some balance of power to our government. I think GW has been a bit bold on some issues and perhaps some of those issues need to be looked into and I say "so much the better". If there is wrong doing, then it needs to be found out, stopped, and punished.

Aye. Best governments up here are pendulum: 2 mandates, then exit. It's been like that in Quebec since the 70s. After 7-9 years the people just about always vote for the other party, and no matter what. At the federal levels we had the Liberals that hung in for 3+ mandates - it ended in a series of corruption trial (Sponsorship Scandal) that made the Government fall less than a year ago.

Now we have a minority government with 4 parties drawn along regional lines. Very interesting; the main party (Conservatives) government is mini-republican, but held in check by the 3 other parties. However to defeat some crucial government bills means another election, etc. Which people are weary of (elections means advertising, rhetoric, debates and going to vote in summer - waaa)

I don't know what you guys will do though. Washington is turning more and more into a secluded unaccountable multi-millionaire elite with huge hype machine and corporate agendas. More interested in their privilege than principles (Al Gore had no balls re. Challenging the election). Plus your government is united, i.e. You don't have regional pressure of states threatening to pull out of the confederation because they disagree with federal policies, etc. Perhaps we'll see that this century, perhaps not; it's a huge taboo in the US. 'United we Stand' even though we don't agree. But then again, regional pressures are good.

Here in Canada we have Alberta that is Right Wing and Quebec that is Left Wing, and both have movements to secede form the Federation; so does Newfoundland.

If you guys have 1-2 more Rebublican mandates, you're screwed. As in, 9/11 will be a footnote. Condi in Lebanon was a joke, and you're not taken seriously anymore. The next administration will be crucial in rebuilding bridges. Good luck!

The other day I was commenting to the Mrs. That Bill Clinton could SO win the presidental election right now. Is it time to repeal the 22nd Amendment? XD
