I put this thread here on General forums, since it doesn't have anything directly with TT to do and I didn't want to bloat the Modding forum with this. Note also, that I'm not actively trying to distract peoples minds from ThinkTanks over to other games (although I realize I may risk doing just that, lol... Then sorry). It's more of a reply to a question (Napalm's) being brought up in another thread.

Anyways. There is a game that I've been kind of (well, truth has it, VERY) sucked up in, called Return To Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (called just Enemy Territory, or in short, ET). It's an online FPS (first person shooter) game that is wicked obsessive, at least to me. Enemy Territory has been around since 2003 (same as TT) and it's just so guuud... :D

Maybe a little off topic, but ET is a GREAT game. I can confirm that. The rare thing is, that it's totally free. If there's any game I've played since I lost my TT apetite, it has to be ET. If you want to mod for ET, first I have to say, albeit probably even cooler than modding for TT, it's way more advanced than modding for TT, really. I've made some attempts, but never really got the hang of it. For a long time, there have been a modding tool for the Pc side of things, called GTKRadiant. Earlier, Mac users had to recompile GTKRadiant via XCode in Mac and it was a real hassle to use it. Now, there is a ported version, called MacRadiant, which is installed just like a normal app (by double-clicking the installer icon). Here is the link to MacRadiant and a great forum for Mac Map modding in general. Be aware, that with MacRadiant or GtkRadiant you can make maps for so many more games than only ET. Most games that utilizes the Quake III game engine can be modded within the MacRadiant! Meaning, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Doom 3, Quake III and whatever they are called (I forgot all the titles). Although, keep in mind that mapping for Enemy Territory will, at some point, involve minor bits of scripting, since, in ET for instance, you must define what the objectives are and at least some general stuff. But that does NOT mean that it has to be overly complicated either, I'm just not a scripter/programmer myself, so I really have no idea. But probably you can simply copy/paste some bits from other people's code, just to get the standard stuff in and then focus on the map making instead.

But sure, we could maybe teach each others about this MacRadiant tool. I've been really tempted to dig in to it, but never had the courage, I guess. :)

Thanks for the info. I looking bryond TT. I keep seeing all these other games that graphically and form a modding perspective just blow TT away. I don't see any attempt to to bring TT current and if you just get right down to it, It hasn't happend and I'm no longer waiting for it. Even if constructor is released, (which looks promising), I'm sure there will be limitations as far as what can be borught into the TT game using TGE. In the very near future I will be looking to move to anothe rgame and get involved like I did here, or just do something else with my time.

Thanks for the info Wiz.

I tried ET once , didnt exactly like it. My guess is that some people are addicted to certain kinds of games. Though I'm not exactly sure why I'm addicted to ThinkTanks. Maybe because "we" can change the game so much in almost any way we want..Or maybe the community...? *cough*...Or not. %)

Only lethal on days that end with "Y"

Because it sucks. Buy a game, get Half life 2 and counter-strike source!

@ Rooster.

Yep, ET (Enemy Territory) is available for all major platforms; Mac, Linux and PC. The game has been around since 2003 and I believe the company that made it, Splash Damage (www.splashdamage.com), released Enemy Territory for free as they might have realized the game couldn't match the latest super fanciness (and processor intensitivity) of today's first-person (in short: fps) games.

I've been hooked to ET for more than a year now and in my opinion, it's got the perfect combination of running comparatively smooth even on shabby machines, plus it's got that undefinable kind of 'charm' that surrounds a good game with a winning magic. Doesn't matter if it doesn't look ultra-sophisticated and if it isn't based on tomorrow's rocket-science game engine, to me. If it's fun, it's... Fun! ;)

Another (very) good feature of ET, which keeps me playing it over and over again, is that it is 100% team oriented. As such - like in all similar online games - you sometimes find yourself playing in a team full of counterproductive people who kills their own team members and such. But the good part is, in ET you have this voting system, so if you want, just throw a vote to kick the bad doers and the majority of votes decides what's going to happen. It's also easy to just hit a button and you can watch everyone's statistics, such as teamkills, normal kills, etc. To be sure if a kicking vote is reasonable or not.

Enemy Territory is mostly based on accomplishing various objectives on each map. Basically, the Axis' use to be the defendants of a certain place, and the Allies are the attackers, who needs to blow up walls with dynamite to get entrance to some inner part of the map, they need to repair vehicles and escort them along some path to places where they pick up an objective and once again deliver it to somewhere else. There are SO many maps for ET... :P Some fit better for games with just a few players, like 2-on-2 and some maps are made for whole-scale, fullblown WAR!!! It's a killer game, especially for being free. Forget the expensive commercial games. They don't add anything new, but rather bog down your computer with unneccesary graphics, when all you (at least me) really want to do, is to get some quick fix of action, like hit n' run (very similar to ThinkTanks in that aspect).

Speaking of ThinkTanks. What drew me away from it somewhat, was the fact that I began to realize that you don't have -that- many options as to how you will attack. I mean, it's basically, shall I hide here behind this rock or not? No? Ok, then I'll attack. Now what? Oh, I got it, I press the W button and my tank goes... Yep. Straight forward... Towards the enemy. But what if I want to do something a -little- bit different, then...? Well, you can always wobble left and right some, by using the A and D buttons, to have your tank flanking the enemy... :) But, in reality, the difference ain't that big.

In Enemy Territory, you also have these W, A, S, D buttons to maneuver your player. But you also crouch, you prone, and you've got to know how to jump. And what you aim at, could be anything from someone standing straight in front of you, to someone standing right under or over you. Well, it's hard to describe, but I see many more options - and I mean good options - as to variate your whole playin style. But the good part (and last one) with Enemy Territory is also, that in difference to some other similar fps games, such as Ghost Recon and others, you don't have all these 100+ buttons to keep in mind. You have only but a few, but the choices you have for how you want to play are VAST.

;)

Try it folks. It is a hard rocking game for sure.

Yah. Been playing this for a few months and I am hooked.

I play at Whosgaming 1 and Whosgaming 2 most of the time under the name PatrolPenguin #445 (I'm not very creative with names)

You can connect to the first server with: "/connect whosgaming.com"

You can connect to the second server with: "/connect who2.whosgaming.com"
